Chapter 37 Joke
The two cakes Samantha sent disrupted Nuhra's original plan. He also had to take away the fruit tart he'd ordered, as Chris couldn't finish it.
"I feel sleepy after eating..." Chris and Nuhra walked out of the box together, and Nuhra even carried the takeaway box of lava tarts for him.
"Go back and get some rest. We have a tough battle this afternoon," Nuhra said with a smile. "There's a rest room in my office. You can go there and lie down for a while."
"Okay." Chris did feel a little tired, and replied while rubbing his forehead.
They walked along the corridor towards the elevator, but when they passed by a private room, the door happened to open from the inside, and Samantha and another man in luxurious clothes walked out one after another.
Not only Chris and his companions, but even Samantha and her companions across from them were somewhat surprised. However, three of the four people present had been in the social world for many years and quickly adjusted themselves to the situation, greeting each other and exchanging a few pleasantries.
"Captain Samantha, Prime Minister Amiya, what a coincidence," Nuhra said politely. Samantha was a colleague, and Amiya was the leader of the civil service faction, so Nuhra naturally had to take the initiative.
"Good day, both of you." Amiya nodded in response, her eyes lingering between Nuhra and Coris for a moment without any expression.
"Good day, it's my honor to meet you two." Coris also sensed the observation from Amiya. Seeing that Nuhra didn't say anything, he replied with a stiff upper lip.
Samantha smiled kindly at Chris, seeming more approachable than Nuhra had described. She turned to Nuhra and said jokingly, "I didn't expect to see you here... Don't forget our appointment."
She seemed to be very familiar with Amiya and Nuhra, and her words were not much concerned with any social etiquette, more like a joke between friends. "Let's go, Lord Amiya, I promised His Majesty that I would send you back safely."
Amiya reached out to stop Samantha, who was about to leave. His expressionless face broke into a faint smile—directed at Chris. He said calmly, "Chris, if you encounter any problems, you can come to the Imperial Government Council to find me."
Kris was momentarily nervous and looked to Nuhra for help. Nuhra silently stepped forward, shielding most of Kris's body from view, and thanked Amiya for his kindness. "Thank you, Prime Minister, for your concern. I'm sure Kris will remember this... If anything else happens, I'll be sure to consult you promptly."
An Mia finished what she was about to say, nodded, and turned to leave. Samantha, who was standing by, listened to the conversation, her expression becoming more serious. She waved goodbye to Nuhra and the others.
Nuhra and Chris stood there, watching Amiya and Samantha enter the elevator. After the elevator door slowly closed, Chris relaxed completely, and his originally straight body suddenly collapsed.
He stared at Nuhra in shock and said firmly, "I will never eat here again... absolutely."
"Also, what did the Prime Minister mean by that?" Coris reached out to grab Nuhra's palm, trying to seek some support.
Nuhra adjusted his hand movements and held Chris's cold hand in his palm. "Let's talk about it when we get back." He looked around and didn't intend to stay here any longer.
Kris nodded obediently and let Nuhra lead him away. Standing in the elevator, they both tacitly kept quiet. Kris, through the reflection of the metal inside the elevator, vaguely caught a glimpse of Nuhra, whose brows were slightly furrowed, and subconsciously tugged at his hand.
Nuhra turned around, the hostility between her brows suddenly disappeared, replaced by an expression of patient listening: "Hmm?"
Kris was speechless for a moment and could only hold Nuhra's hand tighter. The next moment, the elevator door opened. Kris, because of what he had encountered today, had a conditioned reflex and immediately let go of Nuhra's hand.
Nuhra also knew that their current relationship was still not open to the public, so she didn't say much and walked out of the elevator first.
"Uh, will the surveillance camera capture it?" Chris belatedly remembered a very important thing and reminded carefully.
"It's okay, I'll send someone to delete it. Samantha will probably delete the part in the corridor as well." The two walked side by side, looking normal.
Chris didn't quite understand, but he knew for sure there wouldn't be any problems. Trusting Nuhra, he didn't ask any more questions.
After entering Nuhra's office, he didn't go back to his desk. Instead, he led Corris to a secret door in the corner. Nuhra stopped in front of the door. After the hidden scanner confirmed his identity, the quantum barrier formed by the door dissipated.
Following the sound, Kris stepped forward and took in the entire lounge's interior. The lounge was half the size of an office, similar in layout to the private rooms in the officers' club, but significantly larger and even furnished with a bed.
After Corris and Nuhra entered the lounge, the quantum barrier was reassembled and the lounge became an enclosed and independent space again.
Facing the soft, white bed, Chris had only one thought: to lie down and roll around. So he did, taking off his shoes and leaning back on the bed.
Nuhra sat down next to Kris with a gentle look on her face. She leaned over and carefully observed Kris's face, saying to him, "Well, it looks like you're really scared."
Chris rolled over and his back hit Nuhra's body. Nuhra took the opportunity to put her arms around him to prevent him from moving, and they talked in this position.
Speaking of this, Corris still felt a lingering fear and sighed: "Compared to Samantha, I'm actually more afraid of An Miya... How is your relationship with him?"
Nuhra's hand had been casually placed on Kris's chest. Seeing Kris's gloomy expression, she patted him on the back and soothed him, "It's not hot or cold. He and I only have a friendship from our early years. In recent years, we've belonged to different systems, so naturally, we haven't had much communication."
Corris remained silent, probably sorting out the relationships between the characters in his mind. Nuhra also remained silent, quietly accompanying him.
"What about Samantha and Amiya? And His Majesty the Emperor... From what Samantha said, it seems that His Majesty values Amiya very much?" Coris was imprisoned by Nuhra and could not move, but it was indeed a bit tiring to maintain the sideways posture for a long time, so he simply leaned on Nuhra behind him.
