The image in front of her was showing Kieran in a car with someone she doesn’t recognize. Matthew just told her that this was the man that Kieran met after he came here. And he— he was the dog of the de Cene Family.
"And you think they are cooking up something?" she asked. However, her mind was still on Phil who was with Baba and some doctor right now. They are doing some more tests to find out the reason why he had a hybrid’s blood on his system.
"Are you alright?" Matthew asked.
"Of course, why do you ask?"
"You seemed.... Different."
"Different? How?"
"You are worried about him?" He got up and took her hand, pulling her up.
"What are you— "
"Come..." he said.
Ava smiled in response then she followed him towards the couch. He sat and pulled her down towards his lap.
"What are you— " His warmth enveloped her. It was something she didn’t even know she needed.
"You are not fine." His voice was gentle, too gentle. She didn’t like it. But she had no strength to tell him that. Plus, she liked to stay in his arms. She liked to stay like this... for a long... long time.
"Yeah," she uttered.
He caressed her head and slowly bend down to kiss her forehead. In response, she snuggled and rested her head on his shoulder.
"I’m tired..."
"You just woke up."
"Yeah..."
"Phil will be fine," he said.
"That’s not what I was worried about."
"Then?"
"He told me something," Ava said. "I realized he was right. And yeah... the truth is cruel. It hurts. But that’s the truth."
"Hmmm..."
"I never trusted anyone other than myself," she blinked when she realized that tears were already running down her cheeks. She didn’t want to cry.
Damnit!
How could she cry in front of Matthew?
She let out a long sigh.
"Sorry..."
Instead of saying anything, Matthew just held her closer, tighter. It was as if he was comforting her without really saying it. And honestly? Ava preferred it that way.
No words.
Just a warm comforting hug.
She would love to stay like this forever.
"My mother died when I was really young," Matthew said. "She was killed by... a witch that she trusted. The woman she trusted so much."
Ava gulped.
"Since then... I never trusted anyone too."
She said nothing.
"Does that sound... cheesy?" he suddenly asked after a few seconds of silence.
"Yeah."
"It does?"
"Yeah."
"Really?"
"I said, yes. Hey!" Her eyes widened when he suddenly poke her side. "No poking."
He chuckled at that. "I could poke you with something that you would like. But the timing isn’t really right."
"Is there really a good timing for some... nice poking?" she let out a fake gasp. It was as if she just realized that now. "I didn’t know that."
"You are smiling," he said, his eyes seemed to sparkle against the low lighting inside the room.
"Only because you started talking about poking me..."
"Pervert."
"Hey! How did you know that?"
He stared at her in disbelief before shaking his head and letting out a chuckle.
"I’m sorry," he said.
"For poking me?"
"For trying to hide things from you."
"Oh?" she leaned back, her arms were around his neck. "And you are just saying sorry now?"
"I thought it was protecting you. It was a mistake."
"Yeah. It was."
"I’m sorry."
"I haven’t met any Lycan who actually gave me a sincere apology, you know," she smiled.
He snorted at that.
"You know... when I was asleep... I went somewhere."
"I know."
"Hm?"
"I felt it."
"You felt that I was gone?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"Something vanished. My wolf felt it."
"Then... are you wondering where I went?" she asked.
"Where?"
"I don’t know."
"You don’t know?"
"Yes, I really don’t. It was dark. I just heard... the sound of water. I kept on walking until I just decided to stop."
"Was it..."
"Another dimension? Maybe? I don’t know. But I felt tired. Yet, I didn’t feel any hunger or thirst."
"So, how did you get out?"
"I thought of... you."
He lifted an eyebrow, his lips lifting into a smirk.
"And your dixk," she added.
"Oh?"
"So I think thinking about it might be some sort of a secret sign. Like some sort — doorway?"
He laughed and she couldn’t stop herself from smiling. It sounded pleasant. It was deep and comforting. It was... warm. It was home.
Yes. She was home.
"Can you say something serious?" he said while chuckling.
"I am serious. What made you think I was joking? After walking for so long, my head started talking to me. It was like it was telling me to... I don’t know. To stay in that place. It was peaceful and nice. It was quiet. No enemies. No people wanting to hurt me."
"And then you start thinking of me?"
"And your dixk! Aw! Why did you poke me again!?"
He grinned in response. "I thought you liked it when I poke you?"
"Pervert," she rolled her eyes. "But the point is... I woke up inside my body after thinking about you. Do you think it was the mating thing?"
"I don’t know."
"What about the stones? The carvings? Did Baba say anything about them?"
For a long time, Matthew just stared at her. Then he held her chin and pulled her in for a quick kiss.
"Can you stop thinking about those things? It doesn’t concern us," he said.
"But aren’t you curious about it? It started when... we kissed."
"Right but I don’t like you thinking about that tablet."
"Why?"
"I just thought we already have enough on our plate."
"Enough?"
"Remember the address that Jude gave you?"
"You mean Samuel’s address?"
He nodded.
"You found him?"
"Yes. We found him."
"Is he..."
"He is alive, Ava. We found him in... Cuba."
"Cuba?"
"He is looking for a shifter. A serial killer who killed six shifters ten years ago. And Trillium just asked him to find him and bring him to him... alive."
Ava’s eyes widened. The thing is... Samuel is human. "Was he... alone?"
"I’m afraid so," Matthew said. "Whoever sent him there... didn’t want him to come back.
