Chapter 254: The King

Ava let out her umpteenth sigh as she stared at her untouched food.

And no.

She wasn’t eating it because she thought it was poisoned. Or because of what she had talked about with Kieran earlier.

She wasn’t eating it because... it tasted weird.

The witch who made this insisted that this was intentional. Eating vegetables would be good for her health. Especially now that she had lost a lot of weight. The witch even dared tell her that her cheekbones were so sharp, it could accidentally cut anyone.

Damnit, she cursed inwardly.

Where is the damn meat?

When she asked the witch earlier about the meat, the woman actually told her that this was Ulva’s instruction. They wanted her to gain weight and be healthier.

Are they fucking raising a cow?

Ava fumed but she said nothing.

Of course, she knew that this is what Kieran meant during their conversation earlier. The witches are targeting Ava. Kieran explained that many witches wanted to be with Matthew. They wanted to swear their allegiance to the next King. However, Matthew refused. The King’s support for Matthew and his blatant favoritism after he discovered that Matthew had a strong bloodline was enough to infuriate a lot of witches.

However, because Matthew’s mother died because of a curse from a witch and a poison made by a witch, the witches actually backed off. They understood Matthew’s unfavorable opinion of them. However, Ava’s presence changed everything.

Matthew actually accepted a witch who knows nothing! She didn’t even have a damn coven or went to a school for witches! This was a great insult!

The fact that Ava was sleeping with Matthew started to spread like wildfire and now, everyone thought that she is this weak-ass skank that they could bully now that Matthew isn’t here.

According to Erenes, before Ava arrived, another rumor started. They said that Ava came here because she wanted to seduce the King.

Ava could only blink, speechless.

Baba didn’t tell her about this rumor. Perhaps it was because Baba thought she wouldn’t care anyway.

Well, Ava doesn’t really care. However, she didn’t expect that other witches would act like this on her first damn night!

They even went as far as lie to her and told her that the King is going to have a private dinner with the Queen!

Kieran also told her another thing that might happen tonight.

She sighed and told Mara to put it all away and bring her some biscuits instead. At least, she didn’t want to sleep hungry!

...

Three hours later

Ava looked at the castle not far away from where she was at. Then she started walking opposite the castle. The letter from Baba told her the direction for the meeting tonight. Along with the direction was a warning. Ava couldn’t leave for more than thirty minutes or they will notice her absence.

The dummy body that was on her bed will wither and the witches will sense the hidden magick in her room.

Ava walked towards the dimly lit road and found the alley where she was supposed to meet someone that would help her tonight.

Ava chanted the spell that Baba included in her letter and almost immediately, her surroundings changed. She blinked.

"You must be Ava," a woman wearing another robe that covered more than half of her face spoke. "I am Clavin, please follow me." Without waiting for her response, the woman walked towards the stairs made of wood and into the second floor of what looked like a small cabin. She followed the woman.

"Mr. Sangray, she’s here."

"Alright. Send her in."

Ava followed the woman into a small study filled with old books and the smell of old paper. She stared at the stacked books and looked at Clavin. She could only see books!

No one—

"Ehem..."

Ava immediately looked at the older man who appeared next to the books. The reason why she couldn’t see the man earlier was that the stack of books on the table was actually taller than him! It covered — no— the right term is dominant.

The books dominated the room, Ava didn’t even notice that there was another person inside. Was this really a study? or a stock room?

"Mr. Sangray..." Ava faked a smile.

"I understand the reaction. This is... my research. Please don’t mind it. Uh... Clavin, find her a chair?"

In response, Clavin rummaged the large books behind Ava and finally found one stool made of wood.

Ava awkwardly sat on the stool and hoped that it wouldn’t give up halfway. freewebnovel-cσ๓

"I know you don’t have much time so I am going to be quick. This research... all of them is about the past King of the Lycans."

Ava watched as the man pointed at stack and stack of books while naming the names of the previous Kings.

"When Babaylan told me that Matthew wanted to... find out everything about the previous King I immediately thought about the records that the grandfathers of my grandfather did. This is a very detailed record of the previous Kings and the reason. All this..." The man sighed. "Are the reason why my family had been removed from the nobles and the council. This is the reason why we were chased and slaughtered and were forced to run and hide like we did something wrong."

"Grandfather— "

"Enough Clavin... Leave us."

"But."

"Now." The older man said. His eyes had turned glassy yet Ava didn’t miss the determination coming from the old man.

"Why would they execute your family?" Ava asked.

"They?" The man snorted. "There was only one person who wanted to execute my Sangray family and that is... the King."

"The King? Why?"

"At first I didn’t know. But someone that I— Someone that I know found out something. And that something got her killed."

Ava frowned. "What is it?"

"She found out that the King... all of them... " The man gulped. "There is a possibility that there was only one King and that he was using the body of the strongest male Lycan as a vessel to extend his life."

"Huh?" Ava frowned, unable to believe what she just heard.

Earlier, Kieran told her that his mother was killed because she discovered something about the current King, about his father.

And this is why Kieran believed that his life is in danger.

Was it possible that— the woman that Mr. Sangray was talking about was Kieran’s mother?
