"I've been here. Liu Erniang said it's not that serious yet, it's just my water breaking. I'll call her when my stomach hurts."
"Really? Just wait like this? Is this okay? Don't hold my son back." Ji Zong stroked Shumei's unusually big belly, looked at Wu Ju with suspicion, and then looked at Shumei.
"It's okay, that's how women give birth."
"Okay, since my mother has been through this before and she said so, there must be no problem. Let's wait a little longer! We've already waited for so long, so we don't mind waiting a little longer."
Tang Boyi, who was eavesdropping outside the door, was worried when he heard such a conversation! If Wen Xiaomei had been sent to the hospital earlier, little Youchen would not have lost his mother at birth.
"Ji Zong, Ji Zong, come out, I have something to tell you."
Hearing Tang Boyi's voice, Shumei was actually a little surprised, "Boyi is here too?"
"He insisted on coming with me, and I couldn't stop him. Okay, you just take a good rest! I'll go and see what he wants to say." Ji Zong reluctantly let go of Shumei's hand and walked out of the room impatiently.
As soon as they left, Boyi dragged Jizong into the courtyard and earnestly urged him to take Shumei to the town hospital. Initially, Jizong felt it was unnecessary and firmly opposed Boyi's unnecessary action. However, Boyi refused to give in. He pointed out Wen Xiaomei's previous experience and practically begged Jizong to consider Shumei's safety.
Ji Zong felt that what Boyi said was not entirely unreasonable. In addition, considering the safety of the child and Shumei, after all, this child was what he had been looking forward to for a long time. In the end, he reluctantly agreed.
Back in the house, he searched for a quilt in the closet and told Shumei about Boyi's idea. "Shumei! Boyi suggested taking you to the hospital to give birth. I'll take you to the hospital in town right now."
This was also Shumei's first time, and she didn't know much about it. "Is this necessary?"
"Yeah! Why bother going to the hospital? Ji Zong's grandmother gave birth to eight daughters and one boy, all at home. Now she has many children and grandchildren, right? I also gave birth to Ji Zong at home. Don't all the children in our village give birth at home? Don't bother with it. It's a waste of money and energy." When Wu Ju heard Ji Zong say he wanted to go to the hospital, she was unhappy and kept objecting.
"What about little sister Wen? Mother, hurry up and pack your things! This is your own grandson and daughter-in-law."
Ji Zong's words left Wu Ju speechless. She stammered and didn't know how to object.
Ji Zong carried the quilt to the yard and spread it on the small cart he made himself. Boyi was also helping out.
Everyone pulled the cart and rushed to the town hospital. Ji Zong completed the paperwork, and Shu Mei was admitted to the hospital's delivery room. Ji Zong stayed by her bedside, never leaving.
Wu Ju, Zhang Binglin, and Tang Boyi were standing on a long wooden bench outside the clinic.
A short while later, a doctor and a nurse arrived to perform a prenatal checkup on Shumei. The delivery room was occupied by several pregnant women, their families waiting nearby. As soon as the doctor entered, he asked Jizong to draw the curtains. He then opened Shumei's belly and began to examine her.
This doctor was about fifty years old and looked quite experienced. "Wow! These are twins?"
"Twins?" Shumei and Jizong asked in unison, both of them could hardly believe their ears.
"Don't you know? Look how obvious it is! One on each side, be happy! This is a blessing earned through several lifetimes of cultivation!" The doctor pointed at Shumei's belly, which looked a bit like Luo Feng's, and explained to them, his tone tinged with envy. "Rest well. If you're hungry, eat something quickly. You'll have the strength to give birth later. If you have a stomachache, come to the clinic and call us."
"Okay, okay, thank you, doctor!" Ji Zong smiled and sent the doctor out of the delivery room. He was so happy in his heart. As soon as he returned to the bed, he stroked Shumei's belly, "Shumei, twins, did you hear that? You are so amazing! You only gave birth to two children in this lifetime. You are the great contributor to our family! No wonder your belly is so much bigger than theirs. My wife, you have worked hard. I will definitely treat you twice as well in the future..."
Shumei also had a smile on her face, and looking at Jizong's happy smile, she couldn't stop smiling.
Early the next morning, Shumei's stomach started to hurt. It was just a slight pain at first. Seeing that Jizong was sleeping soundly on the bed, Shumei did not disturb him. She only woke Jizong up when the pain in her stomach became unbearable.
"Ji Zong, I'm afraid she's about to give birth. Go call the doctor."
Ji Zong rubbed his bleary eyes as he walked and hurried out to find a doctor. The doctor pushed Shu Mei into the delivery room on a stretcher, and everyone waited anxiously outside the delivery room.
The delivery room door wasn't well insulated, and Shumei's cries could be heard through it. Jizong was terribly worried! He wandered around the delivery room door for several times, and finally, perhaps tired, he sat down on the long wooden bench in the corridor in a daze.
Tang Boyi was also very nervous and walked to the hospital yard alone to get some fresh air.
The courtyard of the town hospital was carpeted with golden fallen leaves, and a few unknown birds chirped in the trees, making the scene seem particularly desolate. Boyi leaned against a large tree, chain-smoking, his face thick with smoke and a heavy expression.
Zhang Jizong sat on a stool with his head in his hands. The red vest on his body was covered with brick dust, and the original color of the pair of army green canvas shoes on his feet could no longer be seen.
Zhang Binglin sat beside Ji Zong, wrapping his tobacco leaves nonchalantly. Ever since Wu Ju found out she was expecting twins, she'd become even more concerned about Shu Mei, or more precisely, about the baby in her belly. She anxiously paced around the delivery room door, muttering to herself, "Is this a golden baby? I've come all this way, and I can't deliver it."
