Chapter 14: Rest
For a moment, the situation was tense. Duke and his companions, knowing full well how difficult Joan was to deal with, stood still for a moment, their faces tense.
Joan took in their fear and sneered, saying with disdain, "What? Are you scared? If you're itching to get your ass kicked, I'm always here to help."
The little guy behind Duke tremblingly reached out his hand, pulled Duke back, and carefully persuaded him: "Duke, let's go first, don't..."
Duke was furious after hearing such cowardly words. He impatiently shook off the other person's hand and said stubbornly, "...Joan Davis, you'll have to take care of yourself!"
"I think you should take care of yourself, right? Duke, what you just did was not unheard of." After a long silence, Corris spoke coldly, staring at Duke with sharp eyes.
Hearing this, Duke's face suddenly turned red as liver. He couldn't understand why Curris's temperament changed so drastically after a vacation... But compared to Joan, Duke still had the courage to say a few harsh words to Curris.
"Chris, you crashed a plane and got yourself into a trance, didn't you? You even dared to mess with me?" Duke threatened Chris sinisterly, "I remember very clearly how timid you were before..."
"Have you said enough? I'll count to three, one..." Joan was in no mood to continue arguing with them. She rudely interrupted Duke's harsh words and directly issued an ultimatum. At the same time, she seemed to take a step towards Duke casually.
"Two--" Joan drew out her voice, with the corners of her mouth slightly raised. She raised her foot slowly and continued to move forward.
Her tactical boots made no sound as they stepped on the floor, but it was enough to set off alarm bells in the hearts of the people on the opposite side, causing them to be completely defeated.
Just as Joan was about to count to three, Duke quickly glanced back at the few minions behind him who were about to cry. He sighed and reluctantly ordered a retreat: "A bunch of useless people, you're scared already... Go!"
Only when Duke and his group completely disappeared from sight did Chris breathe a sigh of relief. If Joan hadn't suddenly appeared, this incident might not have ended well.
He glanced at Joan who was still standing steadily, then tilted his head and glanced at the boy behind him. After confirming that he was okay, he decided to thank Joan for her help first.
"Hello, Joan... Thank you very much for being willing to stand up and help." Chris was not sure what to say, so he had to observe Joan's expression while slowly organizing his words.
Joan didn't comment, but just glanced at Chris and the boy behind him calmly, and nodded slightly, indicating that she had heard it.
Without saying anything else, she strode out of the rest area. Now, only Chris and the trembling boy were left in the rest area.
Finally, Chris was able to speak alone with the victim of Duke's bullying. He leaned down slightly, raised his hands to his chest, and showed that he meant no harm. "Are you okay? Do you need me to take you to the school hospital?"
"No, no... no thanks!" Hearing Kris' question, the thin boy became even more terrified, stepping back repeatedly and lowering his head even more. He seemed to be afraid of going to the school hospital, and directly rejected Kris's kindness, stumbling out of the rest area.
Chris was a little confused. He looked at the other person's panicked back and shook his head helplessly. He guessed that the other person must have been too frightened and couldn't react for a while... Chris sighed and recalled what Duke had said.
The original owner seemed indifferent to the verbal bullying of Duke and his group, but what his true state of mind was, Chris had no way of knowing from his remaining memories.
Curris knew Duke wouldn't give up. The only thing he could do now was to improve his self-protection capabilities and preserve evidence if he encountered such a situation again. In short, he had to fight back.
After all this commotion, Chris couldn't eat anymore. He put away the remaining energy bars and his terminal and prepared to go to the basic training area.
The basic training area is further divided into a physical fitness enhancement area and a weapons and equipment area. Knowing that the original owner's physical fitness was not very good, Corris decided to start with physical training.
After changing into his training suit, Chris walked around the fitness area, occasionally trying out the various machines. In the end, he dejectedly chose the simplest machine.
Following the voice instructions in the tiny headset, Chris began to exercise arduously. Less than twenty minutes later, Chris was so tired that he began to breathe heavily.
Although the body before traveling through time wasn't much better, the original owner's body was so bad that it must have been infuriating!
As time went by, Kris's face was covered with sweat, which wet his hair and dripped into his eyes... His own rapid breathing could be heard in his ears, and his brain was overloaded and unable to function normally.
The health monitoring system issued a warning, reminding him to stop. Chris did not dare to joke with his own body and immediately suspended his training.
He sat on the ground carelessly, took the towel handed to him by the robotic arm, and casually wiped the sweat off his face. He felt a sense of relief at surviving a disaster, but also sadness about his poor physical condition.
