Chapter 235: Shumei Returns to the Village Alone

"Shumei, you go back first. I'll leave Youchen and Shuangning to you. I want to be alone and take care of Qianqian's affairs at the barber shop. I'll go back after I'm done. Don't worry."

Boyi found a very reasonable excuse, one that Shumei couldn't bear to refute.

What he said was very rational and his expression was calm.

"But—today—it's us—"

Shumei wanted to remind him that today was their wedding day, but when the words came to her lips, she couldn't say them, and she looked like she wanted to say something but couldn't.

Qianqian had just died. How could she be so heartless as to let Boyi and herself go home to attend the wedding banquet at this time?

Boyi thought his excuse was convincing enough, but Shumei didn't seem to think so.

Seeing that Shumei refused to leave, he continued to shout in a voice that was almost a roar: "Shumei, do you know? I am the unforgivable sinner. It was not until Qianqian died that I found out that she was pregnant with my child. But why didn't she tell me and endured the pain alone? Shumei, please, let me be quiet."

After hearing this, Shumei almost fell down the steps in front of the police station. This news was too shocking for her.

She shook her head violently. How could this be possible? How could Qianqian and Boyi—

She didn't believe it. She thought Boyi was just stimulated and talking nonsense.

She grabbed Boyi's arm, a worried look on her face. "Boyi, don't be like this, don't be like this, okay?"

Boyi looked at Shumei expressionlessly, then regained his composure. "Shumei, I'm not kidding. According to the timeline, that person was me. You may not know that Qianqian pursued me madly before, and I tried my best to reject her. However, I never expected that she would take advantage of my drunkenness. I really didn't mean to be irresponsible. I don't remember anything that happened that night. I thought it was just a somewhat realistic dream."

Boyi's expression was somewhat painful. Shumei didn't understand until now why Boyi was so much more painful than herself. It turned out that it was not because she witnessed Qianqian's death with her own eyes, nor because Qianqian blocked the knife for him, but there was another reason.

Shumei was extremely upset and had no reason to persuade Boyi to go back.

Not only that, she felt that she should also be quiet.

"Okay! Then come back quickly after you finish it. I'll wait for you at home."

Seeing that Boyi spoke calmly and his emotions were stable, she felt that Boyi was not avoiding the issue but really wanted to do something for Qianqian. She no longer worried that Boyi would become depressed and unable to get over this hurdle, and her worries were much lessened.

Boyi had no time to think about Shumei and himself. He didn't even consider how embarrassed Shumei would be if he let her go back to face the guests in the courtyard.

Boyi said nothing, looked at Qianqian's belongings in his hand, and pushed his bicycle towards Boyi's barber shop.

Shumei pushed her bicycle and followed Boyi unwillingly. Only after she saw Boyi open the door of the barber shop did she feel at ease and rode her bicycle towards the village.

Boyi's sister and brother-in-law, Wen Dazui's family, were all waiting at the door, hoping that Boyi and Shumei would come back.

The whole yard was in an uproar. It was almost noon, and the wedding banquet was being held, but the bride and groom were still nowhere to be seen.

This Shumei must have offended the matchmaker in her past life. For other people, weddings only happen once in a lifetime, and everything goes smoothly. But hers is such a complete turnaround. Her first wedding was a complete mess, and this second one was even worse; not even the groom showed up.

Shumei stepped on the pedals with great effort, feeling very suffocated in her heart.

Everything was fine, but then this bolt from the blue came. She didn't know how to face the guests later.

She didn't know whether Qianqian's death would affect her and Boyi's lives and prevent them from living a normal life.

She was distraught all the way.

The road home was so long, so long that she really wanted to stop and not go any further. But she couldn't. She could imagine that the family must be in chaos at this time. She had to go back to calm the guests and complete this wedding without a groom.

Before arriving at Boyi's house, Boyi's elder sister and Wen Dazui came to greet him anxiously.

"Shumei, you're finally back. The house is in chaos. Eh? Where's Boyi? Why hasn't Boyi come back yet?"

Shumei smiled awkwardly at them and said, "Let's go back and talk about it!"

Shumei couldn't explain what was going on in a few words. She pushed her bicycle and walked into Boyi's house surrounded by everyone.

The courtyard was filled with guests, all looking at the table laden with delicacies, but they could only look at them with trepidation. The bride and groom hadn't even arrived yet, so no one dared to pick up their chopsticks.

Everyone was a little excited when they saw Shumei come in.

"Here comes the bride, here comes the bride..."

There were cheers and shouts everywhere. Children were milling around Shumei, clamoring to get red envelopes from her.

Shumei was still wearing the new dress she'd tried on yesterday. It was a little dirty, but that didn't stop the children from identifying her. As soon as Shumei entered the room, they recognized her as the bride. Perhaps it wasn't her dress that identified her, but her face that told them she was the bride.

Shumei's mind is in a mess now, and she has no mood to pay attention to these troublesome children.

She parked her bicycle at the door and drove away the children surrounding her, "Get out of the way, get out of the way." She hurried into the house.

She didn't want to stay in the yard any longer, she was afraid to see this joyous scene.
