Although the Dirk Marbot Street candy store no longer exists, Dirk Marbot Street itself still stands. In fact, due to its long history, it has become a landmark area of the city.
Tourists from all over the world, after visiting the churches and other historical sites, will definitely take a stroll down Deckmarbot Street to see this street, the only one that was not destroyed by the war and still retains its old-fashioned style.
Song Mengmeng and Yao Anna strolled around and soon found the old site of the candy store, following the clues provided by the little girl in the sanatorium.
This place has obviously been rebuilt after the fire, and now a quaint coffee shop stands on the original site.
The girls exchanged glances, but ultimately went inside together.
There weren't many customers in the coffee shop at the moment. Sitting behind the bar was an old lady knitting a sweater with long knitting needles.
Deck Marbot Street still maintains its old habits and traditions. Most shops are family-run or husband-and-wife shops because they are not very large. For example, this coffee shop only has seven tables if you don't count the row of empty seats at the bar.
The sound of the wind chimes at the door startled the old woman sitting behind the bar. She looked up slightly, and when she saw Song Mengmeng and the others enter, she was taken aback for a moment, then smiled and said, "Good morning, would you like something to drink?"
Coffee and snacks—it must be said that the coffee and snacks at this old shop are quite exquisite.
Without the help of a waiter, the old lady was busy running around by herself from beginning to end, but judging from her quick movements, she seemed to be in very good health.
When the last dessert was served and the old lady was about to leave, Song Mengmeng took the initiative to call her back.
"Do you know the candy store on Dirk Marbot Street?!"
Song Mengmeng spoke very directly, without any preamble, and asked the core question that she wanted to ask most at that moment.
The old lady's hand holding the tray trembled slightly, but she quickly calmed down, turned around and smiled at Song Mengmeng: "Of course I know, the place we are in now used to be the site of the Dirk Marbot Street Candy Store."
That fire destroyed half the street, and what was lost was far more than just a candy store!
"You've come here for that legend too?!"
"legend?!"
Hu Yue was taken aback, but quickly grasped the key point in the old lady's words. She frowned at her and asked in a low voice, "What legend?!"
"It's that legend that if you can go back into the candy store on Dirk Marbot Street and buy a Christmas candy, your wish will come true!"
Hu Yue's astonishment puzzled the old lady. She frowned slightly, giving the girls in front of her an expression that said, "I've already seen through you, why are you still pretending?" before continuing to speak with an air of authority, her tone naturally carrying a lecturing tone: "Legends are just legends after all. It's fine to use them as a diversion during a trip, but to take them seriously would be foolish!"
“We’re learning about the history of the Dirk Marbot Street candy store, but not because of that legend.” Yao Anna gently shook her head, looking at the old lady in front of her with a serious expression, and introduced herself in a solemn manner: “I’m a writer. Although I admit that I know about this place because of some legends, I mainly want to collect some information and gather inspiration to prepare for my new book.”
If you could, could you tell us about the candy store on Dirk Marbot Street?!
Clearly, Yao Anna's words immediately changed the old lady's attitude. She became interested in what Yao Anna was saying and, at the enthusiastic invitation of the girls, sat down next to them.
"This happened more than sixty years ago! I was only four or five years old at the time!"
The candy store on Deck Marbot Street is the most famous candy store in our city, and it's also very famous in other surrounding cities.
However, the shop owner had no plans to open a new store, nor did he mention any intention to expand the business.
They simply continue to maintain the same storefront and sell candies that sell out as soon as the store opens!
The shop owner was a very kind person. I remember when I was little, kids like me often got candy from him. We were very happy, and those were truly unforgettable times.
But that fire destroyed everything.
That day was Christmas, and the most attractive thing about the candy store every year was its Christmas candy. I really liked those candy canes; they were mint-flavored, with orange and other flavors mixed together, and even now, thinking about them still makes me feel sweet.
During those few days each year, the whole street is filled with the sweet aroma of syrup emanating from candy stores, which is also the happiest time for children.
No one knows how the fire started.
That night, my dad, mom, and I went to the cathedral to pray. We were only halfway through our prayers when we heard someone screaming outside the cathedral that Deckmarbot Street was on fire.
Many people, forgetting that they had only done half of their prayers, rushed out to try and put out the fire.
After all, many of the people in the church at that time lived near that street.
Almost the entire city was trying to put out the fire, but the fire was simply too large. Even with so many people doing their best to fight it, they still couldn't save the candy store, or the surrounding shops.