"You are quite weak." Just as Corris's breathing was gradually calming down, a familiar female voice suddenly sounded not far away, scaring him so much that he almost couldn't breathe again.
Chris looked in the direction of the voice and saw a subtle, playful smile on Joan Davis's face. Chris knew that Joan had seen his embarrassing exercise clearly, and he was immediately embarrassed.
"I didn't mean to disturb you, it's just that the intelligent system said that someone here needs help..." Before Qiong finished speaking, her smile became increasingly uncontrollable.
Chris's face flushed crimson, he didn't know if it was due to embarrassment or over-exercise. He didn't know how to respond to Joan, so he just hesitated, scratched his head, and avoided the question: "Oh...really? Everything is fine on my side, haha..."
"That's good... I thought someone was going to faint here." Joan saw through Kris's stubbornness and looked at him with a look of pity, but there was a little more interest in her eyes: "What's your name? Krisnar, right?"
"When I saw you being so tough against Duke just now, I thought you were a good fighter..." Joan showed a look of regret and shrugged.
Chris's eyes darted around in embarrassment, and he gave a dry laugh. Although Joan's words were direct, every word was true, leaving Chris speechless and unable to respond.
"Since you have nothing to do, I'll leave first." Joan had laughed enough and stopped, turning around and pretending to leave.
Joan had only come to check on the situation because she had requested medical assistance. Since Chris was fine, there was no need for her to stay any longer.
"Wait, uh, Joan." Seeing that the other party was about to leave, Chris stopped her out of a sudden desire to win her over.
Joan stood there, not turning around, but uttered a questioning sound from her throat: "Hmm?"
"Thank you very much for your willingness to help in various aspects..." Chris brainstormed, looking for an excuse to add Qiong's terminal contact information. After all, one more powerful person he knew meant one more way out.
"So?" Joan tilted her head, puzzled.
"Um, could you add a terminal? I'd like to ask about your combat skills assessment and how you trained..." This was the only excuse Kris could come up with in a hurry, but it wasn't just an excuse. Kris did want to ask Joan for advice; after all, Joan's strength was well-known among his classmates.
Joan was also a little surprised for a moment. She turned around and laughed directly at Chris. She shook her head and disagreed with Chris's request, with an undisguised inquiry on her face.
She said meaningfully, "There's no need to ask me, Kris of the Nar family. As long as you study hard, you will catch up."
But Joan did not completely refuse. She pointed at the terminal in Chris's hand and continued, "If there is a chance, we will contact each other again." After that, she left without looking back.
Seeing that Joan had gone so far, Chris knew his limits. He didn't show any dissatisfaction or frustration, but just smiled and nodded politely, watching her leave.
This question of Chris's wasn't entirely fruitless; at least Joan had formed a certain impression of him, and wasn't completely unwilling to interact with him. Although it was only a superficial relationship, Chris felt that at this stage, it was enough.
Shaking off the complex thoughts in his mind, Chris looked at the equipment in the practice field with a look of trepidation, and resigned himself to his fate and continued practicing. But with the lessons learned from the previous time, he consciously slowed down his progress, constantly reminding himself that "too much is as bad as too little."
After practicing intermittently for an hour, Chris's body continued to heat up. Every muscle seemed to be torn and split inside his body. The burning sensation spreading in his chest with every breath made him miserable. His brows were furrowed... At the end of the practice, Chris really didn't want to move even a finger.
He gritted his teeth and finished the last set of exercises, breathed a long sigh of relief, ended today's training, and did another set of stretching.
Dragging his exhausted body, Chris took a quick sonic cleansing bath in the shower room, then left the training ground with a hunched back like a crushed shrimp and heavy steps.
He stood at the doorway in a daze for a long time, remembering how he had been picky about taking the shuttle bus when he came here, and how lucky he was to meet Nuhra who was passing by and gave him a ride...
But now, exhausted from his workout, he could only rely on the shuttle bus to get back to the dorm. At this moment, Chris put aside his chaotic discontent and walked towards the shuttle bus waiting area without hesitation.
He simply didn't have the energy or courage to say he could walk back to the dorm. Considering other people's opinions, Chris still felt he couldn't let himself suffer.
Kris didn't have to wait long before a maglev shuttle bus arrived. He composed himself and boarded the bus calmly. He quickly found an empty seat and sat down, ignoring the occasional glances from those around him.
Chris was too tired to care about their looks. He simply closed his eyes and took a short nap in his seat, which effectively blocked out all the malicious glances.
The chaotic first day at Vincent Military Academy is almost over... and the blueprint for a new life is taking shape in Chris's mind.
