Chapter 44: Escape from Danger

The rest of the villagers chimed in, and the village chief finally agreed to let Boyi into the village. As soon as the village chief agreed, Boyi was dragged home by the person who had just come out to plead for him.

Boyi made chairs for the villagers while trying to find out Shumei's whereabouts in a roundabout way.

But the villagers kept their affairs secret and were unwilling to reveal anything to a stranger like him. So he stayed in the village for half a month.

Shumei's injuries gradually healed, and she was constantly thinking of ways to escape. However, ever since her last escape, the Zhuo family had always been wary of her. Whenever she was alone, they would lock the door and tie her hands and feet, fearing she would escape again.

Although this was not her day, Shumei could at least protect herself and wait for an opportunity to escape. This was a great blessing for her, and she dared not ask for anything else.

One day at breakfast time, the old woman asked her silly son, "Er Wa, did you sleep with your beautiful wife?"

"Sleep, sleep soundly." The fool grabbed the pancake on the table with his hands, ate it greedily, and returned with a smug smile.

"Then tell me, how do you guys sleep?"

The fool grabbed the cake in his hand, stood up from the chair, sat on the ground, lay flat on the ground, and closed his eyes as if sleeping.

"Erwa, get up quickly. The ground is cold. What are you doing lying there?"

The old woman put down what she was holding and quickly helped her son up from the ground.

"Didn't you ask me how I slept with my beautiful wife? Now you're blaming me again!"

The fool reluctantly got up from the ground, muttering complaints about the old woman. He then sat back in his chair and ate his breakfast in big mouthfuls.

"You slept with your beautiful wife like this? Didn't you do anything else?"

"Sleeping, isn't that what it's all about?"

Seeing the fool's innocent expression, the old woman's face showed a strange expression. She was thinking in her heart how to confirm whether her son was carrying on the Zhuo family's bloodline.

Just as she was thinking, Zhuo Er brought Boyi in. Looking at Boyi carrying the child, the old woman looked at Zhuo Er with suspicion.

"Mom, this is a chair maker. Many people in the village make chairs. They are really good."

The old woman said "oh" and continued to think deeply.

Zhuoer took Boyi to a corner of the yard where fresh bamboo had been prepared for him. Boyi started working immediately.

Boyi was puzzled. He had searched the entire village, but why was there no sign of Shumei? Could it be that Shumei had not been sold to this village? Could it be that Shumei had already… Boyi became more and more frightened and dared not think any further.

"The same goes for the S4 police. They promised to come and rescue us as soon as possible, but it's been over half a month and there's still no sign of them."

Boyi complained softly while sawing the bamboo pole in his hand.

In fact, he didn't know that the police had already come, but they couldn't enter the village at all. They were stopped at the entrance of the village. In order to avoid causing a riot, the police could only turn a blind eye. Without solid evidence, they dared not force their way into the village.

The person responsible for the trafficking has not been arrested yet. There are no strong witnesses, and the higher-ups dare not send anyone down easily. The three or five policemen in the town are not enough to deal with these tough villagers.

These villagers, after years of dealing with tigers and leopards in the mountains, have long since honed their skills. Without the army's advance, or their willingness to let people in, it would be difficult for outsiders to enter the village.

That night, the old woman stood by the window and peeked in. She had to find out whether her stupid son could have sex with a man.

The result disappointed her. Shumei's eyes were still wide open, but her silly son was already snoring. She was so angry that she pushed the door open and woke up her silly son.

Seeing her break in, Shumei suddenly sat up from the kang, leaned against the wall and tightly grasped the quilt in her hand. Here, Shumei always kept a high level of vigilance, like a frightened bird, and would tremble with fear at the slightest noise.

The old woman pinched her son's ear, glared at Shumei, and said angrily, "You good-for-nothing! I spent so much money to buy you a new daughter-in-law, and you're wasting her like this. Go, call your brother and let him teach you how to carry on the Zhuo family's lineage."

Shumei just couldn't understand why this old woman had such a high status and could be the head of the family in this place where men were superior to women.

In fact, it was not because of her high status, but because her husband had passed away and she was the elder in the family, she naturally became the head of the family. No matter how unsympathetic they were, the filial piety would not change no matter where they went. As long as her son was filial to her, she would obey him in everything.

"oh!"

The fool reluctantly left the house. Shumei was already terrified. She stared at the old woman intently, wondering how she could not even defeat an old woman. She glanced at the wide-open door and decided that instead of waiting to die, she might as well give it another try.

But just as she was about to get off the kang, the scene of being beaten last time came back to her mind. She hesitated again as she was about to fall back onto the kang.

Just as she was hesitating, the fool came back with Zhuo Er.

"Zhuo'er, teach Erwa a lesson. He's been here for half a month, and he can't do anything but sleep with his head covered."

The old woman said this and walked out, closing the door behind her.

Boyi, who was staying at Zhuo's house, lived next door to Shumei. He was sound asleep when he was woken by the old woman's scolding. Since he couldn't fall asleep anyway, he lay on the kang and listened attentively to see what was going on.
