Chapter 181: Book of Cain

"Angels and what?" Ava scoffed. "I mean no offense, but — demons?"

"You haven’t seen one."

"Uh... No? And so are like maybe ninety-nine percent of the world."

"So you don’t believe that they exist?"

"I — "Ava turned her head away. "It’s not that I don’t believe in them, it’s just that it’s close to impossible." She pursed her lips as her eyes sprang back to the old man. "So, what are you trying to say? That I’m like... an angel or a demon?"

"No. Angels and Demons cannot have a physical body. A human body cannot house a demon or an angel without... dying."

"So, they are so powerful that if they try to possess someone— "

"It could kill them. Yes." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

Ava looked at the book.

"The book of Cain?"

"Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel and god punished him to wander for all eternity."

"And?"

"This is his book about the celestials."

"Celestials?" Ava asked.

"Angels, demons, and dragons."

"Dragons?" The first two aren’t surprising. But dragons? Uh....

"They no longer exist, at least not in this realm."

"You mean Cain is a dream walker?"

"We believe he was."

"He wrote a book about planes and the celestials?"

Shaman Gaas shrugged. "It wasn’t until the thirteenth century when they started compiling some tablets that they found. Slowly, we were able to translate half of them. Until now, we aren’t sure if this is the complete version of the book. On it were names and physical descriptions of demons and angels."

"Like the archangels?"

"And the ones who rank higher than them."

Ava stared at the book. Angel Rankings. For some reason, this is giving her an ominous feeling.

"And what does this have to do with me?" she asked.

"I suspect you are a descendant of an angel or a demon. To be more specific, I am leaning towards a demon. That explains the magick that is drawn from anger."

"That conclusion is a bit — " she blinked. Seeing the Shaman’s serious face, she added. "Do you have proof?"

"We will change the training method and see if it suits you."

"Wait — you know how to train a demon?"

"No. Of course not."

"Then?"

"The book states that angels and demons cannot possess a human. So, they give them their essence. They give humans a part of their souls. I have a way to train the soul."

"And that involves dream walking, yes?"

"Precisely."

"Hold on..." Ava blinked when the realization hit her. "Are you going to tell me that dream walkers might be Cain’s descendants?"

"We have no proof that we are his descendants. But it is believed that dream walking is inherited. Again, we cannot confirm this. But shouldn’t you be thinking about— "

"Then let’s do it." Ava interrupted him. "I don’t care. I just want to become stronger."

The old man stared at her. "Then we will start it once you familiarize yourself with the book. These are all translated. The rest of the texts aren’t. Some of — some of the witches who translated them lost their lives before they could translate a paragraph."

Ava lifted an eyebrow as she opened the book. Just as the Shaman said, it was full of images and descriptions as well as names that she could barely pronounce. The book was enormous, yet the writings inside were so small that she had to squint her eyes to read some of the words.

For a few hours, Ava sat there reading the yellowish pages of the paper. The candlelights didn’t actually help her, as it was only making her reading experience worse.

"If you have questions, you can ask me." The Shaman said. He must have sensed her curiosity as she continued to read each page of the large book.

"The Pits... It was mentioned here." Ava said.

"Ah," the old man was staring at her in a very peculiar way. She frowned.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I thought you were going to ask me why your head is hurting or why you feel weaker or why the letters are slowly dancing under your eyes and why are you feeling dizzy?"

"Uh — the letters are small. If that’s what you wanted me to say. It’s uh — uncomfortable." But nothing like what the old man expected.

"So you don’t feel weak?"

"No." Why would she? The contents inside are really interesting. It contains a few things about history and even the first time that Cain met a shifter and a witch. She found it very educational.

"Hmmm.... Don’t mind me."

"Then what about the pits?"

"We believe Cain created the pits and maybe even the whole Mourning Pits."

"He could use magick?"

"We have no information that states otherwise. However, without magick, it would be hard for him to fight against demons."

Ava nodded. According to the book, Cain had been doing his best to fight off the demons that get lost in the demon world and would accidentally wander into the human world. That’s the reason why he was able to list and even draw them.

Of course, it sounded like some fantasy book about fighting demons. If not for the magick that seemed to flow through her body as she read the texts, Ava would think that it was just something that an old witch wrote. The magick from the book seemed very ancient, archaic.

She loved to know more about it.

"So, he created the pits to stop demons from going into the Earth. Then... how come you mentioned something about demons giving essences to humans? If they cannot come here, there shouldn’t be any way to — " She stopped talking as realization hit her like a boulder. "The pits."

"Exactly..."

"The people who managed to survive inside the pits lost their memories. So, they can’t really tell us about demons." Ava told herself. "They forget everything, including the fact that a demon... gave them their essence."

"I always thought you were average. It seems that I need to think about my initial assessment."

Ava ignored the old man’s words as his face turned uglier and uglier.

"So you think that my mother who abandoned me, the one who disappeared when I was but a small child, is someone from the pits," Ava said.
