Chapter 13

◎Break the Engagement◎

"Song Chunhua, what do you mean? How can you talk to your elder brother and sister-in-law like that?" Fang Yuehe glared at them, holding the wooden table in the Liang family's main room with one hand.

Liang Zhiqing ignored Song Chunhua and said sternly to Liang Zhigao, "Zhigao, look at your wife. We are doing this for your sake and for Baozhen's sake."

Good? Liang Zhigao used to respect his brother. After all, the elder brother is like a father. But listen to what they say? The abacus beads are clattering.

"Brother, you don't need to interfere in our family affairs. We have called off the engagement with Chen Siming on our own. You guys should do whatever you want." Liang Zhigao pointed at the wooden table with his pipe, clearly intending to kick him out.

This was the first time that Liang Zhiqing had been bullied by Liang Zhigao. This third brother must have grown powerful to the point of speaking to him like that. He was so angry that he turned around and left, his steps becoming quick and hasty.

Fang Yuehe was jogging behind, almost catching up with her husband. "Zhiqing, tell me what kind of people your brother's family is. They are so confused when doing things that they ruined a good marriage. We are so kind, but they don't appreciate it. Bah! If they don't want to marry any respectable man in the city, who else can they marry?"

As she talked, she began to feel regretful. That was a marriage to a city dweller. A few days ago, she had told her second son that she would ask his cousin to arrange a job for her after she moved to the city. Now, everything is gone!

Liang Zhiqing listened to his wife's words, suddenly stopped, turned around, and went in the opposite direction of his home.

"Hey, where are you going?" Fang Yuehe turned around, quite confused.

"Now that things have gotten so bad, there's no way she can't get married. Baozhen is already quite old, and she's already divorced Chen Siming, so she has to find a new partner." Liang Zhiqing thought of his second son who worked part-time at the commune grain station. The director of the grain station had met Baozhen twice and seemed interested, so he smiled and said, "Let's find a new partner for Baozhen."

Liang Zhigao took care of all the major affairs in the Liang family, and he led Liang Baojun into the city to cancel the engagement. Because he was worried about affecting his daughter's reputation, he went to the brigade to discuss this matter with the captain, so that if anyone gossiped in the future, he would have someone to help him.

Liang Baoying stayed at home with Liang Baozhen. The whole village had been talking about this incident for the past two days. It had been a commotion for a long time. She couldn't help feeling sorry for her sister. How could she have met such a person?

Today is the 28th day of the lunar calendar, which was originally Liang Baozhen’s wedding day.

"Baozhen, don't be sad. Don't keep anything in your heart. Tell me." She was very worried about her sister. Anyone would feel bad if they encountered such a thing, not to mention that they were going to get married in a few days.

Liang Baozhen rested her arms on the table, her chin supported by her hands in a daze. She was not too sad, but more angry and confused. That man was such a good pretender that he deceived everyone. If she really married him, would she really live a miserable life like what was said in the book?

"Sister, don't worry about me, just do your thing, I'll be fine in a while."

"Are you really okay?" Liang Baoying asked herself if she could be as calm as her younger sister. If it were her, she would probably want to jump into the river. But then she thought again, it made sense. Her third sister had always been more opinionated than she was since she was a child.

"Yeah." Liang Baozhen sent her elder sister out, stayed in the room to rest for a while, and then got up and went out.

Song Chunhua asked her to rest more at home these two days, just to wait for the discussions outside to die down. She was still right. Some people were short-sighted and said sarcastic things. At this age, no matter what, it was always the girls who suffered.

As soon as Liang Baozhen walked out the door, Song Jianguo came back into the house. He had just come out of the fields and came home to drink some water and mainly to catch his breath.

Today he went to the Youth Educated Home again. Nowadays, every Youth Educated Home is trying hard to find a job and return to the city, except for those like him who are already married and have no legitimate reason to do so.

"Why are you back?" Liang Baoying saw her husband sweating profusely and hurriedly poured him a glass of water.

After drinking a bowl of water, Song Jianguo wiped his sweat and looked at Liang Baozhen's room. He was a little angry and asked, "Where is my third sister?"

"She left because she was bored staying at home." Liang Baoying didn't notice the strange look on the man's face and continued talking to herself, "You said that they were about to get married and yet this happened. Chen Siming is really a piece of shit."

Song Jianguo's mouth slanted, not quite agreeing, "This matter is actually my mother's fault, there was still room for improvement..."

Making a big fuss about the matter really blocked his way. He was still counting on his brother-in-law to help him think of a solution when he returned to the city, but now he had no hope. Because he was in a bad mood, his tone was not very good when he spoke, and he kept blaming her, "Baozhen, why don't you talk to your brother-in-law more? Where can you find such a good marriage?"

"How can that be? Baozhen will be wronged then." Liang Baozhen thought the man was just talking nonsense because he had been working for too long. "Okay, take a break and let's go out together."

...

When Liang Baozhen passed by the neighbor's house while carrying the backpack on her back, she saw that the door of the Dong family was closed. The Dong couple had been unable to raise their heads for the past two days. Knowing that their daughter was having an affair with someone else's fiancé, they felt ashamed. They specially asked the team leader to assign them a job in the farthest field and were not willing to talk to anyone.

As for Dong Jiayan, no one has ever seen her.

Liang Baozhen went out specifically to verify whether the contents of the book were true. According to what was written in the book, her family had a big secret, which even her parents didn't know about.

There is a cemetery on the back mountain of Damei Village. Many of the villagers’ ancestral tombs are located here. However, due to the Four Olds Campaign in recent years, no one has come to visit the cemeteries in a big way, so it is rather desolate.

There are several lonely graves hidden under the trees. When the wind blows, a few leaves float above them.

Liang Baozhen looked at the graves of her grandparents, which were stacked together in the corner, with a messy pile of leaves next to them.

She measured the distance with her feet and pulled away the weeds about six meters away from the ancestral tomb. Liang Baozhen touched the ground, turned around, took out the hoe from her backpack, and started digging.

Soon, the hoe hit something hard inside, and a little yellow light appeared in the dark mud.

Putting down the hoe, Liang Baozhen used her hands to dig and really found the "yellow croaker" here - a total of twelve gold bars.

The book wrote that two years after Liang Baozhen got married, the movement ended. The hero of the book, Chen Siming's brother, came to Damian Village with his younger brothers and sisters. He accidentally discovered the gold bars buried by Grandpa Liang while strolling around.

This money is the symbol of the protagonist's good luck. The Chen brothers used this money to start their business and later became wealthy.

Looking at the golden "yellow croaker", Liang Baozhen was shocked. What was said in the book was true.

In the past, Grandpa Liang once saved a man who was passing by Damian Village. The man gave him gold bars as a reward. However, Grandpa Liang was unable to sleep or eat because of the gold bars. He could not spend them these days. He was always worried that the gold bars would be stolen when he kept them at home, and he could not sleep for nights.

He simply buried the gold bars next to his ancestral tomb, intending to tell his son about it later. However, he died suddenly, and the Liang family didn't even know they had the gold bars, and they were taken away by the Chen family.

Liang Baozhen wrapped the yellow croaker with leaves and put it in a backpack, then added a few more layers of leaves on top. She then carried the backpack back home.

In any case, this thing has to be moved to another place first. The hero in the book has great luck, and perhaps he will have the opportunity to come to the ancestral tomb and find the gold bars.

She was hurrying home, and while concentrating on walking, she suddenly saw a few pairs of torn straw sandals in front of her.

When he looked up, he saw a few scoundrels from the village, staring at the man with a chicken-nest of hair and smiling at him with ill intentions.
