Chapter 184 Grain Harvesting

In early autumn, the vast farmlands are ablaze with gold.

A gentle breeze, hot and dry, propelled the combine harvesters into a thunderous roar as they rolled across the sorghum fields from east to west, marching triumphantly and singing the main melody of the autumn harvest.

After Jiang Hexi unloaded all the sorghum grains into the warehouse, he drove the truck back to the field.

She hummed a song with a cheerful mood, completely disregarding the feelings of the people on the walkie-talkie, freely expressing her joy at the harvest:

Hehe, hehe, hehe; hehe, hehe, hehe.

Today we are together, Gesangla, let's dance the joyful Guozhuang, Gesangla!

May we all be happy, may we all be blessed, Gesangla.

The upbeat rhythm was perfectly fitting, but paired with her captivating voice... the people on the same channel were finding it hard to handle.

Shen Yingyu: "Ximei, I'll let you go first at the fork in the road. You can line up in front of me to load the grain later."

"There's always work to be done, and I don't want to be ahead of you in line."

After Jiang Hexi finished speaking, she started singing again from the beginning, "Hehe, hehe, hehe; hehe, hehe, hehe."

Chu Yang spoke up plaintively, "Sister, why do you keep repeating the same few lines over and over? Can you please stop this endless loop and keep singing?"

"There's nothing I can do, these are the only few phrases I know."

As Jiang Hexi drove the grain unloading truck, bouncing along the muddy road, she hummed along, keeping pace with the truck's ups and downs:

"Today we are together, Gesangla, let's dance the joyful Guozhuang, Gesangla..."

Yu Xiangwan picked up the walkie-talkie and shouted at Yan Jie:

"The guy standing there directing and coordinating things, Xi Mei has listened to this song on repeat more than ten times, aren't you going to say anything or do anything about it?"

"I personally think it sounds great."

Yan Jie paused for a moment, then added, "This voice is comparable to heavenly music."

Jiang Hexi was greatly encouraged and hummed even louder: "May we all be happy, may we all be blessed, Gesangla!"

Xie Wanyi stood up for Yu Xiangwan and launched a scathing attack on Yan Jie:

"Those in power are inactive, and nobody cares, right? Then let's hurt each other! Da Yu, Chu Yang, Wan Wan, three, two, one, let's sing together—"

The four of them had long been corrupted by Jiang Hexi's singing, and they sang along in unison, completely familiar with it:

"Hehe, hehe, hehe; hehe, hehe, hehe—!"

Isn't this so joyful? This background music, "Gesangla," is perfectly suited to the joy of a bountiful harvest!

[@Anonymous Director Chen, can you even copy homework? I've already found the background music for this episode's variety show for you, remember to add it.]

[Xi Mei's selections are always top-notch. I just listened to this song, and it's so catchy!]

[“Madness” is contagious. It started with only one person singing in a mesmerizing way, but it spread to four, and the entire walkie-talkie was filled with the maddening sound...]

[Does the person upstairs even know? The King of Hell calls this heavenly music, hahahahaha—]

Harvesting sorghum is different from harvesting wheat; it is much slower. A single harvester can only harvest 40 mu (approximately 2.6 acres) of sorghum per day.

The 600 mu of sorghum were harvested in five days and stored in a warehouse.

The team leader extracted some samples from the sorghum warehouse and sent them to the research center for testing.

The lab results will take a day to arrive, and then the electronic report will be available.

Jiang Hexi was restless in the living room.

She counted down the minutes, barely getting through them. She had no appetite for anything, no interest in anything, and was trapped in a deep anxiety from which she could not escape.

Apart from her, the others weren't much better off.

Chu Yang kept drinking water and going to the toilet repeatedly, in a never-ending cycle.

Yu Xiangwan found a crochet hook and yarn from somewhere and sat on the sofa to start knitting a scarf. She kept making mistakes and unraveling the yarn to start over. After most of the day, she hadn't managed to come up with any fancy designs.

The other three men sat around the tea table drinking tea, from morning to afternoon, and only drank three pots of tea in total.

Finally, Jiang Hexi couldn't hold back any longer and suddenly stood up from her chair.

"I really can't take it anymore. I'm going to wait for the results at the entrance of the research center. Anyone want to come with me?"

"Sister, I'll go with you."

Chu Yang was the first and only person to respond to her.

The two hurriedly walked out, and when they started the van to drive away, the remaining four people came over one after another, opened the van door, and squeezed into the van one by one.

Jiang Hexi glanced at them disdainfully in the rearview mirror, started the car, and drove towards the city in the chilly autumn wind.

When the group arrived at the research center, the test results were not yet available.

They each sat on a bench outside the laboratory.

Whenever a researcher in white walked by, they all looked up in unison, their eyes sweeping over the person until they disappeared from sight, at which point they all looked away and continued to wait.

Such a massive undertaking forced the laboratory researchers to prioritize testing their sorghum in order to obtain the test results as soon as possible and give them an explanation.

Jiang Hexi's anxiety was only slightly relieved when she heard Shen Yingyu repeatedly calculating the profits from the sorghum.

"Da Yu, calculate the profits again, I want to hear it."

Shen Yingyu patiently explained:

"We planted 600 mu of sorghum. If the average yield is 600 jin per mu, and the winery is currently offering an average price of 2.15 yuan, how much is that?"

"I'm too lazy to calculate, just tell me."

"Seven hundred and seventy-four thousand."

This number is enough to comfort every farmer present.

Jiang Hexi sat on the bench, pressed her palms together against her forehead, and began to pray devoutly.

The laboratory door was pushed open with a creak, and she stood up reflexively.

"Is it...it's out yet?"

"The results for the project called 'The Five Tycoons' Sorghum Field' are in."

The researcher, holding the freshly printed lab report, felt immense pressure as he noticed everyone sitting on the bench sitting upright, their eyes fixed intently on him.

"Do you want to hear the best possible test results, or the worst?"

Yan Jie said calmly, "The worst possible outcome."

The researchers pulled out a second sheet and read it aloud:

"Sampling results for sample No. 02: The red sorghum has qualified color, aroma and appearance. The moisture content of the sorghum is 15.1%, the glutinousness is 97.3%, the imperfection rate is 0.7%, and the standard rate of impurities is 0.87%. It meets the grain acceptance standards of the winery. Congratulations."

Chu Yang exclaimed in surprise and jumped up from the bench. Realizing his lapse in composure, he quickly covered his mouth and threw himself into Shen Yingyu's arms.

Yu Xiangwan leaned against the wall, laughing uncontrollably.

Only Jiang Hexi stood quietly in the aisle, without moving.

Yan Jie saw that her hands were tightly clenched together. He walked behind her, raised his hand to stroke her short hair, and said comfortingly:

"Okay, stop crying."

She lowered her head, and two streams of hot tears fell to the ground.
