Chapter 25 Small in stature but big in courage
Mao Mao followed Mao Mao into Old Madam Lou's room.
The Lou family's house is a European-style mansion, but the old lady's room is decorated in an antique style.
The set of rosewood furniture is classic and precious. Famous ink paintings and calligraphy are hung on the wall, blue and white porcelain vases are displayed on the antique shelf, and a statue of Guanyin is placed against the wall.
Everything seemed strange to Mao Mao, and her head turned around curiously.
The big white cat jumped onto a chair, scratched the cushion, lay down, and turned back to her, meowing.
Upon hearing her good friend's invitation, Mao Mao quickly climbed onto the chair and sat down next to it, not forgetting to say thank you: "Thank you, kitty."
Meow~
Old Madam Lou: "..."
Grandma Lou sat down opposite them, silently watching as a little baby squeezed into her cat's usual spot.
Her cat was very domineering and never let anyone sit in its spot, but now that the little girl had sat on its long fur, it wasn't angry at all.
Why did her cat betray her first?
Old Madam Lou felt very uncomfortable.
She cleared her throat and asked, "Want some snacks?"
Mao Mao's eyes lit up: "I want to eat!"
Old Madam Lou went and brought her some snacks.
She's old and her teeth aren't very good, so she only eats soft pastries. Haicheng has several century-old brands that make the most authentic pastries.
Fortunately, Mao Mao is young and has only a few baby teeth, so her teeth aren't very good.
She picked up a piece of mung bean cake from the plate, and just as she was about to put it in her mouth, she remembered her mother's words.
My mother said that we should be polite and respectful to the old lady.
Mao Mao raised her little hand and obediently said, "Grandma eats first."
Meow~
Old Madam Lou gave her a stern look.
Seeing her soft little face, even softer than the pastries in her hands, and her big, bright eyes staring at her without blinking, her eyes full of innocence and clarity.
The old lady pursed her lips: "You eat it yourself, I don't need it."
"Thank you, Grandma," Mao Mao said obediently.
She hugged a mung bean cake and munched on it, her round cheeks twitching like a little hamster. Her little tuft of hair swayed happily as she ate the delicious treat.
For some reason, watching her eat, Old Madam Lou suddenly felt a surge of appetite.
At her age, she no longer craves good food, and her digestion is not very good, so she usually eats very little at each meal.
Old Madam Lou picked up a piece of osmanthus cake, took a bite, and let it melt in her mouth.
"How long have you been living at the Lou family's house?"
"Me?" Mao Mao counted on her fingers: "One day, two days..."
Most of the time, after a few days, her little brain would forget everything and she would be stuck counting.
Mao Mao paused for a moment, then nodded with certainty and said, "It's been a long time!"
Old Madam Lou: "..."
Madam Lou: "I heard from Ah Hong that he was almost scammed. Did you remind him?"
"hold head high?"
What did you do?
Mao Mao looked blank: "I don't know."
Mao Mao didn't know why her third brother came to thank her with big bags and small packages when she hadn't done anything.
"You also saved my son's life?"
"Mao Mao doesn't know."
Old Madam Lou: "..."
She stared at the little girl's bewildered round face and thought to herself: That's right, what can such a young child do?
What lucky star? Good fortune? That's just nonsense from Lou Dashuai and his ilk.
She's just a three-year-old child; she came anyway, it's not like she objected. Was it really necessary to lie to her like this?
Mao Mao slowly finished her snack. She reached out to pet the cat again, and the big white cat affectionately licked the crumbs off her fingers. The barbs on the cat's body licked her soft fingers, making Mao Mao shrink back from the ticklish sensation.
Old Madam Lou's face immediately darkened, and she said, "Stop!"
Mao Mao was startled.
Old Madam Lou said sternly again, "Come here."
Mao Mao stood up, and the big white cat next to her also stood up and jumped to the ground with her.
She walked over to Old Madam Lou and saw her grandmother take a handkerchief out of her pocket. It was embroidered with flowers and had a faint fragrance.
The old lady wiped her little hands clean with a handkerchief, then wiped the crumbs from her mouth, and said with a displeased look, "Didn't your mother teach you to be hygienic? People from the countryside just don't care about hygiene."
Mao Mao obediently thanked her, "Thank you, Grandma."
Old Madam Lou folded her handkerchief and said impatiently, "Go away, don't get in my way."
Mao Mao wouldn't leave, clinging to the big white cat at her feet: "Grandma, can I play with the cat?"
"If it agrees."
Meow~
Old Madam Lou: "...Go ahead."
Goodbye, Grandma.
Mao Mao said goodbye to her grandma, and the big white cat followed behind her with its tail held high. The two of them ran out of the house.
While sitting in her room, Old Madam Lou could still hear the baby's voice coming from outside.
"Kitty, can you come downstairs?"
Meow~
"Kitty, shall I hold you?"
Meow~
"Kitty... Ouch!"
"Meow!!!"
Old Madam Lou suddenly stood up.
The little girl's guilty voice came through again: "I'm sorry, kitty, I didn't mean to step on your tail. Let me blow on it for you, okay?"
Meow~
The person and the cat happily went downstairs, and their voices gradually faded away.
Old Madam Lou slowly sat back down.
With a stern, aged face, she thought to herself: Her cat has a name!
...
Mao Mao generously offered up her toys to play with the cat.
A few sparkling glass beads shimmered in the sunlight. When dropped on the ground, they bounced away, with a person and a cat chasing after them.
The Lou family's hall was very large and spacious, enough to host a banquet, and the man and his cat were having a great time.
The third concubine glanced over from the direction of the small living room, then pulled her head back, wondering, "The old lady usually treats the cat like a treasure, and that cat is usually not friendly with anyone, so how come it plays with her so well?"
"She's small but bold; she actually dared to go and talk to the old lady."
"But why did the old lady suddenly come back this time?" The concubines whispered among themselves: "The last time the old lady came back was when the fourth young master was injured."
"This time, it was also because the Third Young Master was tricked that he came here."
Xia Xiaoxiang listened intently, her ears perked up. Yesterday, she had already heard quite a bit about Old Madam Lou.
Haicheng is a big city, deeply influenced by Western culture and ideas. Old Madam Lou dislikes Haicheng and usually lives alone in her hometown, communicating only by letter. She rarely comes over unless there is something important.
The fact that the Third Young Master was scammed sounds like a big deal, but in the end he didn't suffer any losses; it was just a false alarm.
Why would the old lady go to such lengths?
“The old lady is not young,” the first wife said. “She usually lives alone in her hometown, which is far away and inconvenient. She was also sick at the beginning of the year, which the commander-in-chief and I only found out about later.”
The concubines exchanged glances.
The third concubine turned pale with fright at her words: "Madam, do you mean that the old lady is going to move here?"
