The Fu family, including Zhang Xiaoqin, were all looking forward to Fu Jun's return, but they kept waiting and still saw no return.
Previously, it was the Fu family's elderly couple who were worried, but as time went by, Zhang Xiaoqin couldn't hold back any longer. She couldn't understand why Fu Jun hadn't returned in such a long time since the elderly couple had notified him. Unable to bear it any longer, she had to ask Fu's mother for the reason.
Mother Fu was peeling corn cobs on the eaves, and Zhang Xiaoqin went forward to help.
Mother Fu was a little surprised. Zhang Xiaoqin, who had always been a quiet woman, was actually helping out with the chores. She glanced at Zhang Xiaoqin with disbelief, but remained silent, lowering her head and continuing to work.
"Mother, have you contacted Jun recently?"
"what?"
"Look, Jun's been away for so long. Isn't there a line in a song that goes, 'Go home often when you have nothing to do?' Even if he doesn't come to see me, he'll still come home to see you two, right? This is his home after all. Even if I'm wrong in a thousand ways, he wouldn't not come home, right? Husband and wife quarrel at the head of the bed and make up at the foot of the bed. That's just life! Isn't it like this? Teeth and tongue are so good, but the tongue still gets bitten sometimes, right?"
Zhang Xiaoqin rambled on with only one goal: to know what this family of three was selling and why Fu Jun hadn't returned home yet.
Mother Fu's heart tightened, her eyes became moist, and she stopped peeling corn.
"I—I don't know what happened to Ajun. I called him a few months ago and asked him to come back, and he promised to come back, but there's still no news. I also called his workplace, and they said he'd passed away. Maybe he really had an accident. My poor son, where are you? Come back soon!"
Fu's mother's eyes were filled with tears as she spoke. They had thought about going to look for Fu Jun, but it was a long way off and there were so many people around. The old couple could neither read nor know the way, so they really had no idea where to start.
Sure enough, something happened. If Fu Jun really knew that I was cheating on him, he would definitely want to grow wings and fly back. How could he hide and not come back? Zhang Xiaoqin thought secretly in her heart, looking distraught.
Mother Fu was in tears. While Zhang Xiaoqin was distracted, she actually held the basket and was about to kneel down to Zhang Xiaoqin.
"Xiaoqin, even if I beg you, please go find Ajun. As long as Ajun can come back safely, we will let bygones be bygones and live a good life as a family."
Even if Zhang Xiaoqin disliked the old woman, she was older than her, and she wanted to live a few more years. She didn't want to die early.
She hurriedly and laboriously helped Fu's mother up, "Mother, what are you talking about? Jun is my man, and I have an obligation to care about his safety. If you had told me earlier, I wouldn't have waited until now."
"Are you really willing to help go out and look for Jun?"
"Yes!" Zhang Xiaoqin nodded affirmatively, "It's just that the journey to the south is long, and there's the issue of money..."
"Money is not a problem. As long as you are willing to look for it, we will be able to raise enough money even if we have to sell everything we have. There is no time to lose. Just pack up and leave now. I will go and help you raise the money." Mother Fu wiped the tears from her face, and was so excited that she was at a loss.
"Now?"
"Yes, yes, yes. The child is missing, and now there's no news of the child's father. This family is about to fall apart. We can't wait any longer."
Zhang Xiaoqin pondered for a moment and decided that this wasn't such a bad thing. She could just think of it as a trip, with someone reimbursing her travel expenses. If something happened to Fu Jun, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for her to find out sooner.
"Okay, mother, I'll go clean up now, you go get the money!"
"Hey hey hey!" Mother Fu responded and walked into the house, rummaging through the drawers and cabinets looking for money, and took out the old couple's coffin books.
A few hours later, Zhang Xiaoqin set out on the journey to find her husband, and the Fu family elders sent her to the village entrance.
The old couple of the Fu family made a desperate bet and put all their belongings on Zhang Xiaoqin, hoping that Zhang Xiaoqin could find Fu Jun back.
However, they never imagined that their actions were like letting a tiger return to the mountains. If Zhang Xiaoqin saw the glamorous world outside, how could she possibly return to this poor and desolate mountain valley?
One day, two days, one month, two months...
Time slipped away from their fingertips bit by bit. The old couple of the Fu family hoped and hoped, but their son never came back. Now they have lost their nominal daughter-in-law as well.
Time flies, and four years have passed in a flash. There is still no news of Fu Jun. Not only that, even Zhang Xiaoqin has disappeared.
Niu Wa would go to the welfare home in town every now and then, either by climbing over the wall or standing far away and sneaking around, he would find ways to secretly take a look at his daughter to see if she was healthy and if she had grown taller or fatter.
The child really looked exactly like him. There had been no news from Zhang Xiaoqin, and he couldn't make up his mind whether to take the child back, so this dragged on for four years.
He watched the children from the welfare home being taken away one by one, and he was really afraid that one day he would not be able to see his daughter again.
Sometimes he would eavesdrop on the children talking among themselves, complaining about their parents' cruelty in abandoning them. Niu Wa was so heartbroken that he wanted to rush out from the dark, pick up the child, and tell her openly that he was her biological father.
Shumei and her family of three endured humiliation and tried their best not to have anything to do with the villagers. Even if the villagers deliberately made trouble for them, they tried their best to pretend to turn a blind eye.
It was their tolerance that brought them a few years of peaceful life. Behind closed doors, the three of them lived happily together, their days going by in high spirits.
