There were so many things I wanted to say to Shumei, but they were all wiped out by Shumei's warm smile.
The two looked at each other lovingly. Ji Zong freed his hand and gently stroked Shu Mei's face. At this moment, everything was self-evident.
The next day, before daybreak, Shumei got up, made breakfast, and changed Jizong's diaper, which hadn't been changed overnight. She simply ate a bowl of porridge and headed out.
This was the first day of a new life. Shumei set out for the brick factory with full confidence and a vision of a bright future.
Amidst everyone's surprised gazes, Shumei officially started working, lifting bricks, pushing bricks, and stacking bricks. In addition to burning bricks, Shumei also did not miss any of them.
Seeing Shumei carrying the child, sweating profusely, Boyi felt very distressed and from time to time brought tea and water to Shumei, handed her a sweat towel. He also wiped the sweat off Shumei's head with his own hands, which felt like the wife followed her husband's lead.
The workers were also discussing the matter. One lecherous worker even pulled Boyi aside and asked, "Boyi, is this your new wife? You are so cruel, letting a woman do such heavy work."
"What? Don't talk nonsense, this is Zhang Jizong's daughter-in-law."
Hearing what his coworker said, Boyi hurriedly explained and was unwilling to pay any more attention to the coworker. He simply said one sentence and returned to his post, unloading the bricks from the bucket cart.
The worker ran after him and asked, "It's Kai Tsung's wife! I've heard Kai Tsung's wife is incredibly beautiful, and seeing her today, she's truly as beautiful as ever. I heard Kai Tsung is paralyzed, is that true?"
"What do you think? If Ji Zong hadn't been paralyzed, Shu Mei wouldn't have come here to suffer."
As Tang Boyi spoke, a hint of sadness appeared in his eyes, and the corner of his eyes involuntarily glanced in the direction of Shumei. He was afraid that he was heartbroken for Shumei again.
"Shumei? So her name is Shumei! She's so young, but she's living a life of widowhood. What a waste of such a good thing."
The worker stared at Shumei without blinking, his eyes filled with lust and malice. Boyihui revealed his inherent ill intentions and kicked him in the ass.
"Jianzhong, I'm telling you, don't even think about hitting on Shumei. If you dare to touch her, I'll skin you alive."
Boyi yelled at his coworkers seriously, trying to nip Jianzhong's lustful and malicious intentions in the bud.
Even if he cannot be Shumei's lover who will grow old together, he will be her confidante who will protect her all her life and do his best to clear the obstacles on her path.
Jianzhong patted the dust off his pants and said, "It's none of your business! She's not your wife, why are you so worried? You're just allowing officials to set fires but not allowing the common people to light lamps. You can think about it, so why can't I? Do you think you can eat it all by yourself?"
"You...you..." Boyi picked up the sorghum broom on the pile of bricks and slapped Jianzhong, who was still chattering there with an arrogant look on his face.
Jianzhong grabbed the broom with his backhand and dodged it safely.
"Boyi, it's not right for you to do this. They say brothers are like limbs and women are like clothes. After all, we have worked together for so many years, but you beat up your brother just for a widow." Jianzhong deliberately questioned Boyi loudly, attracting the surrounding workers.
Seeing this, Boyi felt that he had been a little impulsive. If he made a big fuss about this, wouldn't that destroy Shumei's future? How would she continue to work in the factory? How would she view him in the future?
"What's going on? Why are you two arguing with each other?"
The workers who were watching started asking questions all over the place, and pairs of curious eyes were staring at them.
"Okay, okay, you two, give me some advice. I'm new here..." Jianzhong is a bachelor and doesn't care about his reputation. He wants to bring the matter to light without any scruples and seek justice for himself.
Before he could finish his words, Boyi realized something was wrong, quickly dropped the broom, and forcibly covered Jianzhong's mouth from behind. "It's nothing, we were just joking. Let's all go! It's more important to make money quickly."
Jianzhong whimpered and struggled in his arms. Only after everyone left did Boyi let go of Jianzhong's hands.
As soon as Boyi let go, Jianzhong immediately spat, "You made my mouth full of dust, what? I'm in the wrong, I don't dare to ask others to judge."
Boyi covered Jianzhong's mouth with a work gloves, and the brick dust accumulated on the gloves left a gray handprint on his mouth.
This is called being cautious before you act. No matter how arrogant and domineering Jianzhong was in front of him, he didn't dare to fight him again. Anyway, Jianzhong hadn't made any move yet, so he just had to take it one step at a time! He would just have to be more careful and be on guard against him in the future.
"Didn't I tell you I was joking? Why are you taking it so seriously? Okay, I won't say any more. Let's go move bricks." Boyi pretended to be friendly and said, putting his arm around Jianzhong's shoulder.
A storm that hadn't even started yet calmed down just like that.
Imaginations are rich, but reality is harsh. Reality was far from what Shumei had imagined. Work in the brick factory was truly grueling. Even with her protective gloves, her fingers still rubbed raw, with blisters larger than soybeans forming on all ten of her fingers.
As the work continued, the blisters were worn out one by one. Over time, the blood and yellow water that flowed out adhered firmly to the gloves. When the child on her back cried out in hunger, Shumei was about to remove the gloves to feed him when she discovered the problem. But for the sake of the child on her back, she had no choice but to grit her teeth and forcibly pull the gloves off.
In an instant, blood gushed out from between her fingers. As the saying goes, the fingers are connected to the heart. The pain was so severe that tears welled up in Shumei's eyes.
She found a shaded place, put the child down on her back, sat on the ground with her back against the brick pile, lifted her shirt and fed the child.
