Song Mengmeng's question came out of nowhere, but it was very timely.
With snow falling heavily outside, when discussing fantasy topics, the most likely thing that comes to mind is a snow woman, a yokai born in the snow.
However, the Snow Woman is more famous in the land of cherry blossoms.
Even the experienced driver, Lei, knew these kinds of stories, so he laughed and joked, "Snow Woman?! Isn't that a monster from Japan? I'm a truck driver from China. Even if I have a lot of yin energy, I probably wouldn't have the chance to see a monster like that!"
Before Song Mengmeng could reply, there was a commotion from the couple next to him.
The man angrily raised his hand and slapped the woman across the face, scolding her angrily, "What are you spacing out for? You're burning me, you know that?!"
The woman lowered her head, meekly daring not to voice any objection.
She carefully wiped the soup off the man's hands, repeatedly apologizing. Her humble and submissive demeanor left those who wanted to help her speechless.
After all, no matter how outrageous the man's actions were, this was ultimately a private family matter between the couple. It was a matter of mutual consent, and intervening rashly now would not only fail to bring any good, but might also lead to complaints.
Why bother!
"That's not necessarily true. With transportation so advanced these days, even monsters can come and visit!" Hu Da smiled, continuing the conversation along with Lei Zi's words while successfully covering up the awkwardness caused by the couple's interruption.
Lei Zi readily agreed and laughed along with Hu Da, instantly easing the tension.
"But the older generation says that going out in snowy weather can really lead to strange occurrences." Liu chimed in, recounting an old story he had heard from other colleagues.
"It was said that during a foggy day, someone was passing through a village and thought that it would be difficult to travel in the fog, so he decided to borrow a place to rest at a villager's house by the roadside and continue on his way after the fog cleared."
He finally managed to knock on the door of a fellow villager, but the villager refused to let him in.
He said his house was too small to accommodate such an outsider!
Finally, after pleading for most of the day, the villager softened his tone and agreed to let him rest under the eaves for a while.
The man was extremely tired and felt that it would be good to have a place to rest his feet!
When he woke up from his nap, the fog had lifted, but there were no villages or houses around; instead, there was a graveyard. And there he was, sitting against a tombstone!
The man was terrified, but remembering that the fellow villager had taken him in for half a day, he went to a nearby town, bought some paper money and other offerings, and delivered the lodging fee to the villager.
These kinds of stories have been circulating among long-distance bus drivers for a long time.
Once you start talking, you can't stop telling stories.
Thanks to Song Mengmeng and the others' occasional interjections and cooperation, the conversation in the room was quite harmonious and lively. Even the sleazy middle-aged man who had previously been unwilling to join in started to chime in.
Just as the man was about to continue speaking, the tightly closed door was opened again, and this time, five young people, three men and two women, entered.
"What awful weather! I told you not to come out, but you all insisted on going skiing. Fine, now you're stuck on the road, and you're happy about it!"
The little girl walking in front was clearly in a bad mood; she kept muttering and complaining as soon as she entered the door.
The three men who were with her didn't say anything, but the other girl behind her couldn't help herself. She reached out and tugged at the girl's arm, whispering, "Forget it, she's already out, there's no point in saying anything more."
Besides, when it was finally decided to go, you didn't stop me, did you?
"Yao Jing, stop pretending to be a good person! Weren't you the one who was saying you were having bad luck on the street just now?!"
The girl seemed to have a fiery temper. She raised her hand and shoved away her companion's attempt to persuade her, retorting in an even harsher tone, "Now you know how to say nice things!"
"Alright, alright, stop arguing! This snow might stop soon. Wouldn't it be more fun to go skiing in this heavy snow? Think of something happy."
A boy carrying several boxes of instant noodles came over from the front desk, smiling and trying to smooth things over, which temporarily eased the tension between the two girls.
With five more people arriving, the area around the fire pit became noticeably crowded.
However, since everyone was stranded here because of the heavy snow, they didn't make things too difficult for each other and squeezed in to accommodate this person as well.
"What were you guys talking about?!" These young men were not quiet people, and they quickly got to know Lei Zi and his friends, who were equally cheerful and talkative, and became friends with them.
So at that moment, the girl named Su Yue, who had entered first, casually asked a question. Although she had a bad temper and was a bit aggressive when she entered, she could clearly hear that they seemed to be talking about something.
"Oh, we were just telling a story to pass the time!" Lei Zi didn't think anything of it and naturally pointed to the middle-aged man over there: "Brother Huo, what were you about to say? Continue!"
"Well, it's nothing. Our hometown is in the mountains, and that place has never been well-off. Before the road reached the village, if we wanted to go out, we had to get up before dawn and cross three mountains to go to the town to exchange things."
