After following Lady Julliane’s direction, Ava and Matthew found the secret room just underneath the statue.
It had some spells that require the presence of the key. And since Ava already have the key, it only took them a few minutes before they finally arrived in the room where Lady Julliane kept her family treasure.
"This— " Ava gulped at the sight of the things inside the room. Well, it wasn’t exactly a room but a hall. It was a large hall with a dome-like ceiling and walls made of marble and gold. On the floor were golds and various pieces of jewelry. The thing is, it looked like Lady Julliane just decided to dump everything inside without even putting them in safe storage.
"She must have thought that I would never find a mate," Matthew said.
"Reasonable..." Ava picked up a ring with a purple stone near her foot. "It’s enchanted."
An enchanted ring that would protect its owner.
"Erenes used to be one of the witches serving my maternal family. She is familiar with my granduncle and our family’s secrets. However, she was bounded by an oath. That’s why she cannot tell anyone about my family."
"Is that why Elizabeth claimed she grew up with you?" Ava was talking about Erenes’s daughter, Elizabeth.
Matthew nodded at that.
"After my mother died... Erenes worked for my granduncle before she moved to Kieran’s side."
"It was for her daughter," Ava said.
"Yes."
Usually, mothers always make sacrifices for their children. And Erenes was one of them. "Your mother told me about her family’s curse."
Matthew nodded.
"How could it be so— " Ava sighed. She walked towards another pile of enchanted pieces of jewelry. "I don’t understand why no one was able to break the curse."
"It was because it came from a relic."
"A relic?" Ava looked at him. "What relic?" she thought of the deal that she made with Lucas.
"Relics have a purpose..." Matthew said, picking up a rock-like structure from the floor. "Some relics are made to protect, some are intentionally made to store an essence while some are simply made to harm people."
"I have never heard of a relic like that."
Matthew nodded. "The one who owned them would never tell the world about them. They tend to think they could use it to protect themselves from their enemies."
"And they were right. I cannot imagine thinking that my enemies actually have something that could affect my whole bloodline." Ava said. Isn’t that scary? Just thinking about a curse that would affect her grandchildren and their children made her body cold.
"Most of them... have sigils on them. Which means... a soul is inside it just waiting to be unleashed so they could find a vessel."
"Just like you..."
Matthew looked at her as he clenched the rock-like structure on his hand. The rock slowly crumbled until it turned to dust.
"Yes," Matthew said. "Just like me."
Ava looked away.
"What should I do with them?" she asked.
"Up to you. They are yours now. I suggest you take a few items and used them to protect yourself. That ring is good but a little weak. That cloak could hide you from any magick detection device. That— " Matthew started pointing out the things that Ava could use for herself.
Soon, she quickly realized that this place was indeed a treasure trove of stuff that was made by older witches to protect a Lycan from other witches.
Matthew explained that this was because his family was obsessed with protection. This was of course because of the curse. They thought that the curse would somehow make them more vulnerable to attack so they always made sure that they are very well protected as they travel.
To put it simply, Matthew’s maternal family did their best to stay alive.
Sadly, that didn’t work.
Now, Matthew and his granduncle were the only ones who were carrying his maternal family’s bloodline.
"So... the witch who helped your uncle," Ava said after they closed the secret room. Right now, they are going to go back to the cabin.
"She’s not just a witch."
"Hm?"
"Our family could not find her and we believed she was a dream walker. Someone capable of walking through dimensions."
Ava frowned.
A dream walker?
"You must know, dream walkers cannot just walk through dimensions. They can survive in another world. They are resilient and were born very clever." Matthew had his hand on his back as they started walking away from the clearing.
"Really?"
Matthew nodded.
"Can you tell me more about them?" she asked.
"Well... " Matthew hesitated before he said. "There is no point in hiding something that you will know soon. Dream walkers are hereditary. They are usually passed down from the mother of the child."
This information surprised Ava. Even the Shaman didn’t tell her anything about this!
"So you are saying that there’s a possibility — " Ava didn’t continue her words. Question rang inside her head right now. What happened to her mother? If she’s a dream walker then... was it possible that she’s not even inside this realm? Was it possible she just dump Ava before leaving?
Now that she thought about it, Priestess Anna and Matthew’s mother told her that she was not supposed to be in this world! Does that mean she’s from another realm?
"There is that possibility," Matthew said. "But thinking about them without gathering any evidence is useless."
"Evidence..." Ava hasn’t thought of that before.
"I have asked my people to gather everything about you. Sadly, we could not find anything."
"Nothing?" Ava asked.
"Your birth certificate was fake. Even the hospital that claimed you were there when you are a baby does not exist. Your old passports— at least that one that we found were all fakes." Matthew held her hand when she stopped walking.
"Fakes..." Ava uttered. The brutal truth was already in front of her. She recalled her dreams. Her father and Gabriella and the relic that Gabriella left. The dream where she saw her father using magick and the snippets of her past that showed they have been running around since she was but a child.
And now this.
She met Matthew’s eyes as she started to wonder.
Who the hell is she?
