Ferris wheel
Xu Feifei returned to her dormitory and stood in the corridor, gazing at the door opposite for a long time. Because of Lin Yuan's change of identity, this room was temporarily unused.
Lin Yuan handed her the key to the room for safekeeping, saying that he had applied to the school to leave the room vacant until she graduated, during which time she could modify the room as she pleased.
Xu Feifei slowly walked to the door, took out her key and opened it. A stuffy smell from the room, which had been kept closed, wafted out.
Turn on all the lights and windows, sit in the living room and quietly look around.
Lin Yuan's room was originally decorated in a simple and minimalist style. Now that she has moved out, the room feels even more empty and quiet.
The room was so quiet that you could hear a buzzing sound of electricity.
Xu Feifei lay on the sofa, staring blankly at the ceiling. Lin Yuan was still by her side, just taking more time off, but why did he feel so distant? It had only been one summer vacation, how could things have changed so much?
What would you be doing at this time during the previous semester?
Xu Feifei tried hard to recall her previous memories. It seemed that she and Lin Yuan were sitting at the table studying. Usually, Lin Yuan would be focused on writing problems, while Xu Feifei would stare blankly with her pen in her mouth when she encountered a problem she couldn't solve. Lin Yuan would then notice and ask her what she couldn't do.
How come someone as serious as her would notice when she's distracted?
Xu Feifei got up and walked to the table where she did her homework. She touched the small marks left from when she was daydreaming. Before the real separation had even begun, she was already lost in memories.
Xu Feifei's phone vibrated a few times. She took it out and saw that it was a message from Lin Yuan: Are you free tomorrow? I'd like to hang out with you in City A.
This message immediately pulled her out of her reverie, and she quickly sent him a message: Yes, where are we going?
Lin Yuan: It's a secret. Can I pick you up at 2 PM tomorrow?
Xu Feifei: Sure, I'll wait for you at the school gate?
Lin Yuan: Okay. By the way, don't tell Su Huan about this trip. She's been such a bright third wheel lately.
Xu Feifei couldn't help but laugh when she saw the message. Since the start of the new semester, Su Huan had been sticking to her and Lin Yuan in various ways, afraid that she would leave her behind and run away alone.
However, while the light bulb was bright, it caused quite a bit of trouble.
Xu Feifei: Okay, I won't tell her.
The two chatted for a while, and Xu Feifei's initially depressed mood improved considerably. It was past 11 p.m. when she stood up to go back and noticed a small piece of paper tucked into her desk.
Only a small corner was visible, but she still saw it. Xu Feifei took out the small piece of paper, and in flowing handwriting was a line of poetry: "Graceful as clouds, gentle as rain."
The back part was also blacked out. Xu Feifei stared at the note for a long time. This was a line of poetry that was forcibly linked to her name at the beginning.
I used to study here every day, and I never even noticed this note. I don't know when it was placed here, or how long ago it was left.
A sudden thought welled up in her mind, and Xu Feifei took out a pen and wrote on the back of the words Lin Yuan had said: "A caged bird longs for its old forest, and a fish in a pond yearns for its old pool."
After writing it down, she felt something was missing, so she added the name Lin Yuan. Xu Feifei looked at the note with satisfaction; the meaning of her and Lin Yuan's names was written on this small piece of paper.
I carefully folded it and put it back in its original place. I left it there, leaving a tiny footprint in the room.
The next morning, Xu Feifei got up early and ordered a bouquet of flowers from the florist, requesting it be delivered to her dormitory building. As she left, she saw the flower stand filled with blooming blue plumbago, its drooping petals swaying gently in the air.
This sudden thought reminded her of the time she had seen Lin Yuan in the flower room at home.
In the afternoon, Xu Feifei arrived at the agreed-upon place as promised. Upon arrival, she saw Lin Yuan already waiting there and quickly went up to him, asking, "What are your plans for today?"
Lin Yuan handed her the lemon tea and smiled, saying, "How about we go see a movie first, then go to the amusement park?"
Xu Feifei took the drink and drank it. It sounded like an ordinary day, but isn't that how couples spend their time? Watching movies, eating out, strolling around, an ordinary yet happy day.
"Okay, I'll do whatever you say today. I haven't been to the amusement park in City A yet, it should be a lot of fun."
"Haven't you ever been to an amusement park before?"
Xu Feifei recalled that her parents had taken her to amusement parks when she was a child, and shook her head, saying, "It's not that I've never been to one, but I've only been to small amusement parks. I've never been to a large one. The basic rides weren't exciting; they were pretty ordinary."
Lin Yuan nodded, thought for a moment, and said, "I've never been either. Amusement parks have a lot of rides, how about we skip the movie and go play them?"
Xu Feifei frowned and shook her head, saying, "I want to watch a movie with you, and it's the middle of the day, so it's hot and sunny."
Xu Feifei took his hand and held the lemon tea in front of him, gesturing for him to drink it quickly. Lin Yuan moved the umbrella handle aside, took a sip through the straw, and drank it.
Xu Feifei said with a mischievous smile, "Did you deliberately only buy one cup?"
Lin Yuan's lips curled up, but he remained silent, everything was understood without being spoken.
