Chapter 21: Ji Zong's secret spreads like wildfire

"Ji Zong, don't overthink it. It's not a death sentence, is it? As long as we don't give up, I believe the child will come sooner or later."

Ji Zong still said nothing, and the two of them returned home before sunset.

As soon as she entered the room, Wu Ju started asking questions non-stop.

"Ji Zong! How's the test going? Did the doctor say when I can get pregnant? When can I hold my grandson? Oh, oh...what's wrong with you? Mother is asking you a question!"

Ji Zong had no business paying attention to her at the moment. He went into his room without saying a word.

"Mother, please stop asking and let Ji Zong calm down."

"I'm talking to my son, when is it your turn to interrupt? You useless thing, if it weren't for you, how could my Ji Zong be so dejected? Why would he not try to earn money even though he has it, and instead accompany you to the hospital every day? You're a chicken that can't lay eggs. What sin did my Zhang family commit to marry such a jinx like you..."

Wu Ju pointed at Shumei's head and cursed non-stop. Shumei lowered her head in grievance, unwilling to say a word. She was afraid that if she let slip something, she would reveal Jizong's affairs and make Jizong lose his dignity as a man.

Ji Zong rushed out of the house with a dark face, pulled Shu Mei behind him, and shouted at Wu Ju: "Enough, stop scolding Shu Mei. It's my fault, it's all my fault. I'm sick and I can't have children. Are you satisfied?"

After saying that, he slammed the door shut. Wu Ju, who was about to continue questioning, almost broke her nose.

What? There's something wrong with my own son. How could that be possible? Childbirth has always been a woman's responsibility. When did it ever become a man's business? Ji Zong must be using me as a shield to protect his wife. This vixen had actually made Ji Zong lose even his dignity as a man. How outrageous!

She banged on the door hard, determined to get to the bottom of it.

"Ji Zong, please explain yourself clearly. Are you making up lies to fool my mother again just to protect your wife? You have to explain yourself clearly today. You can't do this! If this gets out, people will stab you in the back. How will you live your life in the future?"

Ji Zong couldn't stand it anymore, so he opened the door and threw a stack of checklists into Wu Ju's hands.

"It's written in black and white. It's clear that I, your son, am unfilial and cannot carry on the Zhang family's lineage. Mother, can you please stop talking? Can you please let me be quiet for a while?"

Ji Zong closed the door again. Wu Ju held the checklist, unsure what to do. She couldn't read, so how could she understand what this checklist was?

What should I do? Shumei can't have children. At worst, Jizong can kick her out and marry someone who can. But if that's Jizong's fault, then the Zhang family will be extinct! Oh my god! What should I do?

"Smoke, smoke, smoke. All you do all day is smoke. Your Zhang family is going to be extinct, and you still have the mood to smoke. I'm so unlucky to marry a loser like you."

Wu Ju rushed to Zhang Binglin, snatched his pipe from his hand, threw it to the ground and stomped on it again and again, crying, making a fuss and cursing.

"What else can I do? I'm not a doctor. I'm telling you to stop worrying about it. Ji Zong isn't a child anymore. They know how to handle their own affairs."

Zhang Binglin, sitting on a chair in the main hall, spoke calmly, his expression nonchalant. Wu Ju continued to chatter beside him, but Zhang Binglin sat there in silence, not saying a word to her. Fortunately, Zhang Binglin had a good temper, otherwise the two of them would have fought countless times.

Wu Ju was tired of scolding and finally stopped, sitting on a stool and drinking water in big gulps.

Seeing the medical checklist in her hand, she wondered in her mind, "I can't understand what's written on it. Could it be that Ji Zong is taking advantage of this weakness of hers and deliberately using some waste paper to cover her up?" No, she had to find someone to identify it.

The next day, Wu Ju took the checklist and went to the village chief to help her identify the body. With the village chief's words, she finally believed that Ji Zong was not lying to her, and she finally believed that their Zhang family would be extinct.

She did find out the truth, but it caused great hardship to Ji Zong.

They say there's no such thing as a wall that's impenetrable. Someone didn't know who had leaked the news, but within a few days, word of Ji Zong's illness spread throughout "Little Taiwan." Previously, the locals' after-dinner talk had been all about Shu Mei, but now, the tide had turned, and everyone began to mock and ridicule Ji Zong.

Despite this widespread rumor, the Zhang family remained in the dark. Jizong, comforted by Shumei, returned to work at the brick factory as usual. Wu Ju, knowing it was her son's fault, stopped harassing Shumei and became a kind and amiable mother-in-law. The Zhang family regained their long-lost peace.

Now that the autumn harvest season has passed, every household has some free time and is busy preparing some simple New Year's goods to welcome the annual Spring Festival.

Although the Zhang family was not very wealthy, Shumei also prepared some bacon. When the meat was ready, she found that there was no salt at home. She took off her apron and prepared to go to the storage room to buy some.

When buying salt, Wen Dazui made some sarcastic remarks, but Shumei didn't take it seriously. She said nothing, took the salt and walked back.

"Isn't this Shumei?"

Shumei heard the voice and looked up. It was Niu Erwa, the man who had come to her house to propose marriage, the idle bachelor Niu Erwa. Shumei didn't want to be associated with such a man. She tried to avoid Niu Erwa and continue walking. But Niu Erwa was like a dog-skin plaster, playing a game of chicken with her.

"Get out of the way."

"Are you anxious? Your man is not good enough, why don't you seem anxious?"
