"Shumei, Meimei, it's not easy to be a widow. Sooner or later you'll have to find someone to entertain you and relieve your loneliness. I'm strong and healthy, and I'm sure I can satisfy you."
As the saying goes: There's always trouble around a widow! But Ji Zong is still alive and well, and these people are just getting more and more aggressive. Damn it, what do they think of me, a prostitute from the red-light district?
"Get out of here!"
Shumei no longer cared about the feelings of her coworkers and roared at him.
"Hey! My little wife is quite hot."
Jianzhong ignored Shumei's rant and, even more aggressively, launched his calloused hand towards Shumei's chest. In this critical moment, Boyi once again came to the rescue, grabbing Jianzhong's wrist and forcibly prying his hands away. With a single thrust, he pushed Jianzhong and the car to the ground.
"Shumei, get in the car!"
Boyi got on his bicycle and spoke to Shumei in a clear and concise manner. Shumei hurriedly jumped on the back seat of Boyi's bicycle. Boyi stepped on the pedals and the bicycle sped away.
"Tang Boyi, you bastard, if you have the guts, don't run away! You've ruined my good thing again, Ouch! My butt." Jianzhong cursed while picking up his bicycle with a heartache. He checked the bicycle inside and out, front and back, for fear that the bicycle would be broken.
Shumei sat on the back of Boyi's bicycle, looking at his familiar back, and whispered, "Boyi, thank you!"
"Why are you always so polite to me? Ji Zong is not here, so I will be the one protecting you from now on."
After Boyi finished speaking, they both fell silent. Only the rustling of bicycle wheels could be heard. No one could guess what either of them was thinking at the moment. Their expressions were surprisingly calm, without the slightest ripple.
After a long time, Boyi spoke and broke the existing silence.
"Shumei, look at this brick factory, it's full of stinky men. It's really not suitable for you to stay here. Why don't you just not come here?"
"It's okay, what are you afraid of? They can't hurt me."
"But the dust in the factory is so thick. We adults don't mind it, but little Shuangning might not be able to stand it. Don't let it harm the child."
Shumei was silent for a moment, then responded, "I'm going to go home tonight and talk to my mother-in-law to see if she can help take care of it. There's always a solution to everything."
Boyi fell silent, pedaling silently. As they neared the village entrance, Shumei felt a surge of anxiety. Her reputation didn't matter; it wasn't great anyway, already notorious. She was worried about Boyi. After all, little Youchen would have to start a family, and ruining Boyi's reputation would be like harming the child. She pondered, wanting to ask Boyi to put her down so she could walk back to the village.
In the face of public criticism, the saying "if you are upright, you have nothing to fear" is of no use at all.
Shumei was thinking about it when her bicycle suddenly stopped and said, "Shumei, let's walk into the village! Remember to wait for me after work, I will take you back."
"Um!"
Shumei jumped off her bicycle and nodded in response to Boyi. After receiving Shumei's response, Boyi rode his bicycle alone towards the village.
Boyi was worried that rumors would hurt Shumei, so he left her at the village entrance. Although Shumei didn't understand why Boyi did this, she could feel in her heart that Boyi was doing it for her own good and for her own benefit.
Shumei dragged her tired body and carried Shuangning back home.
The house was brightly lit, but sadly, there was no sign of food. Shumei, already exhausted, laid her child next to the sleeping Jizong and began to frantically prepare dinner.
She listened to Boyi's words, soaked the gauze on her fingers with water, and then took them off one by one. Even so, her fingers still hurt when they touched the pots and pans. She endured the pain and made dinner with difficulty. After putting the food and dishes on the table, she shouted to her parents-in-law who were hiding in the house.
"Dad, Mom, the meal is ready, come out and eat while it's hot."
Wu Ju and Zhang Binglin were incredibly shameless. Upon hearing Shumei's call, they quickly opened the door, sat down at the table, and began to eat. Shumei didn't complain too much about them; at least they had taken good care of Ji Zong during the day, keeping him from getting cold or hungry.
Shumei had suffered so much that she would magnify even the smallest kindness from others. However, when it came to Boyi, she seemed to be completely blinded and could not feel the slightest kindness from him.
She didn't even bother to eat herself. She got a bowl of rice and went into the house to feed Ji Zong herself.
"Ji Zong, wake up and get up to eat."
Hearing Shumei's voice, Ji Zong suddenly woke up from his sleep, "Shumei, you're back. Are you tired? Are you hungry?"
Shumei smiled and shook her head, put the bowl in her hand on the bedside table, struggled to help Jizong up and lean him against the head of the bed, picked up the bowl, and prepared to feed Jizong one spoonful at a time.
"Come on, are you hungry? Eat it while it's hot."
"My hands can still move, I can do it myself. You're tired after a day, go eat something and rest early."
Ji Zong said as he snatched the bowl from Shu Mei's hands. Only then did he notice the mess on her hands. He should have known this earlier. Even grown men like them couldn't avoid bruising their hands, let alone a delicate woman like Shu Mei. He stared at Shu Mei's hands with a distressed look, his heart aching more than a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Your hand?"
Shumei quickly hid her hands behind her back and said, "It's okay, I'm going to eat." She said to Jizong with an awkward smile and walked out of the bedroom.
As Ji Zong ate his rice, tears dripped into his mouth, salty and bitter. Ever since his ordeal, Ji Zong had become particularly sentimental, unable to hold back his tears over the smallest of things.
