Zhang Binglin was old, after all, and he had little Shuangning with him, and it was night, so the two of them walked, stopping and starting, until the morning star rose in the east, but they hadn't gone very far.
The next day, when Wu Ju discovered that Zhang Binglin and Xiao Shuangning were missing, she didn't care too much at first, thinking that Zhang Binglin had just taken Xiao Shuangning out for a walk.
It wasn't until she hadn't seen the two of them all day that she realized something was wrong.
She and Zhang Xiaoqin began to search around the village, asking everyone they met.
"Wu Ju, you guys are so flustered, what happened?"
The village chief came back from outside and looked at Wu Ju who looked anxious, and couldn't help but ask.
Wu Ju was bent over, breathless from exhaustion. She wiped the sweat from her forehead with her hand while answering the village chief.
"Village Chief! Have you seen my old man and my granddaughter?"
"You know what? I usually see him wandering around the village, but I didn't see him today."
"Oh my! Where on earth did this old man go? Is he safe?"
Although Wu Ju and Zhang Binglin didn't get along, they had been together for decades and had some affection for each other. Now that Zhang Binglin had disappeared, Wu Ju was still worried about his safety.
She was so anxious that she beat her chest and stamped her feet, and worry was written all over her face.
"Wu Ju, has anything happened in your family recently?"
"Something happened?" Wu Ju pondered for a moment, then replied puzzledly, "No, everything has been going well at home lately!"
The village chief thought about it for a moment, then told Wu Ju about Zhang Binglin's recent abnormality.
"That's strange. I thought your family was short of money recently! Binglin has come to my house several times in the past few days to ask if your Shumei's letter has arrived."
"Is there such a thing?"
"Yes! He was so happy that he almost jumped up when he got the letter from your daughter-in-law yesterday."
"What? Shumei's letter has been sent?"
Wu Ju was even more confused. Zhang Binglin, who usually didn't care about these trivial matters, suddenly became so concerned. Not only did he actually get the living expenses sent back by Shumei, but he also deliberately hid it from her. She was puzzled.
She looked distraught and had no intention of paying any attention to the village chief. She kept muttering to herself.
So, he and that girl had planned this all along, wasn't it—what's he up to? They—they wouldn't—Oh no, this damn guy, maybe he took that damn girl to find Shumei.
When she thought of this, she ran home without paying any attention to the village chief's questions.
The village chief called out twice, but seeing that Wu Ju ignored him, he could only shake his head helplessly and walked towards his home carrying his hoe.
When Wu Ju returned home, she rushed to the closet and saw that Zhang Binglin's change of clothes was missing. She was furious and threw the clothes all over the floor, making the whole room a mess, as if it had just been robbed.
"You old fool, how dare you set me up behind my back? Why is my life so miserable? I found such a loser. I haven't stood up for most of my life. I never thought that the only time he had a say, the only time he showed any strength, would be used on me."
Wu Ju sat at the head of the bed, beating her chest and muttering to herself.
She was used to drinking with Zhang Binglin, and she was a little uncomfortable with the sudden absence of someone in the room. She felt inexplicably empty in her heart.
As night fell, Zhang Xiaoqin returned home and saw Wu Ju's appearance and the mess in the house. She asked in confusion.
"Mom, what's wrong? Is there a thief in the house?" Zhang Xiaoqin said as she walked towards the bed. "Mom, what's wrong with you? Why are you so depressed?"
Wu Ju came back to her senses and eagerly grabbed Zhang Xiaoqin's hand, "Xiaoqin, your father ran away from home with Shuangning. He actually didn't care about my life or death for that little bitch, and even gave up the family we had worked so hard to build for decades."
"What? They ran away from home? Will Kang Shumei still send living expenses back?"
When Zhang Xiaoqin heard this, the first thing she thought of was that her "cash cow" had been taken away. She wondered whether she would be able to receive living expenses in the future and whether she would have enough food and drink.
"I don't know if there will be more in the future, but the one this time is definitely gone. It was taken away by your father."
"What? Daddy, you're such a grown man, why is he still playing these childish tricks? He took away all our living expenses. What should we do? Isn't this torturing us to death?"
Zhang Xiaoqin was even more furious than Wu Ju. She started to worry about her food and drink and kept complaining.
