Chapter 49: Old Aunt

It is said that daughters resemble their mothers, and it is true. Zhang Xiaoqin has completely inherited Wu Ju's calculating and petty character, and she is even better than her mother.

"Oh my! You've thought it through. If it weren't for you, I, your mother, would really be led by the nose by that jinx." Wu Ju was completely convinced by Zhang Xiaoqin's words.

"Don't worry, mother! I'm here and won't watch you suffer. From now on, you have to be smarter and don't act like a spoiled child. You have to be nice to her on the surface. This free labor should not be wasted. You have to make her be nice to you willingly. If there is anything you can't handle, come to me. I'll be the bad guy and you play the good guy." Zhang Xiaoqin was full of confidence. She patted her chest to assure Wu Ju and gave Wu Ju some advice and suggestions.

Wu Ju felt relieved after hearing what Zhang Xiaoqin said. She sighed in her heart, saying that it is true that a daughter is like a mother's warm and cozy little cotton-padded jacket. This daughter has not been raised in vain.

"Okay, my girl, you've been a great hero today. Mommy will go make you some twice-cooked pork." Wu Ju excitedly jumped out of bed, put on her shoes and prepared to go to the kitchen.

"Oh, by the way, mother, hide all the food and complain as much as possible in front of her, so that she can work hard to make money to support you."

Wu Ju agreed, and as soon as she left the room, she quickly put the rice, flour and other things into her room and hid them safely, then went to the kitchen to prepare the twice-cooked pork.

In the guest room, Shumei was cleaning.

It was called a guest room, but it was actually just a storage room. Atop a wooden bed, dust was so thick it had spiders already made their home. Piled around it were baskets, hoes, shoulder poles, and urine buckets. The entire room was filled with a foul, musty odor; it didn't feel like a human residence. No wonder Zhang Xiaoqin had insisted on occupying Shumei and the others' room.

"Isn't this a place for people to live? Sister Shumei, why do you just swallow your anger like this?" Xiong Qianqian stood behind the door holding the child, looking at Shumei who was wiping with a towel, and complained indignantly.

"Qianqian! Life is not like going to the battlefield. If we have to fight to win or lose, then life will be unbearable. Forgive others when you can, and take a step back. The sky will be wider. Think about it! Compared to the days when we were sold, I feel that these are nothing."

Shumei was busy with her work while speaking to Xiong Qianqian meaningfully. At this point, every detail of being sold came back to her mind, as if it happened just yesterday.

"Sister Shumei, don't worry, they can't bully you with me here."

Shumei didn't respond, but smiled at Xiong Qianqian and continued to make the bed.

Humph! You're fighting me! Who am I, Xiong Qianqian? I'm the fearless Sister Qian. I'm not afraid of those shrewd and powerful ladies in the city, so why should I be afraid of you, women who have never seen the world?

Xiong Qianqian used to work at a nightclub, where she had frequent physical contact with men who came to spend money for fun. Qianqian was young, beautiful, and a tease. To get the upper hand, many of the men were lavish and never skimped on spending money on her.

Over time, it was inevitable that some so-called "concubines" would come to the nightclub to cause trouble. As a result, Xiong Qianqian naturally developed the ability to deal with any future troubles.

Shumei pounded her waist, put her hands on her hips and looked at the fruits of her labor, saying with satisfaction, "Great! It's done. Qianqian! Take Xiao Shuangning to bed and rest for a while. You haven't eaten all day. I'll go make you something to eat."

"Okay, go ahead, sister! I'll take good care of the child."

The house that was previously untraceable now looks somewhat presentable after Shumei cleaned it up.

Xiong Qianqian had been traveling all day and was indeed a little tired, so she went straight to bed.

Shumei carried a basin of black dirty water and a towel out of the room. As soon as she left, she could smell the aroma of twice-cooked pork wafting from the kitchen. In the main room, a family of four was enjoying a delicious meal.

Seeing Shumei come into the room, Zhang Binglin quickly invited Shumei over to eat something.

When Wu Ju heard this, she stepped heavily on Zhang Binglin's foot and glared at him angrily.

"Shumei! Mother's words were a bit harsh before. It's truly painful for an elderly person to send off a young one! Please bear with it and don't blame Mother."

Wu Ju stood up from her stool, walked over to Shumei, and tightly grasped her hand. Inspired by her daughter, she wanted a long-term meal ticket, and her attitude towards Shumei suddenly changed 180 degrees.

Shumei was a little uncomfortable with Wu Ju's sudden change of attitude.

"It's okay, mother. Life is full of ups and downs."

"You know, your father and I are old now, and we don't have any financial resources. We have to eat one meal a day and have to borrow even the children's food from Fu Jun's family. The meat and rice today were brought by your sister from her husband's family. Now that Ji Zong is gone, I really don't know how I will get by in the future."

She understood Wu Ju's hidden meaning, which was that she was afraid that she would abandon them and was unwilling to provide for them in their old age.

These were Ji Zong's parents, her parents too. They had raised Ji Zong. Without them, there would be no Ji Zong, and without Ji Zong, there would be no family. Even for Ji Zong's sake, she wasn't going to ignore them. Besides, supporting the elders was a natural duty for the younger generation.

"Don't worry, mother. I'll go out and find a job tomorrow. As long as I have food to eat, I won't let you guys have soup."

"Okay, okay, it's a blessing from Ji Zong's past life that he can marry you. Haven't eaten yet? Come, come and have some. Even though it's a little, let's share it and make do with it!"
