Chapter 7 One Cut and Gone



Yan Jie knocked on the door and went in. He asked the old lady for six servings of soy milk and six servings of steamed buns. After paying, he went out to the door and leaned against half of the door, waiting patiently.

"Aren't you tired of having cameras shoved right in your face every day?"

"bother."

Jiang Hexi picked up a low stool and sat under the eaves, saying frankly, "But I can't shake them off."

Yan Jie glanced at the deep, narrow alley, where moss covered half of the walls, revealing the marks of age.

"That evening, I went out to catch chickens and shook off the cameraman behind me. I wandered around here for a bit."

"And then you found this breakfast shop?"

"Yeah, I came here by the smell."

Yan Jie took the soy milk and steamed buns from the old lady and placed them on the folding table.

Jiang Hexi sipped the freshly made soy milk, feeling warm and comforted in her stomach. She then ate two small steamed buns with thin skins and generous fillings, her smiling eyes shimmering with endless brilliance.

"The soy milk is smooth and creamy, and the steamed buns are fragrant but not greasy. They're delicious."

"Don't you even know whose taste this is?"

Time passed very slowly; the morning light lingered on the wall, motionless for a long time.

After they put down their chopsticks, the film crew finally came over.

Yan Jie handed the packed breakfast to the director and said without ceremony, "Please take this to the village chief and the others, thank you."

The director did not reach out to take it.

Yan Jie threatened, "If you don't want to help, that's fine. I can find time to go myself. I don't know if you'll be able to keep up then."

Left with no other choice, the director accepted the breakfast and watched the two drive away in their tricycle, their smug, satisfied backs looking utterly arrogant.
