Chapter 155: Running Away from Home

As soon as Zhang Binglin entered the room, he rushed over, rescued Shuangning from Zhang Xiaoqin's hands, and protected little Shuangning behind him.

If it was Wu Ju, he really wouldn't dare to do anything, but Zhang Xiaoqin was his daughter after all. No matter how arrogant and domineering she was, she wouldn't be so disobedient and unfilial as to fight with her own father!

"Father, you keep protecting her like this. You'll regret it one day. Mother, you don't care about Father either. Am I your biological daughter, or is she, Xiao Shuangning, the real one?"

Zhang Xiaoqin was quite surprised by Zhang Binglin's toughness. She was quite unprepared to see her father, who was usually so taciturn, suddenly scold her.

"As a man, don't get involved in matters between us women. Just do what you need to do. Shuangning, come over and do your work."

Wu Ju waved to Xiao Shuangning to come over. Xiao Shuangning received the instruction and moved towards the well.

Zhang Binglin grabbed Xiao Shuangning, snatched the dirty clothes from her hands, and threw them heavily into the washing basin.

"Ningning, let's go back to the house with grandpa."

How could Wu Ju let Zhang Binglin get the upper hand in front of her? She threw the clothes in her hand heavily into the basin and stood up angrily.

"Zhang Binglin, are you rebelling? When will it be your turn to be in charge of this family? If you have nothing to do, why don't you go to the village chief's house and see if Shumei's letter has arrived?"

When Zhang Binglin heard Wu Ju talking about the letter, he was shocked by his guilty conscience. He stopped and was about to go into the house, with cold sweat on his hands.

His hands were clutching his pockets tightly, and he was sweating profusely from nervousness.

"I—I've read it, but it hasn't been sent back yet."

"Hey! The sun is rising from the west. When did you start caring about these things? Aren't you usually indifferent to family matters?"

Zhang Binglin's abnormal behavior made Wu Ju very confused.

"Oh—I ran into the village chief at the village entrance and asked him about it."

Zhang Binglin responded stutteringly and hurriedly pulled Xiao Shuangning into the house.

"Stop, are you deaf? Do you really think you're the head of the family? You want to protect her, right? Then I won't wash the clothes anymore, you do it."

Wu Ju rushed into the house angrily.

Zhang Xiaoqin glanced at Zhang Binglin and Xiao Shuangning with disdain, and walked into the house, fanning herself with a palm-leaf fan.

Zhang Binglin squatted down and grabbed Xiao Shuangning's scarred hand.

"Ningning, go play over there. Grandpa will finish washing these clothes first. Tomorrow, Grandpa can take you to find your mother."

When Zhang Binglin spoke, he deliberately looked in the direction of the main hall, and made sure that Wu Ju and Zhang Xiaoqin had entered the house, then he lowered his voice and spoke to Xiao Shuangning.

"Really? Grandpa, is everything you said true?"

Xiao Shuangning burst into laughter and asked excitedly while jumping.

"Shh! Ningning, keep your voice down. This is a secret between us. If your grandma and aunt find out, we won't be able to leave."

Xiao Shuangning bit her lower lip and nodded vigorously.

Only then did Zhang Binglin squat down and concentrate on washing clothes.

The sensible little Shuangning couldn't bear to let Zhang Binglin work alone, so she squatted down to help.

"Grandpa, Ningning is here to help you."

Zhang Binglin looked at the well-behaved and sensible little Shuangning, and he was even more convinced that his decision was right. Such a sweet and lovely child should be nurtured and raised with all possible care, to become a gentle and lovely girl, instead of being bullied like she is now, leaving behind a shadow of childhood and living in fear like a frightened bird.

He had successfully intercepted Shumei's letter from the village chief. This time, Shumei sent eighty yuan, twenty yuan more than last time.

But he hadn't figured out how to successfully slip away with Xiao Shuangning from under Wu Ju's nose.

Anyway, he knew that at this moment, he must not fall out with Wu Ju. He must obey her every word and not let her have any suspicion, otherwise it would be even more difficult to leave.

Summer clothes are thin, and with the scorching sun, the clothes hung out to dry at noon are already completely dry by the evening.

Zhang Binglin looked at the clothes hanging on the clothesline and suddenly had an idea. He took the initiative to collect the clothes. While collecting the clothes, he secretly packed up his own clothes and hid them in the guest room in the courtyard.

Although Shuangning was only five years old, Wu Ju didn't want her to disturb her sleep, so she left her alone in the guest room in the yard.

At the beginning, Shuangning was so scared that she couldn't sleep all night long lying in bed. But as time went by, she got used to it, got used to the loneliness.

Instead, she was grateful for her own space, free from the constant vigilance of Wu Ju and Zhang Xiaoqin. She was like a little adult, more sensible than other children her age, and knew how to compromise to protect herself.

Zhang Binglin used to think that this was not a good thing. The child was so young, and he left her alone in the yard. What if she fell under the bed, turned over the quilt in the middle of the night, or wet the bed in the middle of the night?

So, from that day on, Zhang Binglin had one more thing to do every day. He would always get up in the middle of the night to check on Xiao Shuangning, cover her with a quilt, and ask her to get up and pee.

Now it seems that this is simply adding wings to a tiger. He can take the opportunity of getting up to see Xiao Shuangning and sneak away with Xiao Shuangning.

That night, when it was late and quiet, Wu Ju and Zhang Xiaoqin were already fast asleep.

He climbed out of bed quietly, woke up Xiao Shuangning who was still sleeping, and quietly slipped away from home with Xiao Shuangning, carrying his simply packed luggage.

It was a dark and windy night, and they couldn't see their hands in front of them. Fortunately, Zhang Binglin had prepared a flashlight in advance, so they could move forward in the dark. In this way, the grandfather and grandson set out on the road to find Shumei.
