Looking at Boyi's serious expression, Shumei really didn't know what to say. She felt lucky to have such a friend.
Boyi took some money out of his pocket and stuffed it into Shumei's hand. Shumei repeatedly refused, saying that she hadn't paid back the money she owed before, so how could she have the nerve to continue paying.
"Shumei, take it. I just want you to remember that even though Ji Zong is gone, I am still here. From now on, your affairs are my affairs. If you have any difficulties, just tell me. What Ji Zong can do, I can do too. Just like when we saved you when we were little, I will never be absent from your affairs..."
Boyi looked at Shumei with affection. He knew that Shumei was so devoted to Jizong because of that childhood conversation. He really wanted to tell Shumei, but when the words came to his lips, he couldn't say them.
Ji Zong was his good brother, how could he do such a thing as stabbing his brother in the back after his death? He even felt that he looked down on himself and slapped himself hard.
Shumei was stunned by his unusual behavior.
"Anyway, I just want you to be well and I'll always be there to protect you. Okay, take the money, I'm leaving."
After Boyi finished speaking, he got on his bike and headed back.
"Go slow. If you have time, go visit Qianqian often. She's a poor person, so help her as much as you can. I can't be away from here for a while, so please, Boyi."
"Don't worry! I will take your instructions to heart."
By the time Shumei finished speaking, Boyi had already ridden a long way away, but he still heard Shumei's instructions, and he responded to Shumei loudly at the top of his lungs.
Shumei couldn't help but take Boyi's words and his strange behavior to heart. She pondered Boyi's words while walking towards the courtyard.
The old aunt took her to familiarize herself with the home environment. She began to get busy in this unfamiliar home, doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, feeding, and changing diapers...
The old aunt and her husband were doing what they loved and watching Shumei busy herself inside and outside the house.
The old couple only had two sons and no daughters. The old aunt had always dreamed of having a daughter, and when she saw that Shumei was both pretty and efficient, she was extremely satisfied with her.
Shumei was quite satisfied with her job; the pay was good and the work wasn't too strenuous. Her aunt, worried she'd tire herself out, would always come to her aid. She was eager for her probationary period to pass quickly so she could settle down in this hard-earned job.
Shumei's good nature quickly made her a good friend among her neighbors. She would buy fruits and vegetables for them every day, and everyone was happy to let her do the shopping because everything she bought was good quality and affordable.
However, this "good quality and low price" was not easy to come by, and it was the result of Shumei's hard work.
Look, Shumei is going to the vegetable market to buy vegetables with a basket on her shoulder and her child on her back.
When neighbor Liu saw Shumei leaving through her kitchen window, she quickly put down the dishes she was washing, wiped her wet hands on her apron, and chased after her with her vegetable basket.
"Shumei, are you going to buy groceries?"
"Yes! Sister Liu, do you want me to bring something back for you today?"
"Oh! Sister Shumei really understands me. One pound of celery, half a pound of pork belly, two pounds of tomatoes, eggs... Oh! I still have eggs at home, and I'll buy some garlic."
As Sister Liu spoke, she handed Shumei the basket and money. Her face was filled with a friendly smile, and she didn't seem embarrassed at all, as if she took it for granted.
"Okay, then Sister Liu, you go ahead and do your work. I'll go."
Sister Liu watched Shumei walk out of the yard. She also glanced at the other two families, wondering why they didn't come to join in the fun today. Then she turned around proudly and went back to her room.
The old lady standing at her door had seen the scene unfold. She wasn't surprised, having seen this sort of scene more than once. Today, it was just Sister Liu; the other two families probably had leftovers, so they didn't bother Shumei.
She shook her head and went back into the house, muttering to herself, "This girl is good in every way, but she's too sincere."
The old lady's youngest son, Wencai, sat cross-legged on the sofa, eating some unknown nuts on the table and complaining to the old lady, "Is this my family's nanny or a public nanny? I pay for her and they use her for free."
"You useless thing, you've almost turned yourself into a pig, eating and sleeping all the time. The girl didn't ask my family for any extra money, so why should it bother you?"
Looking at her son who was lazy and ate nothing but food and never left his aunt at home every day, the old aunt was furious. She picked up the chicken feather blanket on the table and pointed at Wencai and scolded him.
