Immediately afterwards, thick black smoke billowed from his body, and in a short while, his burly figure shrank considerably. Then, the entire corpse puppet collapsed like a deflated balloon.
As the two walked past him, Wang Yao felt a little regretful. It was a pity that Gu Qi wasn't there, which was a waste of a delicious meal.
Wang Yao and the fairy maiden walked slowly forward, listening to their footsteps echoing in the empty corridor. Since encountering several high-level corpse puppets and that low-level corpse puppet, they had walked for quite a while without seeing anything else, only the corpse aura in the corridor had become increasingly dense.
"It seems there's nothing left. Let's speed things up." As the fairy walked, she looked down at the soul lamp, handed the lantern in her hand to Wang Yao, took out another one for herself, and said impatiently as she lit it.
Wang Yao had already labeled himself a "good guy," so he had no objections. He had just nodded when he suddenly heard a long, drawn-out cry coming from deep in the stairwell: "Ah... Yi... Ya, ah... Yi... Ya." It sounded like someone was crying and shouting in sorrow.
"What the hell?" The fairy was startled and turned to look at Wang Yao. Wang Yao shook his head at her. Hearing this voice, the fairy was no longer in a hurry to use her teleportation magic. Instead, she walked forward with Wang Yao, her body close to his, looking somewhat timid.
The voice was truly terrifying. Although the fairy was a great immortal, she was still a woman after all, so it was normal for her to feel a little uneasy.
Wang Yao looked down at the Soul Lamp. The Three-Way Center was still far away. He silently called out to the Energy Office and found that the Energy Office was also outside the light and shadow of the lantern. He couldn't help but click his tongue in amazement.
The corpse energy is spreading so fast. This must be the place he and those ghosts who were infatuated with Hui Shuo have been before, but now it is completely filled with corpse energy, even worse than the situation he encountered in the Energy Office. All of this can only mean that the source of the corpse energy is powerful.
The two walked a little further and found that the source of the eerie scream was in a side path. The fairy and Wang Yao exchanged a glance and the fairy quietly shook her head at him. Wang Yao shook his head back at the fairy and turned to walk into the side path.
The fairy maiden shook her head, meaning she didn't want to go into the side path and only planned to visit the Santong Center before returning. Wang Yao, however, had a different idea. He didn't know what was making that sound, and he wanted to see for himself before he could feel at ease.
If it were some kind of monster, and they walked past it only to have it block their retreat from behind, that would be a real problem.
Seeing that Wang Yao was determined to find the source of the sound, the fairy frowned, muttered something, hesitated for a moment, and then followed closely behind.
Amidst the staggered footsteps of the two, there were strange cries of "Ah... Yi... Ya, Ah... Yi... Ya." Wang Yao felt that the cries were getting closer and closer, as if he could see them with just a glance, but the corridor in front of him, shrouded in blue mist, remained empty at a glance.
“Here.” Wang Yao walked to a closed door, suddenly stopped, listened for a while, and then turned to the fairy.
"Here? The door is locked?" The fairy frowned as she looked at the door next to Wang Yao.
Wang Yao examined the closed door and suddenly felt a sense of familiarity. He abruptly remembered that this path led to the dead end that Huang Sheng had mentioned before. And this locked door, as Huang Sheng had previously explained, was the main gate to the core area of the Underworld District.
He listened to Huang Sheng's casual introduction and even made a mental note of it. At the time, he only planned to wait until he saw Hui Shuo off and then come back to make a scene here, embarrassing Gu Qi. Now, the cries of "Ah... Yi... Ya, Ah... Yi... Ya" seemed to be coming from behind that door.
Wang Yao reached out and gently pushed the door, but found it wouldn't budge; it was locked tightly. He stepped back, raised one foot, and prepared to kick the door.
"Wait, there seems to be a trap here," the fairy maiden said, stopping Wang Yao.
"The mechanism? Where is it?" Wang Yao stopped in astonishment, only to see the fairy girl feeling her hands on the flat door panel. This door, like the doors in other parts of the underworld, looked flat and neat.
The reason Wang Yao was able to remember that this was the door Huang Sheng had introduced was mainly because he was an immortal with a powerful memory, and he had deliberately memorized the location of the door. In fact, it was a judgment made by combining many indescribable environmental factors, rather than because he discovered any features on the door.
The fairy seemed to notice something amiss with the door. Wang Yao followed her hand and examined it closely, and indeed found that the wood grain on the door was rather strange, with some of the grain appearing to be a bit darker.
“I’ve seen this kind of door before; it must lead to some important place,” the fairy said as she felt around.
“I think I heard the ghost mention that this door leads to the core area of the Underworld Queen’s District,” Wang Yao said. As the fairy’s hand slid to the right, the patterns on the door changed accordingly.
"Huh? There really is a problem," Wang Yao said in surprise.
"You just realized that? This isn't anything new. Have you ever played Huarong Road? This is similar to Huarong Road, only the patterns are so similar that it can be a bit confusing." The fairy glared at Wang Yao, her fingers moving incessantly across the door, causing the patterns on the door to change accordingly.
"This is actually just a lock. The Heavenly Court also sets up locks like this in some important places. They look high-end, but they're not very effective. They're just for fooling laymen. They keep out honest people, but not scoundrels. It's more effective to hang a big padlock on it... Hmm...?"
The fairy had just spoken a few words with great confidence when she suddenly frowned.
Wang Yao knew that while there were many ways to pass through a typical Huarong Road puzzle, there was probably only one way to pass through a Huarong Road puzzle with a lock. Just like a key can only open one lock, having too many methods would be like having too many keys to open the lock, which would lead to chaos.
