Chapter 218 Covered in Dust

Neither of them followed any conventional rules. They spent the day having a carefree time outside, and finally returned to the city in the evening.

They didn't feel anything while playing, but when it was time to go back to the city, they both started thinking about their baby who had just turned one month old.

The child at this age is incredibly cute. He has fully grown up, with a round, fair face and dark, bright eyes. However, he doesn't smile yet; he just stares at you with a blank expression that melts your heart.

For the past month, the two children have been almost always with them. Both parents love to look at their children, and now that they haven't seen them for a day, they naturally miss them terribly.

Unfortunately, riding horses is not allowed in the city, as it could hit pedestrians and cause danger. So even though the two were in a hurry to get back to see their child, they could only ride their horses slowly back.

Both of them frequently strolled around the capital, and many ordinary people knew them. Some of them had even received help from Jiang Xuelin and were not afraid of the powerful and wealthy. When they saw her, they would greet her happily.

Many people in the capital knew that she had given birth to a son and a daughter. Because her belly was so big before, she hadn't come out for a long time. When they saw her now, they couldn't help but ask her a few questions and wish her and her two children a safe and happy life.

As the young princess and heir of the Prince of Ping's mansion, the two children would naturally be safe and happy, but that wouldn't stop them from offering their blessings.

Although Jiang Xuelin missed her child, she wouldn't ignore everyone's good intentions and naturally returned the gifts happily.

Neither of them really resembled the sons of powerful and wealthy families. Both Fu Hanlai and Jiang Xuelin were like that. Compared to others, they lacked some of the arrogance and reserve that comes with being high and mighty.

As for Jiang Xuelin, the difference between her and other noble ladies is even more obvious. This is also why she had basically no close friends except for Fei Qing. Their tastes and styles are different. Those young ladies are not very willing to associate with ordinary people and are very particular about rules. As a result, they are very resistant to Jiang Xuelin, who is an outlier.

Of course, this doesn't mean those girls and ladies are wrong; it's just that they have different values.

Jiang Xuelin didn't like being with them either. Apart from Fei Qing, she was only close to two or three daughters of military officers. However, after they got married, they went to other places with their husbands and lost contact with each other, except for letters exchanged during festivals.

The two chatted and laughed with people they met along the way. Fu Hanlai had come out before, but Jiang Xuelin hadn't appeared for quite some time. Some people who used to be in frequent contact with her missed her.

As they were walking, Jiang Xuelin and Fu Hanlai suddenly stopped, then immediately released the reins and galloped forward.

A few meters ahead of them in the tavern, a huge wine vat, about six or seven feet tall, was slowly tipping over. The tavern waiter below seemed to be trying to stop it, but the vat continued to slowly crash down.

Just two or three feet behind the waiter stood a little child holding a candied hawthorn.

Jiang Xuelin remembered him; he was the grandson of the tavern owner.

Because the two suddenly changed their expressions, the others finally realized something was wrong and immediately cried out in alarm.

Jiang Xuelin leaped up, stomped hard on the roadside stones with both legs, and then kicked the huge wine vat hard.

The waiter was struggling to hold on when he suddenly felt the pressure on his shoulder ease. The wine vat that was about to fall was kicked back onto the stone block, and the wine inside splashed out, soaking Jiang Xuelin.

The waiter knew that Jiang Xuelin had helped him, and he thanked her profusely with lingering fear, "Thank you, Princess Consort! Thank you, Princess Consort!"

Such a heavy wine vat could have killed someone if it had fallen. Jiang Xuelin saved his life, and the good wine in the vat was also saved.

That really scared him to death.

"It's alright. Be more careful next time. It's too dangerous. Life is more important. If you encounter something like this again, avoid it if it's not feasible." Jiang Xuelin glanced at her wet clothes. Luckily, she had worn a cloak while riding today, so she wasn't too disheveled. She could just wipe the wine off her face and take a good bath when she got back.

Fu Hanlai walked over carrying the child in his arms. His clothes were dusty and looked rather drab. The child in his arms was a little terrified when he suddenly rolled away from where he was holding him.

The child was returned to the tavern owner who came out after noticing something amiss. The others who witnessed the crisis quickly explained what had happened.

The couple managed to save two lives: one held up the overturned vat, and the other carried the child out from under it.

Knowing what had happened, the tavern owner thanked him repeatedly. Seeing that Jiang Xuelin was covered in alcohol, he quickly tried to take her inside to change her clothes, but Jiang Xuelin refused.

We're almost at the Prince's residence; let's just go back.

It was getting late, and they didn't want to linger any longer.

After declining the tavern owner's thanks, the two hurried back, but stopped in their tracks when they arrived at the gate of the Prince's Mansion.

In a sorry state.

Jiang Xuelin still smelled of alcohol, her cloak was torn at the hem, and her hair was not completely dry. Fu Hanlai, on the other hand, was wearing a royal blue riding outfit today, but now there was a large black patch on his body.

"You're covered in dust..."

"You reek of alcohol, and your cloak is torn..."

Looking at each other in bewilderment.jpg

If Princess Ping sees me picking up the child like this, it won't look good.

"Let's go back to Qiutang Courtyard for a bath first, and then go to the main courtyard to pick up the child."

"Okay, let's leave it at that."

After a day of outings, both of them stood before Princess Ping, looking disheveled and embarrassed.

Let's go back and pack first. Anyway, they're in such a state that we can't carry both of them when we go to pick up the kids.

"...Why do you two look like that? What happened?"

Upon returning to his residence, Prince Ping saw his son and daughter-in-law hesitating at the gate. He was shocked by their appearance and looked at them with suspicion.

"...You guys didn't get into a fight, did you?"

Jiang Xuelin: "..."

Fu Hanlai: "..."

No, no, that's not true!

After some explanation, the two were still not able to return to Qiutang Courtyard first. Instead, they were taken to the main courtyard by Prince Ping and brought before Princess Ping.

Princess Ping was whispering to her babbling grandchildren that their parents might have forgotten something when she heard a noise and turned around to see two disheveled people following Prince Ping in.

"..."

Silence fell.

Jiang Xuelin wrapped her cloak tighter around herself, standing there with a chill running down her spine, and secretly gave Fu Han a look—explain quickly!

This isn't something you can just do randomly in a fight!

"Your Highness, look at these two. Don't they look like mud-covered monkeys who've been out playing all day?"

She glanced at Prince Ping and immediately swallowed the rest of his laughter. Then, Princess Ping looked at her son and daughter-in-law and said, "What's wrong? Lin'er, you've just finished your postpartum period. You'd better not catch a cold."

After hearing Fu Hanlai briefly explain what had happened and why he came directly to the main courtyard instead of going back to bathe first, Princess Ping glared at Prince Ping speechlessly.

"Why did Your Highness send them here? They should go back and take a bath first!"

"Hey, I brought them here to show the Princess!"

Princess Ping: "..."

I really don't want to watch it.

real!
