Chapter 48 Your brother is the worst kind of person
"She's being completely unreasonable!"
In a corner of the banquet, Lou Hongjian grabbed a wine bottle from the table, poured himself a glass of red wine, and drank it down in one gulp.
He unbuttoned his shirt collar up to his neck and complained to his younger siblings, "When we were in France, she always seemed to have a problem with me. I don't even know where I offended her. We didn't even go to the same school, we weren't classmates!"
Lou Yansui took a small piece of cake from the table and fed it to Mao Mao in small bites with a fork, casually saying, "Third Brother, with your personality, I thought she was your love debt."
"she?!"
Lou Hongjian quickly poured himself another glass of wine to calm his nerves.
As Mao Mao ate her cake, her round, chubby cheeks twitched, while her big, dark eyes were wide open and her little ears were perked up as she listened to her brothers talk.
"Although I've had a few girlfriends, I can tell the difference between what kind of person can be a girlfriend and what kind of person can only be a friend." Lou Hongjian pouted and said, "Her father is the president of the Haicheng Chamber of Commerce. If I date her, I can't break up easily... Ah Sui, why are you covering Mao Mao's ears?"
Lou Yansui lowered her head and asked Mao Mao with concern, "Did you hear what I just said?"
Mao Mao obediently shook her head: "No."
Lou Yansui breathed a sigh of relief: "That's great, your ears almost got dirty."
Mao Mao listened, seemingly understanding but not quite: "Oh."
Lou Hongjian was almost furious: "Ah Sui!"
He poured himself another glass of wine, but this time he didn't drink it; he just held it in his hand.
"And do you know what? Today is Zhang Jingshu's blind date banquet! No wonder, for a birthday party, Dad didn't come, but Mom wanted all four of us to come."
Lou Hongjian looked towards the hall.
Lou Fengju and Lou Heming had been taken away by the First Madam to attend a social event, and at that moment, they were talking to Chairman Zhang. They were too far away to hear what they were saying, but it sent a chill down Lou Hongjian's spine.
"The thought that woman might become my sister-in-law makes me feel terrible." He muttered to himself, "My eldest and second brothers shouldn't have such bad taste..."
“Miss Zhang is beautiful and capable; she’s not as bad as you say,” Lou Yansui said.
Lou Hongjian looked on in disbelief: "Didn't you see how she treated me? She didn't even give me a smile, so rude!"
"There's no need to be polite to someone like you." The voice came from behind.
Lou Hongjian turned around and saw that Zhang Jingshu, whom he had just mentioned, had appeared behind him at some point, looking at him with a cold smile.
Lou Hongjian was startled and quickly took a few steps back to increase the distance between them.
"What do you want?" he asked warily. "What do you need me for?"
Zhang Jingshu rolled her eyes at him: "I'm not here to see you, I'm here to see Mao Mao."
"Sister?" Mao Mao peeked out from behind her brother.
Upon seeing her, Zhang Jingshu's face immediately lit up with a smile: "Little Mao Mao, why are you hiding here instead of going outside to play?"
“I’ll go with my brother,” Mao Mao said obediently.
"Sister, this is my fourth brother." After introducing Lou Yansui, Mao Mao introduced Lou Hongjian to her: "This is my third brother, he can paint!"
Zhang Jingshu: "Xiao Mao Mao, do you remember what I told you before?"
Mao Mao nodded and repeated, "My sister said that, apart from my brother, no one who can draw is a good person."
Lou Hongjian: "..."
Mao Mao innocently asked again, "What are good things?"
"I misspoke," Zhang Jingshu said with a smile. "Including your brother, anyone who can draw is a bad person. Your brother is the worst of them all."
"Hey!" Lou Hongjian said, greatly displeased. "Zhang Jingshu, I could tolerate your rudeness before. But how could you speak ill of me in front of my sister?"
Lou Yansui interjected curiously, "Miss Zhang, I'm curious, where did my third brother offend you in the past?"
Lou Hongjian: "I have never offended her. She is a madwoman who keeps causing me trouble!"
Zhang Jingshu's face showed disbelief, then her expression turned into deep sarcasm: "Lou Hongjian, have you forgotten Julia?"
"Julia?"
