After finishing his water, Xie Huaiye put down his cup.
Then he picked up a bright red apple from the fruit basket next to him.
"Want some?" he asked, already holding a fruit knife.
Yan Ning looked at him.
President Xie... wants to peel an apple?
This scene is quite novel.
She gave a soft "hmm".
Xie Huaiye began peeling the skin.
His fingers were long and strong, and he held the knife very steadily.
But peeling apples is clearly not his forte.
The skin was peeled unevenly, with some pieces thick and others thin, and it broke several times.
He pursed his lips, his face serious and earnest.
It's as if they're tackling some global challenge.
Yan Ning looked at his focused profile.
And those slightly clumsy movements made me want to laugh.
And then I felt a soft spot in my heart.
Finally, an apple that wasn't very round, and was even a bit thin, was peeled.
Xie Huaiye looked at the results, seemingly not very satisfied.
He picked up a knife, cut the apple into small pieces, and placed them on a small plate.
Then I inserted toothpicks.
"Let me feed you." He took a piece and put it to Yan Ning's lips.
Yan Ning paused for a moment, then opened her mouth and ate the apple.
It tastes sweet.
"Is it good?" Xie Huaiye asked, his eyes filled with... anticipation?
Like a child waiting to be praised.
"Mmm, it's very sweet."
Yan Ning nodded.
Seeing the fine beads of sweat on his forehead, seemingly from peeling the apple, he added:
"You peeled it... very carefully."
Xie Huaiye seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
The corners of his mouth curved almost imperceptibly.
It was brief, but Yan Ning captured it.
Like a crack appearing on a frozen lake, letting in a sliver of light.
The atmosphere was somewhat quiet, and also somewhat subtle.
Xie Huaiye cleared his throat, sat up straight, and looked at Yan Ning with a serious expression:
"Shall I tell you a joke?"
"Huh? Telling a joke?"
Yan Ning blinked, somewhat surprised.
Xie Huaiye is telling jokes? The sun rose in the west?
She nodded, a hint of curiosity in her eyes.
"Why don't polar bears eat penguins?" Xie Huaiye's voice was still deep, but he deliberately softened it.
"Why?" Yan Ning asked cooperatively.
“Because…” Xie Huaiye paused, then gave the answer very seriously, “Penguins are in Antarctica.”
Yan Ning: "..."
The ward became even quieter.
Only the birds chirping outside the window.
Xie Huaiye looked at Yan Ning's unresponsive face.
He frowned slightly, seemingly unsure about the joke himself.
He tentatively asked, "Not funny?"
Yan Ning looked at him, who was unusually bewildered.
Finally, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Although it immediately aggravated the wound.
She cried out in pain, but a smile still appeared in her eyes.
"What a lame joke," she said, inhaling, but her eyes were smiling.
Xie Huaiye saw her smile, even though the process had been somewhat complicated.
But the worry in his eyes seemed to have subsided somewhat.
He suddenly reached out and naturally used his fingertips to gently wipe away the tears that had welled up in her eyes.
The movement was as fast as a gust of wind.
The warmth of her fingertips remained clearly on Yan Ning's skin.
Both of them were stunned for a moment.
The air seemed to freeze.
Only the sunlight is moving.
Xie Huaiye quickly withdrew his hand, his fingertips curling slightly.
He looked away and gazed out the window, his ears appearing suspiciously red.
But she tried to keep her voice calm: "You...sleep a little longer?"
Yan Ning also lowered her eyes, looking at her hands wrapped up like a rice dumpling, her heart pounding like a drum.
The spot where his fingertips had just touched felt like it had been burned by a tiny spark.
"Mmm..." she responded softly and obediently lay down.
She closed her eyes, but her eyelashes were still trembling slightly.
Xie Huaiye did not leave.
He remained seated in that chair.
My gaze returned to her peaceful sleeping face.
This time, however, there seemed to be something else in those deep eyes besides worry.
Incredibly gentle.
The sunlight outside the window was just right, streaming in warmly and enveloping the two of them.
The Su family.
Su Muyao had just returned from a boring dinner party.
Several well-dressed men surrounded her, showering her with attention.
I'd like to add you on WeChat so we can meet up next time.
She didn't even bother to lift her eyelids, coldly rejecting all of them.
"Hmph, a bunch of toads," she scoffed inwardly.
Who is Su Muyao? The apple of the Su family's eye!
Her future husband can only be Xie Huaiye, the man who stands at the top of the pyramid.
No other man is even worthy of carrying her shoes!
She nestled in the expensive leather sofa and habitually started scrolling through her phone.
Suddenly, a trending topic caught her eye:
Xie Huaiye carried Yan Ning out.
"What?!" Su Muyao's heart skipped a beat, and her finger clicked the button involuntarily.
High-resolution photos and video clips, crystal clear.
Xie Huaiye carried the unconscious Yan Ning down from the tall Ferris wheel.
He frowned and moved very carefully.
He carried Yan Ning all the way to the ambulance!
That protective posture, that tense expression...
It was a look she had never seen on Xie Huaiye's face before.
"ah--!"
A surge of anger welled up in Su Muyao's head.
She felt her blood boiling.
Why? Why is that unremarkable Yan Ning repeatedly protected by Brother Huaiye?
She was so angry she was trembling all over, without even thinking.
He grabbed the bone china cup he was drinking from on the coffee table and smashed it hard against the polished marble floor.
