Xie Huaiye licked the stinging tip of his tongue.
It was numb and painful, and I could barely speak.
He looked at Yan Ning's smiling face, which was so close to his, stained with sweat.
That scene just now was extremely terrifying.
It gave him a strong sense of unreality.
He opened his mouth, his voice hoarse and somewhat confused:
My tongue... is numb... and seems... swollen...
Yan Ning was taken aback, then burst into loud laughter:
"Hahaha, that's right, swelling is the price to pay for breaking the evil spirits. I'll treat you to ten tubs of ice cream later, as much as you want! Iced to relieve the pain!"
She laughed, grabbed Xie Huaiye's arm, and pulled him up from the ground.
"Alright, stop reminiscing about your poor tongue."
She patted Xie Huaiye's back hard, almost making him stumble:
"Congratulations, Xie Huaiye! Your ghost-catching, working-class career is now—"
She deliberately dragged out the sound, her smile bright yet tinged with a hint of slyness:
"Officially open for business! Was this first day of work exciting enough? Was it full of twists and turns?"
"It's quite exciting..." Xie Huaiye murmured.
He recalled the terrifying face of the female ghost from earlier, and his stomach churned again.
This is too much for him to handle.
“Yan Ning”.
Xie Huaiye quickly pressed on, his voice tinged with urgency, "Then how do you usually control this talent? You can't just let me eat, sleep, or even..."
"When you go to the toilet, you're probably just staring at your friends, right?"
He imagined the scene.
The hairs on my body stood on end.
Yan Ning was amused by him, and the corners of her mouth curved up. She casually took something out of her pocket and handed it over.
"Here, it's simple, just put this on."
Xie Huaiye took it.
It was a piece of jade, about half the size of a palm, and warm to the touch.
The warmth was gentle, like a hand warmer held in the palm of your hand on a winter's day.
This unconsciously relaxed his tense nerves a little.
The jade is delicate and has an indescribable sheen.
He immediately hung it around his neck.
The jade felt warm and comfortable against my skin.
A strange sense of security quietly spread.
"Spirit Jade?" Xie Huaiye stroked it, asking curiously.
“Yes,” Yan Ning nodded, “When you need to open your eyes, just greet it and sense it with your thoughts, and it will listen to you.”
Yan Ning paused, then her tone became more serious, "And in crucial moments, it can protect you."
"You can still protect me?"
Xie Huaiye's eyes lit up; this was an unexpected bonus. "How does it bind us? Does it require blood?"
He subconsciously thought of the plots in those novels.
Yan Ning chuckled: "It's not that mysterious. Just find a clean cup and fill it with water."
Xie Huaiye did as instructed, ran to the toilet, and hurriedly found a glass.
I turned on the tap and filled a cup to the brim.
A few drops of water splashed onto the countertop.
He carefully carried the cup back.
"Then what?"
"Dip your fingertips in water, place it on the jade, and gently stroke it."
Yan Ning demonstrated the action, "Silently recite in your heart: Lingyu, Lingyu, I am your master."
"Remember, be sincere, as if you were making friends with it."
That sounds... a bit silly.
Xie Huaiye muttered to himself, but in order to get a good night's sleep, he decided to be foolish!
He took a deep breath and imitated Yan Ning.
I dipped my fingertip in some cool water and gently dabbed it onto the warm jade surface.
Water droplets rolled down the smooth surface, leaving a faint, shimmering trail.
He closed his eyes, his fingers gently stroking the jade, clearing his mind of all distractions, and silently repeating in his heart:
"Lingyu, Lingyu, I am your master... Xie Huaiye, I'm counting on you from now on..."
He focused his mind and felt his heartbeat slow down.
It was very quiet around.
It seems... a more pronounced warm current is rising in my chest?
It felt so good, like drinking a sip of warm soup.
He was overjoyed. Could it be that he had succeeded?
He slowly opened his eyes—
"ah--!"
A short scream got stuck in his throat.
All I could see was outside the window.
There was a wild ghost squatting there, with disheveled hair and wearing a tattered white dress!
She was staring straight at him with those empty eyes, only the whites of her eyes showing!
Xie Huaiye was so frightened that he took a step back.
Most of the water in the cup spilled out, soaking his trouser legs.
The icy sensation sent a shiver down his spine.
"Yan Ning, you're useless!"
Xie Huaiye pointed to the corner of the wall, his voice trembling, "I can still see ghosts!"
Yan Ning was also stunned, her brows furrowing slightly: "Hmm? That shouldn't be the case..."
She leaned closer to look at the jade pendant on Xie Huaiye's neck.
She glanced at his panicked face, then at the lonely ghost outside the window.
"Are you... sure you'll do as I say? Are you sincere?"
"Honest, absolutely honest!"
Xie Huaiye said anxiously, "I could feel the warm current, I thought we had succeeded, but when I opened my eyes..."
"I saw this lady make a deep eye contact with me, and she almost sent me away!"
He patted his chest, still shaken.
Yan Ning raised her hand and used a talisman to knock the wandering ghost outside the window down.
The wild ghost was sent flying five meters away before it could even make a sound.
Clearly, enjoying watching a spectacle is not a good thing.
Yan Ning stroked his chin again, staring thoughtfully at the jade.
Why did it fail?
A hint of confusion flashed in her eyes, then, as if remembering something, she suddenly slapped her forehead:
"Oh dear, look at my memory!"
A slightly embarrassed yet amused expression appeared on her face. "I forgot the most crucial step!"
