Chapter 15 Mother-in-law

The two were chatting passionately in the house, but Wu Ju was leaning against the door panel of the new house, eavesdropping on their conversation. She wished her ears could penetrate walls so that she could get into the house and hear more clearly.

Ji Zong held up Shu Mei's face with both hands and said, "I never get tired of looking at your face. No matter what you become, you will always be the one I love the most. I will never leave you and will always protect you." As Ji Zong said this, he kissed Shu Mei's mouth and the two began to entangle with each other madly.

The matter of the bridal chamber was really a natural process, something I learned naturally without any guidance.

Soon, the heavy breathing of the two men and the creaking of the bed reached Wu Ju's ears. She had a look of disgust on her face. The son she had raised with great difficulty had never said a single kind word to her, but had completely seduced this vixen who had suddenly appeared out of nowhere and seduced her away. He spoke sweet words to the vixen and defended her in every way, completely ignoring her as his mother. Wu Ju complained inwardly and returned to her bedroom dejected.

The next day, before seven o'clock, Wu Ju banged hard on Shumei and her friends' door, raising her voice and shouting, "Ji Zong, it's almost seven o'clock. Hurry up and have breakfast. You've been delayed for so long, you might lose your job at the brick factory."

"Got it, get up!"

In this new home, everything was unfamiliar to Shumei, and Jizong had to take her to wash and dress.

Wu Ju, who was busy between the kitchen and the dining table, saw the two men being affectionate and holding hands in front of them. She felt very uncomfortable. Their faces were longer than a horse's and blacker than the bottom of a pot.

As soon as the two of them sat down at the table, Wu Ju peeled two boiled eggs and put them into Ji Zong's bowl. "Ji Zong, eat quickly. Mother cooked this especially for you. You must have been tired last night. You need to replenish your energy."

After hearing Wu Ju's words, Shumei blushed with shame. She lowered her head and slurped the porridge in her bowl, not even daring to raise her head to pick up some kimchi. Ji Zong noticed Shumei's discomfort and quickly shouted to stop her.

"Mother..."

Wu Ju closed her mouth reluctantly, looking like she was still not satisfied.

Ji Zong glanced at Shu Mei's Wan Ting and gave one of his Wanting's eggs to Shu Mei. "Shu Mei, come on, let's have one each."

Wu Ju couldn't stand watching Ji Zong do this. "Ji Zong, what are you doing? This is what A Niang cooked for you. You've worked so hard, so you need to replenish your energy. Shu Mei is a woman who doesn't do anything, so isn't it a waste to give it to her?"

"Ji Zong, you eat it! I don't like eggs."

Shumei put the egg back into Jizong's bowl, but even so, the fire in Wu Ju's heart was still ignited by them.

Ji Zong was in a hurry to go to work at the brick factory and had no time to be pretentious with them. He finished his meal in a few bites and finally kept the egg that was meant for Shu Mei. Without saying a word, he forced it back into Shu Mei's bowl.

"I'm full and going to work at the brick factory. Shumei, let your mother take you to familiarize yourself with the situation at home."

After Ji Zong finished speaking, he grabbed the sweat towel on the washstand and hurried out of the house.

Shumei stared at the eggs in the bowl for two seconds, then stood up and chased after Jizong, "Jizong, let me take you out!"

She took Ji Zong's hand and walked him to the elm tree outside the yard. Ji Zong looked around and saw that there was no one around, so he kissed Shu Mei hard.

"Be careful not to be seen by others." Shumei looked around shyly.

"Let them see if they want to. I didn't steal or rob. I kissed my own wife, so why should I feel guilty?" Ji Zong said, kissing Shu Mei again. "Alright, let's go back!"

“Come back soon!”

"Got it, come back quickly!"

Only after Ji Zong's repeated urging did she reluctantly turn back to the courtyard. She sat back down at the table to eat, but the egg Ji Zong had just given her was gone. She glanced at Wu Ju and Zhang Binglin. Wu Ju, standing tall and confident, glared at her angrily. Zhang Binglin, on the other hand, remained expressionless, eating his rice with relish.

It seemed that Wu Ju was waiting for her to come and question her. Shumei thought, if you are looking for trouble, I won't accompany you. Do you think that if you dig a hole, I have to jump in obediently?

She continued to finish the rest of the meal calmly. After everyone finished eating, she took the initiative to help clear the dishes and followed Wu Ju into the kitchen to wash them.

Wu Ju then began to act like a mother-in-law, with her hands on her hips, directing Shumei to do things, and giving Shumei daily tasks. The details of the task list are as follows.

First: Get up at six o'clock every day to prepare breakfast and pig food, and wake up Ji Zong at six fifty to eat.

Second: I wash the dishes after meals and feed the pigs and chickens in the yard. When it’s market time, I help my father-in-law pick bamboo products to sell in town.

Third: Go to work in the fields after 8 o'clock.

Fourth: Come back at 11:30 to make lunch, and do housework while they are taking a nap at noon, such as washing dirty clothes, peeling corn, preparing pig food, etc.

Fifth: Go back to work in the fields at 2:30, finish work before dark and go home to prepare dinner. After finishing the housework, you can prepare bath water or footbath water for Ji Zong and help him go to bed.

While washing dishes, Shumei listened attentively to the tasks Wu Ju assigned her. Although Wu Ju made them sound a bit tedious, they were actually just ordinary household chores, the same ones she had to do at her husband's house. For her, they weren't difficult.

But she didn't expect that this uneducated mother-in-law would speak so arbitrarily. It would be a pity if she didn't become an accountant.

After she finished washing the dishes, Wu Ju took her to work in the fields, while Zhang Binglin was busy making bamboo baskets in the yard. They had been ordered by others and were waiting to be used to dig sweet potatoes.

"Give."

Wu Ju handed Shumei a half-sized bamboo backpack and a hoe. The backpack was half-filled with stuff in a snakeskin bag. Shumei put the backpack on her back without a word. It was quite heavy. She herself carried an empty bamboo backpack.

"Mother, what's in my backpack?"

“Phosphate fertilizer.”

Wu Ju took the lead and walked out of the yard. Shumei shook the backpack on her shoulder and followed her quietly with a hoe on her shoulder.

Zhang's family lived in the west end of the village, and her rapeseed seedlings were planted in the north, while the rapeseed fields were in the southeast. So the two of them had to walk through the entire village in full view of everyone.

If it were in the past, Wu Ju would naturally not think there was anything wrong, but after what happened yesterday, Wu Ju was still a little uneasy and she wanted to avoid everyone.

Shumei was still afraid, keeping her head down, afraid to be recognized. But reality was there; sooner or later, she would have to face her wrongdoing. After a brief inner struggle, she simply held her head high. As long as she acted upright, everyone would see clearly and would eventually give her justice.