The name sounded somewhat familiar. Lou Hongjian racked his brains before finally recalling it from his memory. It seemed to be…
"She was my roommate and my good friend," Zhang Jingshu said with a sneer. "She dated you for a few months, but you played with her feelings and dumped her without a second thought. You broke her heart, yet you've even forgotten her name?"
Lou Hongjian: "I...I do have such an ex-girlfriend."
Zhang Jingshu let out a cold snort.
Lou Hongjian was furious and embarrassed: "What do you mean by playing with feelings? Every word I said when I was dating her came from the bottom of my heart. We parted amicably, and she agreed when I said I wanted to break up."
Zhang Jingshu said angrily, "She didn't agree at all, but you insisted on breaking up with her. After you broke up with her, you quickly got a new girlfriend, while she cried for months because of you."
"Am I supposed to be responsible for a former girlfriend for the rest of my life? That's just unreasonable. Besides, I've never cheated on her."
"Does not having an affair mean everything is alright?"
"What else?"
"Tch. Young Master Lou, your attitude towards relationships is too casual. I really look down on you."
"You've been giving me trouble just because of something like this?!"
"You have no ability of your own, you only rely on your parents, and you even play with girls' true feelings. Do I have to list all your shortcomings again?"
"Miss Zhang, you are simply..."
When Zhang Jingshu mentioned the name "Julia," Lou Yansui covered Mao Mao's ears again.
Hearing this, he couldn't help but remind her, "Mao Mao is still here."
Mao Mao couldn't hear anything. She looked up at the two arguing, her round eyes filled with confusion.
The two of them lowered their heads and looked at Mao Mao, then exchanged a glance, snorted coldly, and turned their heads away.
Zhang Jingshu reached out her hand to Mao Mao: "Come on, Mao Mao, I'll take you to play."
Lou Hongjian pushed her hand away, took his sister's hand himself, and said with a forced smile, "No need to trouble Miss Zhang, Mao Mao is my sister, I can take her to play."
"Today is my birthday banquet, and I should do my best to be a good host."
“Miss Zhang is busy with important matters, so we won’t trouble you. We can do as we please.”
Mao Mao looked at her older brother on the left, then at her older sister on the right, her little head turning back and forth, completely bewildered.
Who should she hang out with?
Lou Yansui covered her forehead, leaned against the armrest of her wheelchair, and couldn't help but sigh.
Why are you arguing again?
Just then, the Western orchestra playing in a corner of the ball changed its tune, and a melodious dance music echoed in the hall.
Lou Yansui led his younger sister over himself, wiped the cream off her lips with a handkerchief, and reminded her, "Maomao, didn't you want to dance?"
"Yes!"
Mao Mao's whole face lit up: "Brother, dance!"
Lou Hongjian raised his eyebrows slightly, as if he had won a battle and was now in high spirits. He made an inviting gesture to his sister like a peacock spreading its tail feathers: "Mao Mao, may I have the honor of inviting you to dance?"
Mao Mao pursed her lips, two sweet dimples appearing on her round little face as she smiled. She grabbed the hem of her skirt, gave an awkward bow, and placed her chubby little hand in her brother's palm.
"Sure," Mao Mao said sweetly. "Mao Mao likes to dance with her brother."
Lou Hongjian gave Zhang Jingshu a smug look, then led his sister to the open space in the hall.
As the music changed, young men and women began dancing on the dance floor in the lobby.
The crystal chandelier overhead cast a dazzling light upon them, and the ladies' exquisite jewelry reflected its brilliance.
The dance floor is filled with the scents of lingerie and hairpins, the interplay of lights and shadows, and the intoxicating aromas of perfume and wine.
Just as she was about to step onto the dance floor, Mao Mao suddenly stopped and stood still.
Feeling the little dumpling beside him suddenly stop, Lou Hongjian also stopped, looking down in confusion: "Mao Mao, what's wrong?"
Mao Mao looked timidly at the dance floor in front of her. The dance floor was filled with people, but her face showed obvious fear. She took two steps back in fear.
She not only stepped back herself, but also grabbed her brother's hand with her little hand, and tried hard to pull him back as well. Her little face turned red as she said, "Brother, no more, Mao Mao won't jump anymore."
