Just as she picked up the chopsticks to eat, she remembered Wencai who had not eaten yet, so she found a clean bowl, divided half of the rice into it, and peeled Wencai's favorite pig intestines into the bowl.
While the old aunt was not paying attention, he sneaked into Wencai's room.
Wencai was sleeping on the bed with his head covered. Shumei lowered her voice and called him softly, "Wencai, are you hungry? The food is still hot, get up and eat something!"
Wencai's stomach was growling with hunger. He had thought the old lady was just being hard-hearted and would, after dinner, beg him for more, just like before, fearing he would go hungry. He had never imagined that the person who would bring him the meal would be his nanny.
He threw back the quilt, sat up from the bed, and without lowering his voice, asked in a normal or even slightly above-normal voice: "My mom asked you to come, right?"
"Shh! Wencai, keep your voice down. Aunt and the others are taking a nap! Be careful not to wake them up."
Shumei put her finger to her mouth as if to speak more quietly, then lowered her head and spoke in a low voice.
When Wencai heard what she said, he looked at her in surprise and an angry expression on his face.
"What did you say? I'm starving here, and these two are actually taking a nap peacefully."
"You should also be more understanding of your aunt. She is doing this for your own good."
"Who are you? You're just a babysitter in my family. Be careful with your words. It's not your turn to tell me what to do."
Wencai sneered sarcastically, his anger still surging and he couldn't find a place to vent it! He stretched his neck, his eyes wide open, and scolded Shumei.
Since he said so, Shumei didn't know what to say. She could only put the bowl on his bedside table in silence and prepare to walk out the door.
Smelling the aroma of the food, Wencai's stomach started growling again. He touched his stomach, looked at the bowl of rice on the bedside table, and kept swallowing his saliva.
"Since you're so kind, I'll just eat a little."
He picked up the bowl and began to eat voraciously. After taking a bite, he felt that the taste was a little wrong, so he immediately spat the rice in his mouth back into the bowl, and threw the bowl and chopsticks at Shumei with a bang.
"What the hell are these things you gave me to eat? They even have garlic sprouts in them, which I hate the most. How dare you give me leftovers to eat?"
The bowl was smashed into pieces and the food spilled all over the floor.
As the saying goes, one should be grateful for what one has received, and one should be soft-hearted when receiving something. No matter how unreasonable Wencai was, she could only grit her teeth and swallow her anger, keeping her grievances to herself. She was afraid that she would make a mistake and lose her job.
Shumei turned around and looked at Wencai, who had a ferocious face. She didn't expect that her kindness would be taken as an insult.
"What are you looking at? Clean it up quickly."
Shumei had no choice but to bend down and clean up the debris and food on the ground with her bare hands.
They say three women make a play, and this Wencai alone can probably carry the whole Yitai drama. I've seen hypocritical women, but I've never seen such a hypocritical man.
It is such a waste of gifts from nature. Such good food is wasted like this. Many people want to eat but can’t. They really don’t know how to appreciate their blessings. Shumei kept feeling sorry for the wasted rice.
The old lady in the next room heard the noise and got up from the bed to check. As soon as she walked out the door, she saw Shumei passing by with the broken pieces of the bowl in her hands.
"Shumei, what's going on?"
Hearing the old lady's voice, Wencai got anxious, jumped out of bed in his socks, and ran to the two of them. He was about to put all the blame on Shumei, but Shumei spoke before him.
"Auntie, I accidentally dropped a bowl and broke it. I'll buy a new one tomorrow when I go grocery shopping."
Shumei explained to the old aunt with embarrassment, as if she had really made a mistake.
Hearing Shumei actually take all the blame on herself, Wencai swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue, looking a little embarrassed.
"It's okay, it's just a bowl. Even horses stumble sometimes! We're not saints, so everyone gets careless sometimes and hurts themselves, right?"
The old aunt looked at Shumei's hand with concern. In the old aunt, Shumei felt the warmth of a mother's love. The old aunt in front of her was such a good mother! If I could have a mother like this, how wonderful it would be. Shumei didn't understand. Why didn't Wencai understand? Why didn't he know how to cherish her?
"Auntie, I'm fine. Thank you for your concern. You are a good mother."
For someone who lacks maternal love, such care is simply a luxury. Shumei was so moved that her eyes were wet.
What a flatterer, good mother? This is a roundabout way of saying that I am not a good son. I really can't tell. He is usually honest, but his mind is full of twists and turns.
After Shumei left, the old lady was about to turn around and go back to the house. Wencai came to his senses and quickly called her back.
"Mom, can you really bear to watch your precious son starve?"
"If you want to avoid starvation, do as I say."
"Mother……"
The old aunt sternly said something and turned back to the house. Although the old aunt said it firmly, her heart was as painful as a needle. She was worried that her son would starve, and at the same time she was worried that he would not be able to turn back.
"Humph! Isn't it just living expenses? How can it embarrass me, the famous Li Wencai?"
He went back to the house and took a quick look. Apart from the wardrobe and the bed, he really couldn't find anything valuable in the house. The valuable refrigerator, washing machine, and sewing machine were not in his room. Besides, they were such a big target that it would be difficult for him to get them out.
