Chapter 3: Eggs, is that something she can eat?
Xing Xing leaned on the edge of the table, trying to raise her face, and smiled softly at Bai Xiaofeng: "Thank you, auntie."
So well behaved?
Bai Xiaofeng was stunned at first, and then she laughed out loud, "Oh!" and said to Mrs. Wei, "Mother, you have to say, Xingxing is a very pretty little girl." As she spoke, she scooped a little more of the rice from the pot that she had originally intended to give to the little girl.
Mrs. Wei saw it clearly and gave Bai Xiaofeng a satisfied glance.
Bai Xiaofeng was suddenly impressed by her mother-in-law's approval. She was about to say something when she heard Grandma Wei order her to bring Xingxing a boiled egg.
Wow!
This is a serious matter.
The smile on Bai Xiaofeng's face suddenly froze!
This wild vegetable porridge that everyone can eat is fine, it’s not her food anyway, and it’s okay for her to be generous, and she can also please her mother-in-law, but this egg is different!
Eggs are so expensive! She can’t even eat them if she wants to!
Not only Bai Xiaofeng, who was distributing the rice, couldn't hold back any longer, but everyone else in the room was also stunned.
Li Chunhua stammered, "Mom, these are eggs..."
Mrs. Wei glared at him and said, "What's wrong with eggs? There are seven eggs in total. Your two brothers each take one, take two. The second brother's two brothers take two. The third brother has only one brother, take one. As for the remaining two, can't your father and I each have one?"
Li Chunhua was so angry that she stammered: "But, but..."
"I told you, I saved my own food to raise this little girl!" Mrs. Wei interrupted Li Chunhua impatiently, then glared at her eldest son and got angry with him, "Big brother, I can't even take care of an egg now, right?!"
Although Yu Daniu felt sorry for the egg, his mother's words were a huge matter to him and he could not disobey.
Yu Daniu immediately said, "Mom, you definitely have the power to take care of things! Mom can take care of everything at home!" He rebuked Li Chunhua, "I think you are rebelling! Eat your rice!"
Li Chunhua didn't dare to say anything else and just lowered her head in silence.
Mrs. Wei got so angry over a boiled egg that no one else at the table dared to say anything.
Bai Xiaofeng took advantage of the situation and took the boiled egg with a smile on her face and put it in front of Xingxing: "Xingxing, come, eat the egg."
Xing Xing timidly held onto the edge of the table, raised her eyes, and looked here and there.
She took the boiled egg hesitantly and clumsily and peeled it carefully.
Only then did Mrs. Wei's expression ease a little.
Old Man Yu coughed and said, "Hurry up and eat. It rained last night, so there's a lot to do today! After you finish eating, all of you brothers should follow me to the fields."
Several men from the Yu family responded.
Bai Xiaofeng observed the atmosphere at the dinner table and quickly called out to share the eggs: "Come on, come on, kids, eat too. Huai'er, try it quickly. Don't you like runny eggs? Second Auntie cooked this especially for you..."
The atmosphere at the dinner table was somewhat relaxed.
Everyone hurriedly picked up a handful of pickled vegetables with chopsticks, lowered their heads and ate big mouthfuls of the watery porridge mixed with wild vegetables.
Soon the only sound on the table was the sound of people eating rice.
Xing Xing was focused and was still struggling hard with the eggshell.
She peeled it very carefully, and after peeling it for a long time, the egg white was white and tender, without any damage at all.
After peeling the precious boiled egg, Xing Xing carefully placed the white and tender egg into Mrs. Wei's bowl.
Mrs. Wei was picking up pickled radishes and glanced at the bowl subconsciously. Half of the white egg was still sticking out of her bowl.
Mrs. Wei was stunned for a moment.
Xingxing raised her little face towards Grandma Wei and smiled softly: "Grandma, eat. Xingxing doesn't want to eat." The skinny little girl said, trying hard to hold back and sucking a little saliva.
Mrs. Wei felt as if someone had stabbed her hard in the heart, and her chopsticks trembled.
She didn't say anything, but her face looked a little unhappy.
Xingxing was a little anxious. Why didn’t grandma eat?
She hurriedly said, "Grandma, Xingxing washed her hands. They are not dirty. Really, look!" Xingxing opened her hands and anxiously showed them to Grandma Wei. Her hands were not dirty. "Grandma, eat this quickly. This will keep you from getting sick and keep you healthy!"