"You're very perceptive." Nuhra chuckled softly, seeming quite satisfied with Corris's performance. "Samantha and His Majesty are cousins. His Majesty's three siblings, Amiya, and Samantha were all veterans who started the rebellion together back then."
Corris suddenly realized that these people were the ones who were truly loyal to the emperor of the empire. Their greatest reliance was not the aristocratic families, but Emperor Clarence himself.
"What about you?" Kris found that Nuhra knew a lot. Although he was a pirate leader who surrendered halfway, Nuhra seemed to have a good relationship with the members of the Emperor's entrepreneurial team... It is not ruled out that Nuhra's intelligence network is very powerful, but Kris intuitively thinks that this is not the case.
"Me?" Nuhra raised her eyebrows, not expecting that Chris would ask about these past events directly.
"I reached a fair deal with them." Nuhra's hand remained on Corris, and she explained calmly, "Clarence and Amiya's ideals align with my goals, so I chose them."
Nuhra's tone sounded normal, but Corris could hear the emotional ups and downs hidden in his words... He turned his head and looked at Nuhra worriedly, feeling a little regretful. "Should I not have mentioned this?"
"No, you'll know these things sooner or later." Nuhra smiled, but the smile was fleeting. "I'm afraid that after you fully understand, you'll see that I'm a cold-blooded person and regret having anything to do with me."
Kris propped himself up and sat up, gazing at Nuhra with a calm and steady gaze. He said solemnly, "Nuhra, I'm indeed younger than you, but that doesn't mean I don't have the ability to judge... I only believe what I see and what I feel."
Nuhra didn't look away for a long time, as if he wanted to imprint this moment of Corris deeply in his mind. After an unknown amount of time, he shook his head helplessly and chuckled to himself, "I didn't expect that at my age, I'd still be comforted by someone younger than me."
After saying this, Corris fell back onto the bed and lay down. Hearing Nuhra say this, he immediately feigned dissatisfaction and retorted, "Are you very old? I think you're just right."
Nuhra adjusted his state quickly. He laughed out loud when he heard that and ruffled Chris's hair with his hands. "Go to sleep, Chris." He saw that Chris was so sleepy that he could hardly open his eyes, so he took the initiative to end the conversation.
"Older people should sleep with younger ones..." Kris closed his eyes and muttered to himself. Those who didn't know him would think he was talking in his sleep, but Nuhra could clearly see his crimson earlobes.
Nuhra had evil intentions. He pinched Corris's earlobe with his fingers, leaned close to Corris, and whispered a few words in his ear.
"I want to go to sleep!" Chris was so angry that he immediately pulled the quilt over his head and covered it tightly.
After admiring all this, Nuhra lay down beside Chris contentedly, planning to take a short nap before getting up and going out to handle work.
I don't know how long I slept. When Chris woke up, Nuhra was standing by the bed. "It's time to get up. We have to meet Samantha."
Chris got up from the bed in a daze, and with the help of Nuhra, he adjusted his clothes and finally looked quite presentable before leaving the lounge.
"What should I do next? What should I say?" Fortunately, Nuhra's training room can be reached by a special elevator, which saves a lot of effort. Chris hurriedly confirmed with Nuhra.
"If something you don't want to talk about is mentioned, just smile." Nohra changed into training clothes and was adjusting her equipment.
"Hmm..." Kris looked up at the constantly changing elevator floors, knowing that they were about to arrive... Kris closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and when he opened his eyes again, the elevator door opened, and the following scenes all turned into slow motion - several clusters of simulated holographic fireworks directly blocked their view, a cheerful and exciting march sounded, and there was a red carpet laid on the ground.
"Congratulations, congratulations." Samantha stood not far away, clapping her hands sincerely and laughing wildly.
Nuhra calmly waved away the fireworks before her. "I didn't expect Captain Samantha to be so interested in setting up my training room like this. Thank you for taking the trouble."
"No, no, just some little gadgets to liven things up. Not connected to the system, disposable," Samantha admitted modestly. Chris noticed that she didn't seem to be wearing training clothes, but the military uniform she had worn when they met at noon.
The red-haired officer clapped his hands, and the fireworks all over the room, the deafening background music, and the out-of-place red carpet disappeared in an instant.
"Hello, Krisnar." Samantha walked towards them and greeted Kris in a friendly manner. Then she shoved the documents in her hand into his arms. "It's a wedding gift. You're welcome."
After saying that, she actually turned around and left, catching everyone off guard.
Chris felt like he had been handed a hot potato, unsure whether to return it or keep it. Nuhra took the initiative to reach out and took it, then shouted at Samantha's back, "Would you like to chat a little more today, Captain Samantha?"
"No, I'm in a hurry to close the market." Samantha turned around and walked backwards. "The officers' club was betting on whether you were married... Anyway, the result is, I won."
"Oh, and Chris." Samantha was about to retreat to the door when she suddenly remembered something. "If you want any exclusive information about Admiral Nuhra, you're welcome to come to me."
Chris was a little amused and helpless for a moment, nodded hastily, and watched the other party leave in a leisurely manner.
Nuhra was also somewhat helpless about this and explained awkwardly: "She has always been like this. Today she let us go."
"I guess it must be because of what Amiya said that she has become more restrained and is willing to take the initiative to provide clues." Nuhra seemed to be thinking about something, weighing the heavy paper documents in her hand.
"Then... have we achieved our goal today?" Corris said tentatively.
"No, not yet." Nuhra looked meaningful and cooperated with him in adjusting the equipment on his body. Chris suddenly had a bad premonition.
Is it too late for him to follow Samantha now?
