Chapter 228: Fallen Leaves Return to Their Roots

Xiaomei's mother was still lying on the coffin crying, and her children were guarding her helplessly.

It seemed that she didn't listen to Shumei's persuasion, so Shumei could only turn around and leave in dejection. She originally wanted to go home, but when she looked up and saw the sunset in the sky, she remembered that Boyi said he would be back today.

The sun has already set, but there is still no movement. Has he come back?

She stopped and muttered quietly to herself.

After a moment, her feet walked towards Boyijia uncontrollably.

She came to Boyi's house. The gate was locked. She took a look at the lock that was locked tightly and walked slowly towards the village entrance.

Shumei wandered back and forth at the entrance of the village, waiting for Boyi to return.

Xiaomei's elder brother felt as if his heart was pierced by thousands of arrows when he saw his mother with white spots on her temples.

He was a seven-foot-tall man, but he couldn't help but squeeze out tears. He didn't want to be seen by his family, so he hid aside to wipe his tears.

He smoked one cigarette after another with an extremely serious expression.

His mother had been tossing and turning all day, and he wouldn't let her wait here in the open air until tomorrow morning! But he couldn't persuade his mother to leave and abandon his sister's coffin.

He thought hard and finally came up with a solution that would satisfy both parties, but this approach might be unacceptable to ordinary people.

He didn't know whether his daughter-in-law could understand his actions.

Forget it, let’s give it a try!

He put out the cigarette in his hand, walked over to his wife, and hesitated to speak. He still couldn't open his mouth. After struggling, he decided to go and persuade his mother first.

"Mother, you've been busy all day. How about I find a place for you to rest? We're here with you, my sister! You don't have to stay here."

"Son! Please let me accompany your sister for the last time! She died so tragically, and now she is abandoned in this wilderness. She is so pitiful and lonely."

As Xiaomei's mother spoke, tears began to fall like rain, and he really didn't dare to continue persuading her.

Helplessly, he could only use the method he had just thought of. He walked up to his wife again and said, "Wife, I want to discuss something with you."

"What's the matter? Tell me!"

"Look, this isn't a solution. The Fu family are so heartless. Even if they manage to bury Xiaomei tomorrow morning, she won't be around for them to pay their respects during the Qingming Festival. We haven't been able to get justice for her, but at least she won't be alone in her death! She won't have her grave overgrown with weeds in a few years, making it hard to even find it when we want to pay our respects!"

"Why don't I quite understand what you are saying?" His wife looked at him with a puzzled look, not knowing what he wanted to express.

"What I mean is, I'll find someone to carry Xiaomei back to our house for burial later."

Seeing that his wife couldn't understand his beating around the bush, he went straight to the point.

"What?" His wife opened her eyes wide in anger and screamed.

He was afraid that his mother would hear it and be upset again, so he excitedly stepped forward to cover his wife's mouth and asked her to speak more quietly.

"Speak softly, or your mother will be sad if she hears you."

His wife forcibly pried his hands away and lowered her voice, frowning as she said, "Are you crazy? Bringing a married daughter back to her parents' home for burial? How can that be justified? Isn't that simply bringing bad luck home? Besides, even if we ignore that, how are we going to get there? How can we carry such a heavy coffin back all by ourselves?"

"As long as you agree, this will be easy. Just find a tractor and give the driver a big red envelope."

"I--"

Although his wife felt aggrieved, she thought carefully: the person was dead, so why should she be so hard on a dead person? After all, this was her husband's biological sister.

She was not a petty or mean person. Seeing her man's pleading expression, she softened her heart and could only agree to his seemingly unreliable idea.

She was stunned for a long time before she responded.

"Alright! As long as my mother doesn't object, I have no objection."

"Thank you, my wife. I knew you had the best heart and would definitely not stand by and watch someone die." He gave his wife a deep hug.

He got his wife's consent, took her with him, and couldn't wait to tell his mother about this idea.

"Mother, instead of letting them bury my sister hastily and never care about her again, why don't we take my sister home and find her a good piece of land in our hometown? That way, we can go and burn some paper for her during Qingming Festival or something like that."

Hearing the sound, Xiaomei's mother raised her head from the coffin and looked at her son with incredible eyes.

For her, this was a great thing. She was really touched that her son cared so much about his sister and considered her feelings.

However, this was an unlucky thing, and she was afraid that her daughter-in-law would have an opinion, so she shifted her gaze to her daughter-in-law.

Her daughter-in-law immediately understood what she meant and quickly agreed, "Mother, I have no objection. We are all family and should help each other, especially since my sister has fallen into such a situation."

After hearing this, she burst into tears of gratitude, held her daughter-in-law's hand tightly, and kept thanking her.

She thought that if she could bury her daughter back in her hometown, it would be a true return to her roots. Suddenly, she felt less sad and less guilty.

When Xiaomei rushed back to her parents' home, it was because she had tried her best to persuade Xiaomei to come back. If she had not persuaded Xiaomei to come back, Xiaomei would not have ended up like this.

She thanked her son and daughter-in-law from the bottom of her heart.
