Chapter 22 22. Compensation

Chapter 22 22. Compensation

"How is it possible"

Lodel thought Lovey was worrying too much.

With Grand Duke Dafen around, who would dare to do anything to Lovi? Didn't you see that the neighbors around him were all more peaceful than the others, and no one ever caused trouble?

"What if I want to separate the judicial power?" Lowe suddenly said.

Luo Deer didn't react at first, but after thinking about it carefully, his expression began to change: "Lo Wei, do you want to set up a judge position?"

"Yeah, I heard that the mayor and the town chief are in charge of everything. Isn't that inappropriate?" Lovey said as a matter of course.

"Think carefully about the expenses required to set up a separate judicial department. Once it is set up, it will be almost impossible to withdraw it." Lordel paused and warned solemnly: "Your political reforms must be based on the territory's finances. Simply put, you must be able to pay the corresponding price. Otherwise, it will just be a joke and will destroy your prestige as a lord."

"I can still afford a monthly salary of twenty silver dollars per person. I will set up three cities for the time being." Lowe muttered to himself.

"It's not just twenty silver dollars a month, there's also office space and staff to assist the judges, these are all expenses. There's almost no income from the expenses. You can pay for it yourself at the beginning, but you have to find a way to balance it. And will you consider raising taxes? Or reducing the number of maids around you?" Lodel curled her lips. She didn't believe in her heart that Lovey would choose the latter.

"How about I find a way to do business and make money?" Lovey suddenly had an idea.

"How do you make money? Selling food? Or weapons? There are no special products worth selling in the Earldom of Evelyn." Lodel snorted.

"You don't need to worry about that." Luo Wei thought to himself, as a time traveler, how could there be no way out? Luo Deer, just wait and see.

The team marched for three hours and finally saw the fields outside the town.

In the green wheat field, wheat ears sway in the breeze.

A sturdy peasant woman was bending over weeding in the field, singing loudly as if no one was around.

The rough voice may be suspected of noise pollution.

As the distance got farther, her voice gradually became smaller and disappeared.

Such a leisurely and comfortable town like Huange is inevitably a bit poor.

Most residents live in houses made of adobe or wood, while a few wealthy families live in houses made of stone.

Luo Wei looked at the scattered buildings in the distance. At the end of the road, someone was waving.

The team walked in a little more. Mayor Raja came up with a smile on his face and bowed slightly: "My Lord, some family members came here last night. May I ask when you need to announce the compensation?"

"As soon as possible, settle some people down first." Lovi's attitude was very clear, "Take me to the Executive Office now."

So straightforward? Raja thought to himself.

The administrative hall of Huange Town was much better than Lowe had imagined. It was a bungalow made of stone. The exterior was gray and white, and the interior was even paved with wooden floors.

Lovey sat in the main seat without hesitation and made a second request to Raja.

Population census.

“Indeed, there has been no census for ten years since the last one,” Raja echoed.

"Do you remember what the total population of Huange Town was in the last census?" Lowe asked.

Raja spoke out a number without hesitation: "Two thousand seven hundred and forty-six people."

"Are there many unregistered people in the town now? I mean, those with illegal residence."

"There are quite a few. In recent years, many relatives of the townspeople have come to seek refuge here, and some have even contracted land for farming. Of course, they are not considered our subjects. They are just partners, similar to merchants."

"Do you think these people have any intention of joining the territory?"

"As far as I know, most people want it but cannot get it because they have no connections. If you can get land by registering as a resident, who wouldn't want to? But if you accept people too easily, the indigenous people will have objections. I suggest you set a threshold."

“Makes sense”

Lodel's voice came from the door, "My Lord, we are ready."

Lowe stood up with the help of the table and walked out of the mayor's office with a serious face.

The streets outside the administration hall of Huange Town were crowded with people, so crowded were the squares and side roads that no one could get through.

"Hello, I'm Lovisien, the son of Earl Evelyn." After introducing his name at the beginning, Lovis slowly walked up to the podium and deliberately used magic to amplify his voice.

Evelyn had used this trick before, so the townspeople were not surprised. Evelyn used to come here to give a speech once a year.

As the scene quieted down, Lowe continued, "I want to say two things here. The first is about compensation for the maid applicants who were hurt by the goblins. After verification, each person will be compensated 500 silver dollars."

After the voice fell, the scene became noisy.

Five hundred silver dollars was too much of an impact for ordinary people. In fact, it was difficult for an ordinary family to have a surplus after normal expenses.

Even a very frugal person would only have a few dozen silver coins at most.

"Silence." Lowe shouted angrily, successfully suppressing all the noise.

Luo Deer watched from the side, covering her face and shaking her head. In her impression, Luo Wei was just a timid and obedient good guy. This was too much.

"Your Excellency the Lord is so majestic." Lan Lan said with a grin.

Perhaps due to the lord's power, the townspeople dared not whisper anymore.

Lowe put his hands behind his back and walked a few steps on the stage: "I am deeply sorry for those who have suffered misfortune. The compensation will be paid to the family members in one lump sum.

As for those who survive, I will distribute the 500 silver dollars annually over the next 25 years. That’s exactly 20 silver dollars per year.”

"Only twenty silver dollars?"

"How could this be? This is too little."

The audience suddenly became noisy. As the saying goes, the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment. Some people couldn't accept it and tried to rush to the stage to question him, but Laudel stepped forward to stop them.

Lowe gave his reasons: "Blind people cannot protect their own property. Annual payments can effectively reduce their risks and prevent their wealth from being maliciously snooped on. In addition, I will give an additional five acres of lifelong land to the living to use as a living guarantee, which will be taken back after death."

The relatives in the audience began to talk among themselves.

Most people think that Lowe's proposal is good and considerate.

A small number of people who had their eyes on this huge sum of money from the beginning seemed very unwilling to give up.

But no matter what, the lord's orders could not be disobeyed. Even if Lovi didn't give him a penny, he couldn't do anything to him.

At most they say some bad things behind your back.

Lodel pushed open the wooden box, and the gentle silver light dazzled people's eyes.
