Chapter 68 Senior
A listless Chris returned to his dorm, not wanting to eat properly. He simply grabbed a packet of liquid food and slurped it down for dinner. As for why he didn't choose a nutrition bar, Chris felt too exhausted to even chew.
Chris stood in the bathroom, staring blankly at the wall, letting the water from the showerhead wash over him from head to toe. The stickiness on his skin finally vanished. He let out a long breath, turned off the shower, and shuffled to dry himself. He put on his pajamas and left the bathroom, sprawled out on his bed.
He was so sleepy that he could hardly keep his eyelids open. He forced himself to muster the last bit of energy and asked the terminal to set the alarm for tomorrow. Then his eyes went dark and he fell into a deep sleep.
Because of excessive fatigue, Chris slept very deeply. The next day, the alarm on the terminal rang several times before he gradually heard a sound. He struggled to touch the terminal on the bedside table that was screaming incessantly. With the double vision in his eyes, he pressed the pause button angrily - the world was finally quiet.
He cautiously walked out of the living room. Lauren was not there, and everything was quiet. The obvious consequence of not eating well last night was that his stomach kept growling as soon as he got up today. Chris walked slowly to the kitchen and made himself a simple breakfast in the food processor.
He sat down at the bar, wolfing down his breakfast, and finally his brain started to function normally again.
Today he is going to attend a part-time job training. The acceptance email said that the training hall management will assign a suitable formal job for Chris to be his coach.
But Kris had no real hope for this. After yesterday's peeping incident, he was absolutely certain that Sayde was paying too much attention to him. But he didn't want to feign ignorance. In Kris's limited understanding, if he tried to gloss over the situation, Sayde would only become more excited, following him around with mysterious words and doing shady things. It would be better to get straight to the point and explain things clearly; maybe communication would be effective.
To be honest, Corris was really tired of his current life, which cycled back and forth between worry, tension and dullness, but he could not see the dawn of a breakthrough... Both the upper echelons of the empire and the enemies lurking in the dark knew very well that the current calm was only temporary. The storm was approaching, and it would only take one opportunity to sweep away everything.
By then, the balance of power in this chess game based on the interests of the empire will be disrupted again... Whoever can seize the initiative in the chaos will have a chance to achieve ultimate victory.
Who would have thought that at first, Chris just wanted to find a backer to protect himself amidst the battles between many forces... But as things have developed to this point, Chris is completely unable to escape. He can only try his best to protect himself and his friends and not hold Nuhra back. This is why he has been training harder than before recently.
Chris sighed, stood up from his chair expressionlessly, and placed his clean plate in the sink. After confirming the cleaning process had started, he returned to his room, dressed, and prepared to go out to the training hall.
It happened to be class time, and there were obviously fewer people on the shuttle bus. Chris could choose any seat he liked. He sat down in an inner seat by the window, looked at the scenery, and began to daydream.
For some reason, he became more interested in Sayid's background. This person always appeared in unexpected occasions, and his behavior was strange and unpredictable... With the precedent of Lauren being framed by a temporary worker in the training hall, Chris concluded that there must be something complicated behind the identity of "Sayid". Maybe even his identity as a formal employee was not real.
"We have arrived at Training Hall No. 2. Please get off the bus in an orderly manner from the back door..." The shuttle bus's voice announcement diligently reminded the passengers in the bus. Chris stood up with a calm expression and got off the bus with the crowd.
He followed the instructions in the email and found the office of the training hall inspector... Out of courtesy, Chris first communicated with the person inside through the system at the door. Not long after, the door opened and a sturdy middle-aged man stood behind the door. Chris looked past him and vaguely saw a familiar figure from inside.
The middle-aged man forced a kind smile and greeted Chris: "Hello, you are the new part-time student, right? Come in!"
Chris nodded, smiled shyly and appropriately, and followed the middle-aged man into the office stiffly.
"Your name is... Chris, right? I'm Rohansen, the director of Training Hall No. 2. If you have any questions here, you can contact me directly." Rohansen's smile did not last long. He quickly turned serious and his expression was tense.
Corris then grumbled twice, then fell silent again, his peripheral vision flickering towards the figure standing by the window. Rohansen rambled on, urging him to work hard... Then, slapping his head, he introduced Corris to another person in the office. "Come, meet me! This is your future supervisor. He's a regular employee who started here a while ago... Said."
The man who had been standing motionless by the window with his back to the crowd finally turned around. It was indeed Syd, whom Kris had already met. Kris pretended to be meeting him for the first time and greeted him friendly, "Hello."
