Chapter 64: Good Intentions

"Mother, you're worried...Okay, I know what to do. I won't let my brother die with regrets. After the one-year mourning period, I'll bring people here."

Zhang Binglin and Shumei pushed Wencai with difficulty, step by step towards the town.

On the way, they met Boyi, who was returning from work. Without asking any questions, Boyi took over Zhang Binglin's rope and helped them pull Wencai into town. It took them more than four hours to reach the town hospital.

Fortunately, Shumei had 50 yuan left from her salary, otherwise she wouldn't know where to get the registration fee and medical expenses.

She ran back and forth non-stop, up and down the stairs, to the registration office and the medicine pick-up place.

Wencai was given an IV drip and his fever was finally reduced after physical cooling, but he remained unconscious.

It is also because Wencai is too lazy and lacks exercise, so his physical condition is weak and a small cold is like a serious illness.

As the sky darkened, Shumei finally remembered her aunt. Wencai was so ill, she should have informed her aunt immediately.

"Dad, please keep an eye on him for me. I'll go and notify his mother."

Shumei was busy running around, and Zhang Binglin stayed to help look after Wencai.

Boyi followed Shumei out of the house and followed her all the way to the public phone in the hospital. He stood quietly beside her and listened to her call her aunt. The call was quickly connected, and Shumei was nervous and guilty.

"Hello! Auntie, Wencai has a cold and is in the town hospital. He is..."

"What? I'll be right there."

“Beep, beep…”

When she heard that Wencai was ill, the old lady didn't bother to listen to Shumei's explanation. She said something anxiously and hung up the phone. The only sound left on the phone was the beeping sound. Shumei had no choice but to hang up the phone.

This old lady! She usually seems quite harsh towards Wencai, beating and scolding him at the slightest provocation, but when she hears he's sick, she's completely distraught, like an ant on the hot pan. She truly has a sharp tongue but a soft heart, a common trait among most mothers.

"Old man! Wencai is sick. Please take care of Xiao Shitou. I'm going to the hospital."

The old lady packed up hurriedly and told Li Yushu about the little stone.

"Is she sick? Didn't Wencai send Shumei back to the village? How did she end up in the hospital?"

"Ouch! I was in a hurry and forgot to ask. Let's go over there first!"

"You, you! You're just tough on the outside but soft on the inside! As soon as you heard something was wrong with the children, you got so anxious that you lost your mind. Is Wencai seriously ill?"

The old lady thought that Wencai would have to spend money to stay in the hospital, so she specially prepared some cash. She counted the money while listening to Li Yushu talk.

"Ouch! I forgot to ask whether it's serious or not. Why do you have so many questions? Just take good care of Little Stone. Remember! When Little Stone wakes up, prepare 120ml of milk and feed him. I'm leaving now."

As the old lady spoke, she ran out of the house anxiously.

In the town hospital, outside Wencai's ward, Shumei and Boyi sat on the long wooden chairs outside the door.

Boyi held the food he had just bought from the hospital and handed it to Shumei.

"Shumei, please eat something!"

"Boyi, I'm not hungry. You and Dad can eat!"

Shumei had never seen a person with a cold sleep for so long. She was a little worried about Wencai. Wencai was originally asked by her aunt to take her home, but now he had ended up like this. It was all her fault. She really didn't know how to explain to her aunt.

"We've all eaten, you can have some!"

Shumei looked at Boyi, whose eyes were full of pleading, then looked at the thing in his hand and reluctantly took it.

Seeing that Shumei finally agreed to eat, Boyi breathed a sigh of relief.

"Who is this person? It seems that you care about him a lot."

Seeing Shumei so worried about the man in the ward, and seeing how Shumei took care of him meticulously, Boyi felt a little sour in his heart and couldn't help asking Shumei.

"He's the youngest son of the family I work for as a nanny. He was supposed to take me back to the village today, but the motorcycle accidentally fell into the river and ended up like this."

He was just a nanny, but he was so kind as to send Shumei home. Boyi felt a sense of threat he had never felt before.

It's only been a month, shouldn't it? It can't be what I think. Shumei is just feeling guilty. As for that man, he's so young and has such good conditions, it's impossible for him to fall in love with Shumei so quickly. But...but Shumei is so good, and he's so close to her, so it's not impossible. No, that's not the case. I'm just imagining things.

Boyi kept denying his inner thoughts and looked at Shumei with helpless eyes.

"Boyi, it's been dark for a long time now, and you still have to go to work tomorrow, so you should go home first! And please help me send my father back."

"Let's wait for someone from his family to come. You're alone and you might not be able to find anyone to help you if you need one."

"It's okay. I'm fine on my own."

Shumei looked relieved, wanting to prove to Boyi that she could handle it on her own. Seeing that Boyi was about to persuade her further, she immediately changed the subject.

"Oh, by the way, I have something else to ask of you?"

"Tell me! What's the matter?"

"There's a motorcycle in my yard. I think it's flooded and won't start. Could you please take some time to help me take a look? I really don't understand this motorcycle. I'm really sorry to bother you every time."

Shumei looked embarrassed and asked Boyi to help repair Wencai's motorcycle.

"Why are you being so polite to me? It doesn't matter whether you ask for help or not. Don't worry, I'll take care of it... Well, let me keep that one..." Boyi readily agreed to Shumei's request.
