Chapter 40: Last Light

He calmed down, looked at his grandmother who was still sleeping, and breathed a sigh of relief. He supported himself with his hands and slowly sat up, leaning against a tree beside him.

He looked at Xiao Yueli and asked, "What is this?"

Little Bell smiled and said, "Big brother, I'm Little Bell. You and grandma fainted, and my grandma and the others just happened to find you and brought you here to cool off. They also gave you some water."

As she spoke, Xiao Lingdang pointed at Li and Zhao who were washing clothes nearby.

Zhao heard the sound, washed her hands and came over, smiling, "Child, are you awake? How are you? Are you still dizzy? There's some water here. If you're thirsty, you can drink some."

He was staying not far from the cave because it was cooler there, allowing them to sleep more comfortably. Naturally, they could also hear the gurgling sound of water inside, which was a pleasant surprise.

"There really is water, grandma, thank you!"

Zhao waved her hand. "It's okay! You're all good kids. Here, there's porridge and bread. Come eat something to fill your stomach."

The boy turned around and found that his sister had already handed it to him, "Qiaomei, have you eaten?"

Qiaomei swallowed inconspicuously and said, "Well, I have eaten brother. I ate before you woke up."

Little Bell turned around and exposed her, "No, my great-grandmother gave it to her. She couldn't bear to eat it, so she said she wanted to leave it for you and grandma."

Qiaomei felt a little embarrassed when she was exposed, so she quickly lowered her head and didn't dare to look at her brother's face, for fear that he would be angry.

But I don't even have time to feel touched, so how can I bear to be angry with her?

"Qiaomei, I know you want to save it for me and grandma, but you are still young. Your body won't be able to bear it if you don't eat. Come, I will feed you, okay?"

Qiaomei's eyes turned red when she heard this. "I don't want to eat. Brother has to carry grandma on his back. It's the hardest part. He almost fainted. Qiaomei is all alone. It's okay to eat less. Brother, eat quickly!"

As he said that, he started pushing and shoving his brother. They were pushing each other back and forth and he was really afraid that the bowl of porridge would spill.

Seeing this, Zhao quickly stopped the two of them and said, "Alright, alright, you're both good kids, stop pushing it away. You're both still young, so there's no more food, but I can still give you a bite to eat."

"Young man, you eat this first. I'll go get some for your sister. Oh! God, what a sin!" He said, and turned to walk towards the tent.

Qiaomei and her brother blushed. They really didn't mean that and wanted to refuse, but Zhao didn't stop at all.

Xiao Lingdang also thought that they were not bad people, so she saved them if she could, which was also a meritorious deed, and this was also part of the purpose of her reincarnation.

If she can accumulate enough merits, then it will be easier and smoother for her to make the leap to the Dragon Gate later.

Moreover, the more merits she has, the more spiritual power she can use, so this is a great benefit to her.

"Don't worry, Qiaomei. Let your brother eat quickly. There are wild vegetables everywhere here. When you're full, you can go dig up some more. Wild vegetables are delicious, so you won't have to go hungry later."

Qiaomei nodded and said, "Yes, brother, eat quickly. When you have enough energy, we can go dig some wild vegetables and return them to grandma and Xiaolingling."

The boy also knew the priorities of the matter at hand and nodded, but he did not eat the pancake. He only drank half a bowl of porridge and put the pancake and bowl aside to leave them for his grandmother.

Afterwards, Zhao gave the same pancakes and porridge, but Qiaomei only took the porridge, drank it greedily, and then pulled her brother to dig wild vegetables nearby.

They dug with their hands as they had no other tools, but it was obvious that they were also children from farmers' families. They dug wild vegetables very smoothly and their speed was not slow at all.

Xiao Lingling looked at Zhao and said, "Grandma, is it okay for them to eat so little? Besides, it would be tiring to dig wild vegetables without any tools."

Zhao sighed, "This is what it means when children from poor families grow up early. They certainly don't have enough to eat, but they don't dare to eat too much. They are two good children. Let them dig. If they send us food, we will collect it and then give them two bowls of rice when we cook it."

After hearing what her grandmother said, Xiao Lingdang didn't care any more and took Jin Bei to go play with Lin Wu and the others.

The old lady was in a coma for quite a while, and only woke up slowly when it was getting dark.

Qiaomei and her brother did not leave far and would check on the old lady from time to time, so they discovered that she had woken up almost immediately.

The two children were extremely excited, and Qiaomei even rushed over, hugged the old lady and cried loudly.

She was really scared. Her parents were gone. What would happen to her and her brother if something happened to her grandmother?

However, she was too optimistic. Little Bell had already seen that the old lady was already on her last legs.

The old lady was very gentle. She raised her hand and touched Qiaomei's head, smiling, "Be good, don't cry, Qiaomei. Qiaomei is the most sensible and obedient, right? Grandma is doing well!"

Chen Shuxu gently helped his grandmother lean against the tree behind him, and borrowed some hot water from Li in a bowl.

"Grandma, have some water, please! We met a kind person who not only gave us water but also some food. Here, Qiaomei and I have already eaten, and this is for you."

The old lady looked at the pancake in his hand with some surprise.

When Zhao heard that she had woken up, she came over to check on her. "Old sister, are you awake? How do you feel now? Are you feeling better?"

The old lady probably hadn't felt the kindness of outsiders for a long time, and Zhao's short words made her eyes red.

"Big sister, I'm so sorry to have caused you so much trouble. Life is not easy these days. I really don't know how to thank you!"

"Old sister, you are not saying that. Nowadays, when there are natural disasters or man-made disasters, fleeing is a last resort. Now that we have encountered this, we can't just stand by and watch someone die.

Your two grandchildren are so kind! Look, after eating something, they brought me back a big basket of wild vegetables!"

The old lady was pleased with this. "That's how it should be. Food is so expensive these days. It's not right to eat for free. I should be grateful!"

It's no wonder that this old lady and Zhao got along quite well. After they talked for a few words and ate something, the old lady had more energy to speak.

However, they were in very poor physical condition and it was getting late, so it was definitely impossible to travel quickly. They could only rest here for a while like Zhao and the others.

Since you have to live here, you definitely can't just sleep on the ground. A healthy person will get sick after a few days of sleeping.

So Li and Fang helped to get some hay, and everyone worked together to build a small tent for them and lent them a set of rather worn bedding.

However, Xiao Lingling's eyes were not wrong, although the old lady's condition was indeed a little better when she woke up.

But after just one night's sleep, I was already breathing in more than out the next morning...
