Chapter 74 Heartbeat

After spreading quicklime in the three ponds, Jiang Hexi rode his electric bike, carrying a drone, to the wheat field to work.

Chu Yang stood in the field waiting for her. When he saw her coming from afar, he raised his hand and called out, "Sister, I'm here."

Jiang Hexi slammed on the brakes, abruptly stopping the car ten centimeters in front of him, and asked him aggressively:

Where did you run off to?

"bathroom."

"Who goes to the toilet during the day and doesn't come back for forty minutes?"

"constipate."

Seeing how shameless he was, Jiang Hexi was completely impressed: "Let me ask you, do you know that there is a fully automated operation mode for agricultural drones?"

Chu Yang took out the crumpled instruction manual, flipped to the last page, and said innocently:

"Sis, there's something wrong with the layout of this instruction manual. What kind of drone manufacturer would put the most important fully automated operation mode at the end? I'll complain about them when I have time."

Jiang Hexi was careless; she shouldn't have insisted on operating the drone, letting Chu Yang point fingers at her with the instruction manual.

Yan Jie brought over a truckload of fertilizer and parked the van in front of the two of them.

He glanced briefly out the car window.

Chu Yang immediately understood his meaning and took the initiative to unpack the fertilizer and put it into the drone's medicine box.

Yan Jie got out of the car and gave Jiang Hexi a hands-on demonstration of how to operate the drone. After confirming that everything was in order, he picked up his coat, walked to the grass under the banyan tree, and fell asleep immediately.

After Jiang Hexi got the hang of operating the drone, he called Chu Yang over and taught him how to use it step by step.

As the midday sun grew stronger, the two men got into the van, enjoying the air conditioning while watching the drones automatically spread fertilizer over the wheat field.

Chu Yang: "Sister, I'll stay here to pack the medicine box. Go check on Brother, don't let him get heatstroke while he's sleeping there."

Jiang Hexi: "Can a person faint from heatstroke while asleep?"

"After suffering from heatstroke, he becomes unconscious, just like he's asleep. Only when you get there can you tell whether he has heatstroke or just falls asleep."

Chu Yang's astonishing conclusion left Jiang Hexi completely bewildered.

After thinking it over, she realized that what he said made a lot of sense.

As Chu Yang filled her water bottle and installed the fan, he kept muttering to himself:

“My brothers have been working very hard these past few days. Several times they have returned from meetings at the village chief’s house at 1 a.m., and then they have to get up early the next day to go to the village committee to assign tasks.”

Jiang Hexi took the bag he handed her, opened the car door, and said:

"I'll go check on him."

After the midday sun has passed, a warm breeze begins to rise, the wheat fields ripple, and the leaves at the top of the banyan tree rustle.

When Yan Jie woke up and opened his eyes, he was met with dappled sunlight filtering through the rustling leaves. He turned his head, and after a moment of dizziness, he saw the profile of Jiang Hexi sitting in the wind.

That was the feeling of an electric shock running through my whole body after being bluntly struck.

She simply sat with her knees drawn up to her chest under the banyan tree. The wind rippled through the wheat fields, gently caressing her fallen hair. Although her face was covered in lime and looked ashen, her eyes were endlessly captivating.

The cicadas chirped softly, and the heatwave raged, but nothing could compare to the intense heat burning within his chest.

It was an ordinary afternoon, nothing out of the ordinary.

In this boundless wilderness, at the cusp of summer, all those undercurrents of emotion converge into the blood flowing through my veins—

Yan Jie had never been so clear about his own feelings; he liked Jiang Hexi.

A sudden chill ran down his spine. He snapped out of his daze and looked up at her: "Why did you come here?"

"Chu Yang was worried you'd get heatstroke, so he sent me to keep watch over you."

Jiang Hexi took back the electric fan and blew it loudly at herself. "Then I realized that this place is the ventilation shaft of the entire wilderness, so I stayed here and refused to leave."

"Aren't you going to apply fertilizer to the wheat anymore?"

"Watching Chu Yang apply fertilizer is more satisfying than operating a drone to spread fertilizer myself."

Yan Jie straightened up and sat up directly from the grass, asking her, "Are you sleepy?"

"What?"

Yan Jie said frankly, "If you're sleepy, you can lie down here for a while."

Jiang Hexi blew the electric fan into his face and said, "I'm not sleepy. I'm watching Chu Yang sow fertilizer, and I'm really enjoying it."

Seeing that she quickly took the small fan back, Yan Jie discovered an astonishing fact:

She would blow a small electric fan at herself for twenty seconds before sparing him ten seconds.

Suddenly, a loudspeaker on the utility pole started blaring.

The village chief, speaking in somewhat broken Mandarin, addressed everyone in Canglang Village:

"Hello, this is the village chief. I have something to announce to the public."

"The village committee and the farming variety show have joined forces to hold a banquet for thousands of families during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday. Thousands of tourists will visit our Canglang Village at that time. The village committee is urgently recruiting temporary workers such as chefs, vegetable cutters, and cleaners. Those who are interested can register at the village committee."

"Let me make this clear from the start: the Thousand Family Banquet is crucial to the future development of Canglang Village. Anyone who dares to disgrace our village in this matter will be making an enemy of the entire village, and don't blame us for not tolerating them in the future!"

"If this Thousand Families Banquet is a success and makes money, we can hold it every year and profit every year. Everyone, let's work together as one and make sure our Canglang Village tourism brand shines brightly!"

The broadcast has now ended.

Jiang Hexi asked Yan Jie guiltily, "What if we lose money?"

Yan Jie only glanced at her briefly, and she immediately changed her tune:
