Chapter 54: There is always a way out

She flashed the money Wu Ju had just given her in front of Jiang Fu's eyes. "Did you see that? It's from my mother. I'm going to give you credit for your contribution today. If you hadn't come to my house and made a scene, I really wouldn't know how to start a conversation. This is what they call a wife following her husband's lead, achieving twice the result with half the effort. Also, my precious son is really a good person. He never got sick earlier or later, but he got sick at this critical moment. He's really my lucky star."

Jiang Fu didn't say anything and continued to walk forward dejectedly. Zhang Xiaoqin followed behind him, still muttering to herself.

Xiong Qianqian's small barber shop is doing very well. Besides half of her luck, her skills are also a big part of it.

But she was the only one in the shop, and customers didn't have to ask her to cut their hair. Some customers, seeing that she was busy, didn't want to wait, so they left and chose to go to other shops. At the end of the day, several customers were lost.

Qianqian was anxious and worried about this matter. She watched the money flow out without being able to do anything. She should have been happy about the booming business, but instead, a trace of sadness appeared on her face.

After finding something to do for the day, Shumei sat under the town's banyan tree, patting her stiff legs. From the small cloth bag she carried on her back, she pulled out the roasted sweet potatoes she had prepared that morning. The potatoes were already cold and lifeless, so she peeled them and devoured them bite by bite.

Seeing that it was getting late, she decided to finish eating the sweet potatoes and then go find something to do.

Apart from state-owned enterprises, there are only a few mom-and-pop shops in town, and it's really hard to find a job. Small shops don't hire people, and state-owned enterprises have high barriers to entry, so I can't get in.

The child on her back was quite well behaved. He just fed a few times and then lay quietly on Shumei's back without crying or making a fuss.

After finishing her sweet potatoes, Shumei took another weary step toward an old residential complex. At the gate, she ran into an acquaintance from her mother's village, a forty-year-old woman. Given her seniority, Shumei had to call her "cousin." She was carrying a vegetable basket and holding a child, about four or five years old.

"Huh? Isn't this Shumei?"

The woman came towards Shumei and greeted her in a surprised tone.

Shumei was originally dejected, but when she heard someone calling her, she raised her head, "Aunt!"

"What are you doing? You look as dejected as an eggplant hit by frost."

"Well, now is the time when there is a shortage of food, and I want to find something to do to supplement the family income."

Shumei spoke with a casual air, not wanting to share her misfortunes with outsiders. Isn't there a saying that goes, "Don't air your dirty laundry in public?" Whether you're hot or cold, good or bad, it's up to you to know. Even if you complain to others, they won't let you eat from their pot.

"Hey! Shumei! I've heard your mother tell you about your situation. You're such a poor kid. I'm a nanny at this little girl's house, and the pay is pretty good. And it just so happens that the lady of this house said her cousin's family is looking for a reliable man. So, since we've met, how about I introduce you? Is that okay with you?"

The woman glanced at the child in her hand and spoke to Shumei earnestly.

"real?"

Shumei asked excitedly if there was anyone who had been sold before, but soon a trace of doubt crossed her face.

"Of course it's true. Just because you call me cousin, I can't ignore it. Come on, I'll take you to see my wife now."

As the woman spoke, she walked into the community alone. Shumei was still a little hesitant, but she kept moving her feet slowly forward.

This is my cousin's aunt, someone I know well. She wouldn't lie to me. There are so many liars out there. Don't scare yourself. Shumei tried hard to persuade herself, quickening her pace to catch up.

The two of them came to a house together, and the woman took out the key and opened the door.

As soon as I opened the door, the first thing that caught my eye was a spacious living room. A woman no more than three years old, with a hollow curling iron on her head, was sitting on the sofa with her legs crossed, watching TV.

"Shumei, wait at the door for a moment. I'll go in and tell Madam."

Shumei was about to step in, but was stopped by her aunt. After hearing what her aunt said, she quickly retracted her foot.

Why are people in this city so particular? They even have to report things to the authorities. They are so arrogant.

"oh!"

Shumei agreed and stood at the door waiting stupidly. Her aunt slammed the door shut.

The child broke free from his aunt's hand and jumped into the woman's arms like a rabbit.

"Mother!"

"Baby, are you back? Did you sell the goldfish?"

"No, the goldfish shop is closed."

The little girl pouted and returned to the woman unhappily.

"It's okay, go again tomorrow and ask Grandma Su to buy you a few more."

"Okay! Okay! Thank you, Mom!"

The little girl clapped her hands and danced in applause, then leaned over to kiss the woman on the cheek. The woman smiled with satisfaction and lowered her head to kiss the little girl on the head.

Seeing the mother and daughter chatting so happily, the aunt didn't dare to interrupt them and had to stand by and wait.

Seeing that the two of them had almost finished chatting, she finally spoke: "Madam, I have brought the person you asked me to find for you. He is waiting at the door!"

"Oh! Let her come in and let me see."

“Hey!”

My cousin's wife responded with a smile, then went out and led Shumei into the house.

Shumei followed her, head lowered like a child who had made a mistake. After all, this was her first time visiting such a wealthy family. The clean floor and the furniture she had never seen before made her feel strongly unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

"Madam, her name is Kang Shumei. She is a distant relative of ours. I have watched her grow up. She is smart, hardworking, and efficient at work. I am sure she will not let you down."
