Chapter 258: Self-Directed and Self-Acted

Seeing this, Mother Fu, who was feeding the pigs in the yard, dropped the pig food scoop in her hand and walked over to express her concern.

Although Zhang Xiaoqin had gone a bit too far, the two families had been neighbors for decades after all, so Mother Fu did not vent her anger on Wu Ju.

"Wu Ju! What's wrong? Is it serious? Why don't we go to the hospital right away?"

When Wu Ju heard this, an idea struck her. "It's useless! I just got some medicine from the clinic yesterday, and it didn't help at all. I think we should go to town to check it out."

"Then—Mother, I'll go with you!" Zhang Xiaoqin quickly took over the conversation tactfully, turning back to Mother Fu behind her and saying, "Mother, Rongrong is in your care."

Without waiting for Fu's mother's response, she helped Wu Ju out of the yard.

Mother Fu stood there in a daze, looking helplessly at the child sitting in the cradle.

Zhang Xiaoqin supported Wu Ju and walked towards the village entrance with difficulty.

Wu Ju noticed Fu Mama's line of sight and immediately straightened up, deciding not to pretend anymore.

"Mother, what are you doing? Keep pretending!"

"This—you've already come out, haven't you? Why are you still pretending?"

"Oh! I did come out, but there are so many people in the village watching! I have to let everyone know that I really am sending you to the town to see a doctor."

"Ah? What's in that gourd?"

Wu Ju's face was full of confusion, and she was even more confused about Zhang Xiaoqin's behavior.

"Mother, don't worry about this. Just pretend to be sick. From now on, if anyone asks you, just say that I really did accompany you to the town to see a doctor today."

Wu Ju was even more confused, but she didn't plan to ask any more questions. She continued to bend over, pressing her hands on her stomach, pretending to be in pain.

Villager A: "Aunt Wu, what's wrong? You look unwell."

Wu Ju replied weakly, "Yes, this illness came like a mountain. I was fine last night, but I woke up feeling terribly uncomfortable this morning. So, I asked Xiaoqin to accompany me to the town hospital."

Villager A: "We should go check it out. He's in so much pain he can't even speak. Go quickly!"

Zhang Xiaoqin smiled awkwardly and nodded to Villager A, then supported Wu Ju and continued walking forward.

When she saw Villager A walking away, she whispered to Wu Ju, "Mother, you really acted like one."

"Of course. Do you think your mother has lived these decades in vain? Ginger is always spicy with age, haven't you heard?" Wu Ju said proudly. At first, she only boasted about herself.

The two of them supported each other and walked slowly towards the village entrance.

Niu Wa was waiting nervously at the door and saw Zhang Xiaoqin passing by his house.

Zhang Xiaoqin gave her an affirmative look and nodded vigorously, indicating that he should proceed according to the opportunity.

Not far from the village entrance, Wu Ju stopped pretending, and she was unwilling to accompany Zhang Xiaoqin to the town.

"Xiaoqin! Is this almost the end of the performance? I have an appointment! I don't have time to go to town with you."

Wu Ju had made an appointment with her old boyfriend to attend a temple fair together today. She didn't want to break the appointment with her like-minded old friend because of Zhang Xiaoqin's boring and confusing things.

"Okay, okay, my dear mother, you are a busy person, go ahead and do your work! Then you have to tell me, when do you plan to come back?"

"Well, let me think—probably around six or seven in the afternoon!"

"Okay, I'll wait for you here at six o'clock. Remember, don't go back to the village alone, otherwise all my efforts will be in vain."

"Okay, okay, let's go!"

After Wu Ju finished speaking, she left alone.

Zhang Xiaoqin thought hard about where she should go to kill this boring day. After much deliberation, she finally thought of a good place, that is, Wang Changxing's place. This day should be enough for a round trip.

Thinking of this, she hurried towards Wang Changxing Village.

The sun rises and sets, and a day passes in the blink of an eye.

Zhang Xiaoqin went ahead of Wu Ju and returned to the place where they had parted in the morning to wait for Wu Ju.

She wandered around there, anxiously waiting for Wu Ju to come. After waiting for a long time, Wu Ju's lover finally sent Wu Ju back.

She saw Wu Ju from afar and quickly ran to meet her. She was anxious to go back and see if Niu Wa had missed anything.

"Mother, what's the big deal? Look, what time is it now? Didn't we agree on six o'clock?" Zhang Xiaoqin went up and started to speak rapidly. Only after she finished speaking did she notice the old man standing next to Wu Ju. "What's this?"

"Xiaoqin! This is Uncle Zhong, my mother's friend." Wu Ju began to introduce her lover to Zhang Xiaoqin, and also introduced her daughter to the old man, "Old Zhong! This is my daughter, Xiaoqin."

Zhang Xiaoqin looked embarrassed, but she smiled and called out, "Uncle Zhong! We're in a hurry to get back, so we won't say much to you. We're leaving first."

Without waiting for the two old people to react, Zhang Xiaoqin pulled Wu Ju away and hurried towards the village.

Before Wu Ju could say goodbye to Old Man Zhong, she turned around and shouted anxiously, "Old Zhong! Go back! Be careful on the road. See you tomorrow."

Old man Zhong waved, nodded, and watched Wu Ju and Zhang Xiaoqin walk away.

As soon as they entered the village, the villagers saw Wu Ju and Zhang Xiaoqin and quickly came up to talk to them.

Villager B: "Xiaoqin! You're finally back! Something big happened at home. Go back and take a look! Your parents-in-law are so worried."

Zhang Xiaoqin immediately guessed that it must be Niu Wa who successfully stole the child, so she was not surprised.

Wu Ju, on the other hand, opened her eyes wide and asked in confusion, "What's going on?"