She racked her brains, thinking about the benefits of eggs in cognition, and was anxious to convince Mrs. Wei.
Mrs. Wei felt even worse.
Old Man Yu quickly took the boiled egg in front of him and nodded to Mrs. Wei: "Your boiled egg is a token of my love. I have peeled it for you. You should eat it quickly."
As he spoke, Old Man Yu quickly peeled the boiled egg in front of him and put it in Xingxing's bowl.
Xingxing panicked and said quickly, "Grandpa, you eat it...Xingxing can't eat it."
Old Man Yu coaxed, "Why can't you eat it? My dear, this is peeled for you."
In her vague memory, eggs were very precious and very good for people. The blurry-faced grandmother always yelled at her, saying that she was a little bitch and was not worthy of eating eggs.
Tears slowly welled up in Xingxing's eyes.
Eggs, is that something she can eat?
Old man Yu saw the little girl sitting there in a daze, her round almond-shaped eyes filled with mist, which made people feel heartbroken.
He uttered "Ouch" and hurriedly coaxed: "My dear, isn't it just a boiled egg? You don't want to eat it, do you think Grandpa's hands are dirty?"
As he spoke, Old Man Yu deliberately stretched out his hand in a serious manner to show Xingxing.
Xing Xing denied it in a panic: "No, no! I, I will eat it!"
In order to prove that she really didn't dislike Old Man Yu, the little girl picked up the beautiful hard-boiled egg with chopsticks and stuffed it into her mouth. However, she ate too quickly and choked. Her little face turned red and she stared.
Mrs. Wei didn't care about anything else. She hurriedly stroked the little girl's back to help her breathe smoothly, saying, "Eat slowly, eat slowly."
Old Man Yu was also startled. He kept asking Xing Xing concernedly, "Are you feeling better? Are you still choking? Grandpa, can I get you a glass of water?"
Xing Xing was chewing a hard-boiled egg that she had never eaten before. She felt Mrs. Wei's gentle caress on her back and heard the caring voices of Mrs. Wei and Old Man Yu in her ears.
Finally, she could no longer control the tears in her eyes and they fell drop by drop.
…
After finishing the meal, Li Chunhua felt a mixture of emotions.
Bai Xiaofeng was tidying up the table and gave her a look, indicating that she should go out and talk.
The two sisters-in-law took the bowls to the kitchen. Fortunately, it rained all night, so all the water containers in the house were filled with water, making it easier to wash the bowls. Bai Xiaofeng wiped the bowls with a rag and whispered to Li Chunhua, "Sister-in-law, I see that mother and father's attitude seems to really want to raise that little girl."
Li Chunhua was scolded twice by Wei Pozi at the dinner table. She felt a little weak and said in a gloomy tone: "She is just a little girl. I think she is quite sensible. If mother wants to raise her, then raise her. What can we, as her daughter-in-law, say?"
After saying that, Li Chunhua lifted the curtain and went out.
Bai Xiaofeng was a little unwilling, so she rolled her eyes and planned to go back and ask her silly man.
At this time, Mrs. Wei stood at the door of the main room and called her grandchildren over.
Soon, four grandsons, tall and short, stood in front of Mrs. Wei.
Mrs. Wei frowned and looked out: "Where's Ju Ge'er?"
Ju Ge'er was the youngest boy in the Yu family before Xing Xing came. He was the only child in the third room and he is just four years old this year.
The oldest, Huai, replied quickly, "Grandma, just now Third Aunt said that Ju had trouble digesting what he ate, so she took him out for a walk."
Mrs. Wei was not very happy and grumbled, "I didn't see Ju Ge'er having any indigestion when he was eating just now. It's just that the third daughter-in-law has taken good care of the child."
Yu Yongju is the only son of the third wife. His mother, Su Rouer, is a girl who married into the county. She behaves differently from the country people. Yu Yongju is four years old this year. He is a little bit spoiled by his mother. The third wife is used to being married, so she doesn't care much about it. But Mrs. Wei is inevitably a little worried.
But Mrs. Wei only complained once and then let it go without saying anything else. She only told the other four grandsons in a serious tone: "You have also met Xingxing. From now on, Xingxing is your sister. You must treat Xingxing as your own sister and not bully her. If others bully her, you must protect her. Do you understand?"
