Chapter 31 Rumors Take Flight

Snowflakes are falling outside.

After spending a few days together, Granny Tao roughly knew what kind of person Jiang Shuwan was. Not only was she incredibly intelligent and quick-witted, but she also treated her servants exceptionally well.

So even though she wasn't in the room, Granny Tao still lit two braziers of charcoal so that the little maid inside could keep warm.

At this moment, Granny Tao was leading Chun Jiao and Mei Xue to sit by the brazier and do needlework.

Before Jiang Shuwan returned to the door, she drew two Bugs Bunny on a piece of paper.

After Tao Mama sketched the outline of the pattern on the cloth, she, Chun Jiao, and Mei Xue began to work on it.

Xiao Tao was young and not very good at embroidery, so Granny Tao only let her assist her.

When Jiang Shuwan returned, they had just finished embroidering a pair of rabbit ears.

The wet nurse sat next to the charcoal brazier, roasting peanuts and dried fruit.

A wire mesh was placed on the charcoal brazier, and tea was bubbling on it.

The room was warm and cozy, filled with the aroma of roasted peanuts and dried fruit.

The tea flavor was not strong.

Tea is a precious commodity, although Jiang Shuwan never restricts the wet nurse's food and drink.

But when she wasn't around, the wet nurse was still reluctant to put in too much, only adding some tea flakes.

"Miss."

"Miss, you're back."

As soon as Jiang Shuwan entered, everyone put down what they were doing and came to greet her.

"Sister Qingxing".

"Young lady Qingxing."

Everyone greeted Qingxing.

Granny Tao took the lead and came over to help Jiang Shuwan take off her cloak.

Seeing that Jiang Shuwan's fingers were red from the cold, she quickly asked Xiao Tao to go to the storeroom and get another hand warmer.

"Where's your hand warmer, Miss? Did you forget it at your parents' house?"

"It's given to the young master," Qingxing replied to Granny Tao.

She was cold too, so she went to warm herself by the fire while looking at the rabbits that Chun Jiao and Mei Xue embroidered.

"Hahaha, what kind of rabbit is this? It looks like a bear."

Qingxing held the drawings Jiang Shuwan had made and laughed until her stomach hurt.

Jiang Shuwan: =_= Bugs Bunny is a big star, how dare you say he looks like a bear?

Meanwhile, the wet nurse had already prepared some good tea and put it on the stove to boil.

The water would boil in a little while, so the wet nurse poured a cup of hot water for Jiang Shuwan to drink.

The hot water was neither too hot nor too cold; the temperature was just right.

"Thank you, Nanny." The girl smiled and, while drinking water, asked Qingxing to get some oranges to roast together.

"After eating too many roasted peanuts, the wet nurse gets thirsty, so she eats an orange to sweeten her mouth."

"No need to worry, no need to worry," the wet nurse said cheerfully.

The oranges were roasted until fragrant, but she didn't eat much of them, breaking the flesh into segments.

She cleaned up all the white pith from the oranges, placing them on a plate.

Jiang Shuwan likes to sit by the charcoal brazier, warming herself by the fire while peeling and eating oranges.

Then she gave the oranges that the wet nurse had arranged to stand upright to Qingxing.

"Thank you, Miss, thank you, Nanny." Qingxing smiled so broadly her eyes disappeared.

The wet nurse was all smiles.

She watched Qingxing grow up. She was a tiny orphan, barely four or five years old and not even as tall as a table, when she was taken to the Jiang family by the matchmaker.

The masters of the various courtyards in the Jiang family thought she was too young to do anything, so in the end, Jiang Shuwan kept her on.

So many years have passed in the blink of an eye. Qingxing has grown up and can now take good care of Jiang Shuwan.

My personality has become more lively, though I'm still a bit of a rascal.

Right now, he's laughing at Bugs Bunny's ugly appearance while eating an orange.

Suddenly, a maidservant came to report that the headmistress of the sewing room had arrived.

"Greetings to the young mistress." As soon as the needlework nanny entered, she saw that every maid and nanny in the room had an orange in their hand.

The needlework aunt was quite surprised.

Oranges are so precious these days that even the third and fourth wives are reluctant to eat many, yet everyone in the young mistress's room has one?

They even have maids?

Could it be that the old lady really loves this?

The seamstress swallowed hard, her words changing as she tried to speak.

"Replying to the young mistress, yesterday the young mistress asked Qingxing to bring a piece of Shu brocade and asked us to finish a garment in ten days. This was originally too late, as there are only about ten maids and servants in the sewing room, and they are all busy with their own work."

"Moreover, the pattern of the young mistress's clothes is very complicated. Even with three maids, it would take at least a month to make them. However, since the young mistress has given the order, I dare not neglect it. I have specially assigned five maids to put aside their original work and make the young mistress's clothes first."

"It's just that I might not be able to make it in time. I'm just letting you know now, young mistress, in case I don't make it and it delays your business."

What she originally wanted to say was that the sewing shop couldn't handle this job.

However, the bright yellow tangerines were dazzling.

Then, recalling the rumors that had suddenly spread throughout the manor about how much the old lady loved it and how much the young master loved it, her words changed completely as soon as they reached her lips.

Of course, she didn't say for sure whether the work could be completed on time. The fact that she could send five maids to make clothes for Jiang Shuwan as a new bride was already a great honor for her.

She wasn't this attentive when Lady Wen first entered the manor.

"Hmm." Jiang Shuwan nodded lightly, not even glancing at the needlework nanny, and simply told Granny Tao to give her a reward.

The seamstress, carrying the heavy red envelope, left, thanking the seamstress profusely.

They sighed, marveling that the young mistress was indeed as the servants had described—extremely arrogant, completely disregarding them, the lowly stewards.

Upon opening the red envelope, they found it was full of gold and silver ingots.

Masters in the mansion often reward their servants with gold or silver ingots, but usually only one or two.

Who's going to tip me with a whole bag of gold and silver ingots?

The young mistress is so extravagant!

The needlework aunt was terrified.

Needlework Granny: I feel like I can still squeeze out one maid to make clothes for the young mistress.

Little did she know that Jiang Shuwan had several boxes in her room, all of which were betrothal gifts prepared by the Wen family.

On the other side, Jiang Shuwan was also thinking about something.
