"Look how badly you're choking. Come, drink some water and relax."
The woman kindly handed Shumei a bottle of water. Although Shumei had never traveled far, the farthest she had been was to this town, she still had a minimum of vigilance and politely declined.
"Thank you, sister. It's really not necessary."
"Take it! Why are you being so polite? We're all women, we know how difficult it is for women. Are you here looking for something to do?"
Shumei reluctantly accepted the water she handed over, her face filled with shock. How did she know I was looking for trouble? Could she be a scammer? But then she thought, I'm penniless, so I don't have anything to cheat her of.
She was about to get up and leave, but after thinking this, she gave up the idea of leaving.
"How did Big Sister know I was looking for trouble?"
"I'm an experienced person. My husband passed away early, so I had to find a job to support my children. You look exactly like me when I first came out. Your face is full of grievance and helplessness. Seeing you is like seeing myself back then."
"So, sister, have you found something to do?"
"I found it. Look, this is my job. I buy groceries and cook, and the salary is no less than that of a laborer."
The woman patted the basket on her shoulder and boasted about her work proudly.
"Is it such a good thing?" Shumei asked in a skeptical tone.
"That's not a good thing. Things are different now! Rich people just like to use their money to buy food and clothes. My situation is nothing. I have a good sister from the same village. Her boss is a generous man. As long as she does a good job, he always rewards her with money every now and then. Not to mention the salary, the extra money from the boss is enough for her to support her whole family."
Shumei was so eager to find a job like this that she couldn't wait to do it. It wasn't that she was lazy, but if she could really make money like this, she might be able to save enough for Jizong's surgery.
"Where can I find such a job? Is this what they call a babysitter?"
"Yes, yes, it's a nanny. If you trust me, I can introduce you to one. The neighbors next door to the family I'm helping now are looking for someone. They even asked me a while ago if I could introduce them to someone diligent and capable!"
"Okay! Okay!"
Shumei agreed without hesitation and followed the strange woman to meet the customer.
This was a remote old courtyard. From the outside, it didn't look like the wealthy family the woman had described. Shumei looked around, still feeling a little scared. She didn't follow the woman too closely. When she saw the woman stop, she also stopped and stood at a distance in the courtyard.
The woman knocked on a door and was answered by a man in a suit and tie, wearing glasses, who looked like an intellectual. His appearance made Shumei relax her guard.
"Brother, I have brought you the person you wanted. Do you think you are satisfied?"
The man adjusted his glasses and looked at Shumei behind the woman. He looked her up and down. Then he nodded with satisfaction and whispered to the woman, "This is really good."
"Not bad, 30 yuan a month, you live and eat at my house, I cook three meals a day, and I clean the house. As for clothes, you don't have to wash them by hand, you use the washing machine. If you think you can do it, you can come to work tomorrow."
With such good treatment, how could Shumei refuse? She nodded excitedly and agreed without hesitation.
"Would you like to come in and sit for a while, have a glass of water, and get familiar with the environment?"
Seeing Shumei standing far away in the yard, the man suggested.
Shumei hesitated for a moment before following the two men into the house. The woman slammed the door shut behind her. In this unfamiliar environment, the slamming of the door made Shumei feel like a frightened bird, her heart still trembling with fear. The furnishings in the house were simple, and at the man's gesture, Shumei sat on the sofa in the living room.
Soon, the man brought a glass of water in a teacup, handed it to Shumei and said, "Come, have a drink of water!"
"Thank you!" Shumei took the cup and politely expressed her gratitude like a cultured person.
Shumei drank the water in the cup in one gulp, and soon she felt dizzy. In her confusion, she seemed to see the ferocious smiles of the man and woman. They stared at her intently, and the kind expressions they had just had disappeared.
As the sky was getting dark, Ji Zong waited for a long time but Shu Mei didn't come back. He was extremely anxious.
In order to wait for Shumei to come back and cook dinner, Wu Ju and his wife dozed off and snored on the chairs in the main hall. If it weren't for Ji Zong's loud shouting, the old couple would probably have slept until dawn.
"Mother, mother, isn't Shumei back yet?"
The two of them woke up suddenly. Wu Ju looked at the empty table and the sleeping child in the cradle and complained, "I really don't know how this mother can be. The child hasn't had a single sip of milk all day, and yet she doesn't come home in the middle of the night. If your grandma hadn't saved some rice and made some rice porridge for you, you would have starved to death!"
"Dad, Mom, go look for her! Shumei wouldn't be out so late. Something must have happened to her."
"What are you looking for? She's such a grown-up, how could she get lost?"
Perhaps it was because the two of them were speaking too loudly that they woke up the sleeping child, who started crying loudly as soon as he woke up.
"Dead man, didn't you see your granddaughter crying?"
Wu Ju scolded Zhang Binglin, and Zhang Binglin stood up and held the child in his arms to coax him.