Sayid still looked indifferent and gloomy. Seeing this, he just raised his eyelids and glanced at Chris, and said "hmm" lazily, indicating that he heard it.
Rohansen also seemed a little ashamed of his employee. As a boss, he spoke to Said in a consultative tone, and Chris could vaguely sense a bit of panic.
"Okay, Chris, just follow Said and get familiar with the work content. The schedule has been sent to your terminal. Just start working according to the schedule next week." Rohansen was eager for Said to take Chris out quickly, so he found an excuse to ask them to leave without saying a few words.
Said walked casually in front of Chris, while Chris kept a distance behind him with a cautious look on his face. The two maintained a subtle silence.
Along the way, whenever Sayid thought of something, he would stop and say a few words to Chris in a neutral tone. It sounded more like he was talking in his sleep than giving any instructions... But for work purposes, Chris had no choice but to listen carefully and write down what he said.
"What's wrong? We haven't seen each other for a while. You don't remember me?" After clearly sensing Chris's perfunctory attitude, Sayid turned around and looked at Chris with interest.
Corris didn't want to have any unnecessary communication with Said, but since the man took the initiative to bring up the topic, he responded without hesitation: "I'm sorry, I don't have to remember you, do I?"
Said didn't expect that Chris would be so ruthless to him. The young man in front of him was obviously afraid of him a while ago, but now he looked indifferent. Said smiled sinisterly and let out a strange laugh from his throat: "Interesting..." After that, he didn't say anything else and introduced the work content to Chris without much care.
After a lengthy walk through the entire training hall, Curris's patience ran out. He and Sayid walked to the back door, one after the other. Sayid leaned against the wall, slouching as he studied Curris, muttering something cryptic, "I didn't expect... they'd choose you."
"What did you say?" Said's voice was too soft for Chris to hear at all. He frowned in confusion and asked back.
"It's okay." Said smiled meaningfully at Chris. He stood up straight and turned to walk into the training hall without paying any attention to Chris standing there. When his back was about to disappear, he added: "Remember to leave and come home on time."
Chris was speechless. This guy was still as problematic as ever. Recalling the previous scene, he got goosebumps all over his body. He didn't want to stay in the training hall for long, so he sent a text message to Rohansen politely explaining that he had understood the situation and had classes later, so he would leave first.
Luo Hansen quickly replied, without any comment, simply saying he understood and that Chris could leave on his own. With the confirmation, Chris prepared to take the shuttle bus to the school gate and head home without any worries.
Today is the day he is going home. Recently, Nuhra has been working overtime in the military. According to Nuhra himself in the video call, he has not even been home for several days.
"Brother, how about I go to the military headquarters to send you something?" During the video call, Chris suggested worriedly.
Nuhra, on the other end of the terminal, kept her head down, working on paperwork. She occasionally glanced at Corris on the screen and rejected his offer. "Don't come, sweetheart... I'll be home after these two days of work. Just wait for me at home."
"Okay." Chris curled his lips in disappointment, but quickly cheered up and told Nuhra about what he encountered in the academy, his training experience, etc. Anyway, he just chatted aimlessly.
Although Nuhra was busy, she always paid close attention to what Chris was saying. When she heard him talk about exercise, Nuhra, who always remembered that she wanted to be Chris's personal trainer, suddenly suggested, "Honey, why don't you come with me to the Seventh Army training base in a few days and experience the training atmosphere."
Corris was naturally eager for this opportunity. He hadn't had the chance to be with Nuhra for a long time. Now he had this chance to follow him and observe and learn from the team commanded by Nuhra. He was very excited, his eyes twinkling, and he happily agreed: "That's great, do I need to make any preparations?"
Seeing his happy look, Nuhra's eyes inadvertently revealed a gentle smile: "No need to prepare, just follow me obediently when the time comes."
"Okay!" Corris was eager to try, but soon he remembered something else: "By the way, brother, do any of your subordinates know about our relationship?"
Nuhra raised an eyebrow and gave an ambiguous answer: "...They will find out sooner or later, so let them be."
Chris didn't quite understand his thoughts, but since Nuhra had said so, he had no objection. Ever since they'd revealed their relationship to their friends, Chris's fear of the matter seemed to have lessened, and he was more likely to just let things take their course.
"Besides, didn't you say you wanted to sign up for the Seventh Army?" Nuhra said with a smile, her eyes fixed on Corris without disguising. "This time, I can also learn from my predecessors."
