Chapter 13 Going Home

Jiang Wenjing stood in the pouring rain, holding a black straight umbrella. When he saw Jiang Hexi, he almost didn't recognize her as his sister.

Wearing black rubber slippers, with rolled-up trouser cuffs, and a layer of dust stuck to her short-sleeved shirt, she leaned against the door, looking disheveled, holding a shovel in her hand, ready to be called over to work at any moment.

Jiang Wenjing was heartbroken, as if he had seen his own stray kitten, all dirty and wagging its tail at him, begging for mercy. He wished he could take it home immediately.

He went up the steps, but she stopped him with a voice:

"Don't come any closer. You're all wet. Don't make the wheat we dried overnight damp. Stand under the eaves."

Jiang Wenjing strode over to her, closed his umbrella, and stood on the outer porch, smiling at her affectionately:

"I haven't seen my second brother for so long, and he's so fierce to me as soon as we meet."

Jiang Hexi has always been vengeful. When she was sent here to farm, she turned to him with great hope, but he turned off his phone.

What are you doing here?

Jiang Wenjing said frankly, "My second brother has come to take you home."

"Wait, I don't have time for you right now."

Jiang Hexi said this, picked up his shovel, and walked towards the pile of wheat.

Jiang Wenjing was ordered to stand outside, unable to chase after her or persuade her, and dared not anger her any further. He had no choice but to stand on the outer corridor and wait for two hours.

After finishing work, Jiang Hexi didn't even change her clothes. After saying goodbye to everyone, she got into the Bentley, looking disheveled, and told the driver to drive.

The car drove smoothly on the road.

Jiang Wenjing kept asking her how she was doing, "Little sister, you've been away from home for so long, have you missed it?"

"In no mood."

Jiang Hexi yawned and said, "I'm exhausted from farming every day, and when I get home I just collapse into bed. How can I have time to miss home?"

Hearing this, Jiang Wenjing felt extremely uncomfortable. "What do you want to eat for lunch? When we get to the city, your second brother will take you to eat something delicious."

"No need to trouble you, Second Brother, just give me three eggs."

Jiang Hexi was so sleepy that she could barely lift her eyelids. She mumbled, "I was too busy feeding the chickens at noon, so I just ate whatever was available to get by."

Jiang Wenjing was so heartbroken that she couldn't speak.

He knew she was having a hard time in the countryside, but he never expected that she wouldn't even have enough to eat. What's wrong with this production team? They have no sense at all. As one of the financial backers behind the scenes, how could the Jiang family treat their financial backer's daughter like this?

"Little sister, your second brother will definitely avenge you. If the production team dares to starve you, your second brother will make sure their whole family is eating dirt. We'd rather not participate in this lousy show!"

“I’ll stand up for Mom. I’m sorry I couldn’t speak up for you last time. No matter how strong Mom is this time, I won’t back down.”

“You’ve always been a pampered girl, how could you have ever suffered like this? Even if Mom cuts off your financial support in the future, it doesn’t matter, your second brother will take care of you.”

After Jiang Wenjing finished speaking his heartfelt words, Jiang Hexi did not respond at all. He turned his head and saw that she was lying on the back seat with her head tilted to the side, fast asleep.

His eyes welled up with tears. How could the little girl be so pitiful? Did the production team have no humanity? How could they torture her like this?!

Jiang Hexi slept fitfully the whole way.

She went to sleep at two in the morning and got up at seven in the morning. After that, she was busy drying wheat. After leaving Canglang Village, the tightly wound spring was released, and she was so sleepy that she completely lost consciousness.

They didn't even know how they boarded the plane or when they arrived in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

"Little sister, wake up, we're home."

"Ah Xi, eat before you sleep, don't ruin your health by starving yourself."

"Jiang Hexi, wake up, get up."

As soon as Ms. Zhou spoke, Jiang Hexi woke up reflexively. She looked at her parents standing outside the car door in a daze and said in a coquettish tone, "Dad, Mom, I'm back."

"It's good that you're back," Ms. Zhou said, forcing back her heartache as she looked at her disheveled village girl appearance. "Sister Song has prepared hot water in the bathtub. Go up and wash up quickly, and then come down for dinner."

Jiang Hexi obediently agreed.

In the bedroom, she leaned back in the bathtub, taking a long-awaited hot bath, while Ms. Zhou's concerned voices echoed from outside the door:

"Ah-Xi, are you wearing a silk nightgown or a two-piece cotton nightgown?"

"A silk nightgown."

"Is your hair dry? Do you want Mom to come in and blow-dry it for you?"

"I've covered it with a hair drying cap, no need for that."

"And what about scrubbing yourself in the bath?"

"No, your daughter is perfectly clean."

Jiang Hexi declined Ms. Zhou's offer, her legs leisurely shaking off the water. The reason she dressed so sloppily to go home was that she wanted her family to treat her well.

Ms. Zhou, in particular, was very pleased with Ms. Zhou's attentiveness towards her.

A sumptuous meal was laid out on a table in the living room.

As soon as Jiang Hexi sat down, her family members started eating and kept piling food into her bowl. Before she could even take two bites, the food in her bowl was piled up like a small mountain.

"Dad, why isn't my older brother home?"

“Your older brother went to England to discuss business and won’t be back for three or four months. Before he left, he said he would finish his work as soon as possible and come back to see you soon.”

Jiang Hexi said considerately, "Big brother's business is important, it's okay if he can't come back in time."

"When will your variety show air?" Ms. Zhou asked, putting down her chopsticks.

"It's still in post-production editing and can't be broadcast for now."

"The first episode will air this Saturday."

Two voices rang out one after the other.

Jiang Hexi glared at Jiang Wenjing, who interrupted her, and blamed him for being nosy and saying whatever came to mind.

Ms. Zhou instructed, "Wen Jing, tell your older brother that if he can't make it back, he should watch the program and check on his sister."

"mom--"

Jiang Hexi was unwilling to contribute to the show's ratings; she hoped the variety show would be ignored.

"My brother is so busy, let's not bother him. Besides, this show isn't very interesting, so it doesn't matter whether we watch it or not."

"That won't do! This is your first variety show appearance!"

Jiang's father, deeply concerned for his daughter, said, "Not only will your older brother want to watch, but Dad will also organize the entire company to support you. Whether the show is good or not is not important; the key is to give you the respect you deserve as a young lady."

Jiang Wenjing chimed in, "I've already notified the publicity department to start the pre-broadcast promotion. On the day the show airs on satellite TV, we'll release a notice and promote it extensively. In terms of fan support, your star power is definitely no less than that of a top-tier celebrity."

Jiang Hexi is about to die in front of them:

"No publicity allowed. It's one thing for the production team to abuse me, but how can you help them bully me? This show deserves to be unwatched; it's a fitting reward for all the suffering I've endured."

Ms. Zhou knew the father and son harbored resentment towards the production team, so she gave them a look, letting them understand on their own, while verbally offering words of comfort:

"Let's not talk about these things at the dinner table, let's eat."

Seeing that they started putting food into her bowl again, Jiang Hexi barely calmed down.

Ms. Zhou suggested, "How about I take you to a spa tomorrow, and we'll also buy some clothes and jewelry, and have your favorite Western food?"

Jiang Hexi's mood immediately improved. "Mom, I'll listen to you."
