Chapter 7 Getting Married

"It's out!"

"We've really struck it rich!"

Looking at the room full of dowry, Jiang Shuwan felt like she had struck it rich.

Her dowry in her previous life was pitifully small, but in this life it's piled up to fill a whole house.

Even more delightful was that her only friend from her past life, Sun Wanwan, came to visit her.

"Wanwan, I heard you're engaged to the heir of Marquis Wenyuan?"

"That's wonderful! I've heard that the young master is a man of great literary talent and is very polite and reasonable."

"I was worried before that Madam Song would take advantage of your lack of support and not properly find you a marriage partner, but now it's all good, you've found a perfect match with the heir."

The girl who entered the room had delicate features and spoke softly, making her seem easy to bully.

They are indeed quite easy to bully.

Jiang Shuwan was so angry she wanted to grind her teeth.

"Wanwan, why do I feel like you're a little angry?" Sun Wanwan trembled with fear when she saw her eyebrows raised.

Jiang Shuwan is terrifying when she's angry; anyone who makes her angry will be in big trouble.

But she hadn't provoked her.

Sun Wanwan pouted, looking somewhat aggrieved.

Jiang Shuwan raised her hand and poked her forehead hard. Sun Wanwan's forehead immediately turned red. She felt wronged and tears welled up in her eyes, but she didn't dare to dodge.

Seeing her like this, Jiang Shuwan's anger subsided considerably.

Ultimately, she was angrier at herself than at Sun Wanwan.

Sun Wanwan was born into the Sun family, a family of loyal and virtuous men who held considerable military power and were a true family of generals.

They met at a poetry gathering, where everyone's attention was on Jiang Yao, this talented woman.

I don't know what Sun Wanwan was thinking. As the eldest daughter of a general's mansion, instead of hanging out with the daughters of other noble families, she's sticking close to me.

In her previous life, Jiang Shuwan was not actually familiar with her.

She's become so lazy that she doesn't even want to make friends anymore. She stays home every day, eating, drinking, having fun, and sleeping in late.

It was only through Sun Wanwan's repeated visits to the Jiang residence to play that the two of them became somewhat acquainted.

The only time they truly opened their hearts to each other was when she was engaged to the Earl's family in her previous life.

At the time, everyone thought that she had gotten lucky by marrying into the Earl's family because of Jiang Yao's good fortune.

Only Sun Wanwan felt that she was "Jiang Yao's substitute" and that she would not be happy if she married into the family. Not only did she secretly wipe away her tears, but she also gave her money to keep her safe.

She married into the Earl's family, and the two families maintained contact.

Later, Sun Wanwan got engaged. Originally, it was supposed to be the eldest son of a military officer, but somehow she married the second son of a civil official.

The second son is handsome and polite; he seems like a good person.

Later, the Sun family suffered misfortune; Sun's father was demoted, and his second son failed the imperial examinations repeatedly.

Seeing that his father-in-law's family had no support and that Sun Wanwan was soft and easily bullied, he cruelly poisoned her and married another woman.

The thought of all this made Jiang Shuwan grit her teeth in hatred.

Sun Wanwan's marriage was a major event in her life. She had originally favored the eldest son of the military officer, and Sun Wanwan also thought he was a good match. There must be a reason for her sudden marriage to someone else.

Then, the Sun family's misfortune came very suddenly, without any prior warning...

Or perhaps there were rumors, but as a woman confined to her quarters, these rumors simply didn't reach her ears.

The Sun family probably felt that she, a woman confined to the inner quarters, couldn't be of much help, so they didn't say anything.

In this life, she is determined to find out the truth about Sun Wanwan's sudden remarriage and prevent her from repeating the same mistake.

She also needed to keep a close eye on the court's movements, in case something happened to the Sun family and she was still unaware of it.

"Okay, okay, don't be angry anymore. Look what I brought you."

Seeing that she was angry, Sun Wanwan presented a stack of silver notes as if they were a treasure.

Two thousand taels in total.

Sun Wanwan proudly showed off the silver notes.

“Now that you’re marrying into the Marquis’s mansion, you need a dowry to make a good impression. My mother says that a small silver note won’t make anyone realize how rich your dowry is or give you any special treatment. It should be decorated with fine silks and satins and displayed on ten high tables to make it look impressive. I think so too. But after thinking about it for a while, my mother felt that no matter what kind of fine silks and satins you use, nothing is as practical as silver. It’s readily available and very convenient.”

"After all, we can't expect you to pawn your silk when you urgently need money and then come back to do your job."

“Your mother is right. Please thank your aunt for me.”

In her previous life, Sun Wanwan said almost the same thing.

It is said that she married into the Earl's mansion because she was Jiang Yao's older sister, and the Earl's wife asked her to be a "substitute".

If she's having a hard time, this money can be used to keep her safe and readily available.

Jiang Shuwan knew, of course, that silver was the only hard currency. When a dowry made of silver was pawned because she didn't have enough money, the price would often be reduced by half.

Only banknotes do not depreciate.

Jiang Shuwan thanked Madam Sun for her kind words, and the sisters chatted for a while before leaving.

After seeing Sun Wanwan off, it was time for the wedding.

Jiang Shuwan was dragged out of bed in the middle of the night by the matchmaker and the wedding attendant. She was made up, dressed, and made up. She was busy until noon, the auspicious time, when the Marquis's mansion came to pick her up.

She lay on her half-brother's back, being carried away step by step.

Suddenly a gust of wind swept in, lifting a corner of the red veil, and Jiang Shuwan saw that Jiang Yao in the next courtyard was also getting married.

It was also carried by his half-brother, but there were only a few musicians playing instruments and singing, and they played without much effort, appearing lazy and lacking any festive atmosphere.

Unlike her courtyard full of musicians, whose music was so loud it seemed the entire capital could hear it.

Jiang Yao's dowry was also meager, consisting of only twenty taels, plus the sixty taels given by the Earl's Mansion, for a total of eighty taels.

She has 160 units here.

Compared to Jiang Yao, it's doubled.

Jiang's father and Song's wife were also in her courtyard seeing her off on her wedding day.

Song stared longingly at the courtyard where Jiang Yao was to be married, her eyes red and swollen. The handkerchief in her hand was torn to shreds, but she dared not take a single step forward because of the authority of Jiang's father.

The saying that "marriages of marquises are held with great fanfare, while marriages of earls are held with less fanfare" is not just a joke.

Whether it's the dowry, the people who escorted her, or the musicians they hired, Jiang Yao's standards were only half of Jiang Shuwan's.

Jiang Yao was very unhappy about this. A gust of wind lifted her red veil, and she saw Jiang Shuwan.

Looking at the scale of Jiang Shuwan's wedding and then at the scale of her own, she was filled with jealousy, but it was quickly replaced by joy.

She must be thinking of Pei Lingyu, Jiang Shuwan thought, but she didn't have time to think about anything else right away.

After getting into the bridal sedan chair, there were other things to do, such as getting out of the sedan chair and the wedding ceremony.

By the time the ceremony was completed and she was led to the bridal chamber, Jiang Shuwan was starving.

The servants were all in the courtyard; only Jiang Shuwan and Qingxing were inside the house.

Ignoring Qingxing's attempts to stop her, Jiang Shuwan directly pulled off her red veil and ate several pieces of pastry with her tea.

Suddenly, I heard the sound of women arguing.

"How dare you! What do you think the Earl's mansion is, a place where you can run wild? These are all the Earl's property, how dare you move them? Don't you have a death wish?"