The movie they watched in the afternoon was just the two of them, because Lin Yuan had booked all the afternoon showings in advance, so there was no one to bother them. During the movie, they could talk about the plot at any time, laugh out loud, cry loudly, and even snuggle together to watch, making it a comfortable and relaxing experience.
"After looking at it for so long, is it really that good?"
Xu Feifei looked at the photo in her hand, her smile never fading, her eyes crinkling.
"Lin Yuan, are you afraid of heights? Look at your expression on the roller coaster, hahaha."
Lin Yuan snatched the photo from her hand, holding it high so she wouldn't see it.
"I'm not afraid of heights. If I were, would I be riding a Ferris wheel with you?"
At this moment, the Ferris wheel slowly rose; it was a little past six in the evening, just as the sun was about to set. The entire sky seemed to have fallen into an orange-red sea of fire, enveloping the entire city of A.
Xu Feifei was skeptical and carefully observed his expression. "What's with the photos? You kept your eyes closed the whole time; there wasn't a single one with your eyes open."
Lin Yuan didn't explain further, but smiled and said calmly, "I don't like the feeling of weightlessness."
"Weightlessness? How would you feel riding a Ferris wheel now?"
"It's okay, you can ride it if you don't like it. The Ferris wheel moves quite slowly, so you won't feel much."
Xu Feifei nodded, and when she turned to look out the window, she was dazzled by the golden sky. The Ferris wheel slowly rose higher and higher, getting closer and closer to the sky.
Xu Feifei stood up and admired the brilliant sunset through the glass. Pointing at the sun, she said, "Lin Yuan, doesn't this sun look like a giant salted egg yolk?"
Lin Yuan walked over to her and asked, "Are you hungry?"
Xu Feifei widened her eyes, pouted, and said, "Lin Yuan, you have no sense of humor at all. Don't you think the sun looks like a salted egg yolk? It's so big and yellow."
"Like, when we go downstairs later, how about we order a salted egg yolk shrimp and tofu casserole? Salted egg yolk chicken wings? Salted egg yolk noodles? Or maybe an egg yolk pastry?"
Xu Feifei took a deep breath as she listened to him recite the names of the dishes. She had been playing for a while and was already a little hungry, but she was even hungrier after he finished reciting the names of the dishes.
She turned to look at Lin Yuan, remained silent for a long time, holding her breath as she stared at him without saying a word.
"Lin Yuan, you're really ruining the mood. Okay, I'm a little hungry."
Okay, she didn't want to admit she was hungry. She hadn't thought about food in the first place; it was Lin Yuan who had whetted her appetite, not that she was actually hungry.
Lin Yuan smiled and took out a piece of candy for her, "Hold this in for now, we'll go downstairs and eat in a bit."
Xu Feifei took the candy and popped it into her mouth, smacking it a few times before saying, "Yay, it's my favorite grapefruit flavor! What flavor is yours?"
When Lin Yuan took out the candy, she recognized it as the mixed-flavor refreshing candy she usually loved. Her favorite flavor was grapefruit and lemon, and her least favorite was banana and cantaloupe. If she accidentally tasted either of those flavors, she would spit it out immediately.
Xu Feifei strongly objected to banana and cantaloupe flavored candies being considered "freshening" candies. She said that it would be enough if these two flavors could prevent bad breath, let alone freshen it.
Zeng Hao, however, disagreed, saying he really liked them. If Xu Feifei discovered these two flavors of candy before eating, she would definitely give them to Zeng Hao so he could have them.
"Mint flavored."
"The mint one is good too."
As the two watched the sunset slowly sink below the horizon, Lin Yuan checked his watch when the Ferris wheel had completed its third rotation. He then chewed up the last bit of candy in his mouth and swallowed it.
"Feifei, will you still miss me after you return to your world?"
Xu Feifei was stunned, looking at him in surprise. She had thought about talking to Lin Yuan about this, but not now, and certainly not waiting for Lin Yuan to bring it up.
Lin Yuan asked again, "Really?"
Xu Feifei looked up at him, and their eyes met.
"Of course, you are a very important person to me. If I go back, will you miss me?"
Lin Yuan held her in his arms, lowered his head and whispered in her ear, "Just like you, you are also a very important person in my heart."
Lin Yuan pulled her aside a little, and as the Ferris wheel was about to reach its highest point, he said to her, "Feifei, I like you."
Before she could react, Lin Yuan lowered his head and kissed her lips. The air inside the Ferris wheel smelled of grapefruit mixed with mint, and outside the window was the sky with a sweet orange scent.
Xu Feifei stood frozen in place, the sudden situation leaving her speechless for a long time. She stared blankly at the top of Lin Yuan's head, his eyelashes brushing against her face, tickling her.
After a while, Xu Feifei's face gradually turned red, and she patted his shoulder to indicate that she was about to suffocate.
Before leaving, Lin Yuan lingered on his lips for a moment, then gave them a light peck.
Seeing her red lips and heavy breathing, her face and ears flushed, he couldn't help but laugh. He leaned down and rested his head on her shoulder, saying, "Feifei, I really like you so much, I really like you so much, I like you so much..."
