Chapter 292 Summer Vacation is Over
At night, Mao Mao naturally sleeps with her mother.
Sophie also slept with Miss Bailey.
The two little girls were very close; they even slept hand in hand, sharing the same blanket. Naturally, Xia Xiaoxiang and Miss Bailey would also sleep in the same tent.
Fortunately, none of them were as tall as Lou Dashuai or Mr. Langdon, so the four of them sleeping together wasn't too crowded, and there was still room to turn over.
Xia Xiaoxiang enthusiastically helped make up the bed: "Teacher Bailey, come here."
Miss Bailey's lips tightened as she stared at the empty spot. Mao Mao and Sophie had already lain down, the two little girls looking at her with wide, expectant eyes.
Sophie called out softly, "Miss Bailey..."
Mao Mao said longingly, "Auntie Bailey, come here."
Miss Bailey: "..."
She looked around and saw that there were no extra tents, and sleeping in the open was out of the question. Although it was summer, it was still a bit chilly on the mountain at midnight.
Miss Bailey hesitated for a long time before finally bowing her head and crawling into the tent.
Even at Langdon's house, she didn't have much experience sleeping with Sophie.
The tent was only so big; after four people lay down, there wasn't much room left. Even though Miss Bailey was lying straight, she could still feel a warm little body next to her, with a constant stream of heat coming from it.
Sleep with Sophie.
She was also lying in the same tent as another mother and daughter.
Before this, Miss Bailey would never have dared to even think about it.
Mao Mao and Sophie wriggled around in the blankets, tickling each other and stepping on each other's little feet. In their play, they inevitably bumped into Xia Xiaoxiang and Miss Bailey next to them.
Xia Xiaoxiang held her daughter down: "Alright, stop playing, stop kicking off the blankets, or a ghost will come and eat your toes."
"Oh." Mao Mao obediently pulled her little feet back.
Sophie followed suit and pulled her legs in.
"I'm sorry," Sophie said obediently, "Miss Bailey, I accidentally kicked you just now."
Miss Bailey: "It's alright."
Sophie: "Would you hate sleeping with me, Miss Bailey?"
"Of course not."
"Then why are you not moving at all? Your body is as stiff as a stone."
"..."
Let's look at Mao Mao over there.
She snuggled restlessly into her mother's arms, wanting her to hold her while she slept. Xia Xiaoxiang naturally opened her arms and hugged her tightly. The two of them rubbed against each other affectionately, and several kisses from her mother landed on Mao Mao's soft little face. The tent was filled with her cheerful laughter.
Miss Bailey let out a soft breath.
She relaxed and reached out to gently pull Sophie into her arms.
“Because I don’t know how to love you in a way that would be the right answer.” She kissed Sophie’s cheek: “You’ve always been the best, my treasure.”
Sophie smiled broadly.
The still-burning orange-red campfire outside the tent illuminated her soft, pale golden curls, making them appear as sweet as honey.
“I love you too, Miss Bailey.”
Meow~
"Woof woof!"
Two fluffy heads squeezed into the tent entrance.
The big white cat slipped in, its movements nimble and light. It skillfully jumped onto Mao Mao's blanket, curled itself up, and lay down comfortably.
The golden retriever wagged its tail, trying to squeeze in, but it was too big. Before it could even make a move, Miss Bailey glared at it sternly. Everyone in the Langdon family was under Miss Bailey's control, and the dogs were no exception.
The golden retriever let out a pitiful whimper from deep in its throat, then withdrew its head and curled up in a ball at the tent entrance.
Lou Yansui came over with a newly written draft and told the two little girls a bedtime story.
"Mao Mao, are you asleep?" he asked softly.
A loud reply immediately came from inside the tent: "Brother!"
Lou Yansui asked, "Would you like to hear Mao Mao's new story?"
"Yes, yes!"
Lou Yansui chuckled softly, sat down cross-legged outside the tent, glanced at the large golden retriever beside him, and reached out to pick it up and hug it. The golden retriever obediently rested its head on his arm.
The campfire cast his shadow onto the tent.
Mao Mao happily introduced to her friend, "Sophie, Mao Mao's story was written by my brother, it's so good!"
Sophie nodded vigorously, her face full of anticipation: "Yes!"
Even Miss Bailey perked up her ears to listen.
Because Mao Mao is her brother's most loyal little reader, she praises Mao Mao's stories to everyone she meets, whetting everyone's appetite. But newspapers from Haicheng don't sell here, and bookstores don't carry Mao Mao's storybooks.
Lou Yansui read softly, "Maomao made a new friend..."
He was a little boy who lived in a Western-style house, owned a big dog, and had hair as bright as the sun.
One afternoon, Maomao and his cat wandered into the neighborhood. Through a white fence, the two children met. The new friend treated him to cake and juice, and told him about his little troubles…
The cave was quiet. Lou Fengju and Lou Hongjian moved quietly so as not to disturb him as he read the story.
The night breeze was gentle, blowing up the ashes from the campfire and letting them fall onto the snow-white manuscript paper.
With his gentle voice, a new story was quickly finished.
Lou Yansui neatly folded the manuscript paper and softly called out, "Mao Mao?"
There was no response from Mao Mao inside the tent; only Xia Xiaoxiang whispered, "Mao Mao is asleep."
Lou Yansui then fell silent.
He returned to his tent, where Lou Hongjian, with his arm as a pillow, casually occupied most of the space. Only when Lou Yansui entered did he retract his feet.
"Sigh," Lou Hongjian said softly, "I wish it were Mao Mao who I'm sleeping with tonight."
Lou Yansui lay down next to him and covered herself with her own blanket: "Third Brother, I don't want to sleep with you either."
"Hey, hey, no?" Lou Hongjian was displeased upon hearing this: "Ah Sui, are you saying that you're looking down on me?"
Lou Yansui replied calmly, "Yes."
"You still look down on me?!"
Lou Hongjian immediately pounced on him, pinned him to the ground, and vigorously ruffled his hair: "A-Sui, you disrespect your brother, see how I punish you!"
"Stop, stop rubbing my head—Third Brother, stop—"
Lou Yansui struggled to her feet.
The two brothers started fighting inside the small tent, making a lot of noise.
Lou Fengju's voice drifted over from the next tent: "Stop making noise, or you'll wake Mao Mao. Or, who will sleep with me?"
"..."
The two brothers immediately fell silent, shut their mouths, and obediently lay back down in their blankets.
...
The second time, I stayed in a cave, saw fireflies, heard stories, and even had a good night's sleep.
The two little girls walked down the mountain hand in hand, both still reluctant to leave.
If their parents hadn't objected, they would have loved to settle down on this mountain.
However, with Miss Bailey's approval, Sophie will still have to attend classes for the rest of the summer vacation, but the class time will be much shorter than before, giving her plenty of time to play with Mao Mao every day.
The two of them walked on every brick on the ground and visited every shop. Mao Mao even went to church with Sophie. While the pastors were praying, Mao Mao tilted her little head and fell fast asleep against Mr. Langdon, which startled Sophie.
Happy times are fleeting, like a rabbit's tail skimming across a field.
Before they could even react, their summer vacation was over.
