Chapter 392 Surprise Attack

As night fell, Gale Fortress remained calm, but none of Gao Chong or his generals could rest peacefully. The soldiers on the city wall were rotated under the arrangement of the generals. Wang Yao, since he didn't need to sleep, idly stared into the distance from the city wall.

The thick smoke from the divine fire was very conspicuous, and it was clear that the fire was gradually extending towards the distant south, like a winding fire serpent silently conveying the news of the war.

"Do you celebrate the New Year in your immortal realm?" Gao Chong suddenly asked in the darkness of the night.

"New Year? That should be a festival for humans, right?" Wang Yao shook his head in astonishment.

Memories of the Lunar New Year were distant for Wang Yao; he barely remembered them. But Gao Chong's words seemed to bring something back to him: the deserted streets left after everyone had gone home, and the sumptuous feasts enjoyed during family reunions...

“No New Year? What’s the point of being an immortal?” Gao Chong said sullenly. “Our divine realm has the Summer Solstice Festival and the Autumn Harvest Festival, but the most interesting one has to be the New Year.”

"The New Year celebration begins with dinner, also known as New Year's Eve. Once dinner is eaten, the New Year officially begins. But when to eat dinner varies from family to family. In our village, some families start eating at noon, some in the afternoon, and some don't start until midnight."

Gao Chong stared into the distance, muttering to himself.

"We set off firecrackers before dinner as usual, just like announcing to the world, 'It's Chinese New Year in my family!'" Gao Chong said, a slight smile appearing on his lips. "We always eat dinner at midnight. Just imagine, while firecrackers are going off everywhere outside, my parents are still leisurely preparing at home."

“So every New Year’s Eve, for a long time, my heart aches as if it were being scratched by a cat.” Gao Chong turned to look at Wang Yao, his eyes shining in the darkness. “After joining the army, before every major battle, I felt like I was celebrating the New Year when I was a child.”

"You immortals can't possibly have this feeling."

After hearing Gao Chong's words, Wang Yao opened his mouth to refute them. After all, he also celebrated the New Year before he transmigrated. If he really recalled it, he would have a lot of feelings to share with Gao Chong.

Unexpectedly, at that moment, a loud bang suddenly rang out in the distance, and a mushroom cloud wrapped in lightning, thunder and flames rose into the sky. Gao Chong tensed up instantly upon seeing this.

"What's wrong?" Wang Yao asked hurriedly.

"The main god and the main demon are making their move! Commander Yue and his men have launched their attack!" Gao Chong's tone was filled with excitement.

"Commander Yue? Isn't he at Partridge Village?" Wang Yao's eyes widened. Shouldn't it be Zhang Xian, Yue Yun, and Lu Wenlong who made the move in the Reed Camp? Yue Fei had previously expressed doubts about whether the three of them could defeat the enemy's main demon.

“It must be Commander Yue who made the move,” Gao Chong said confidently. He then took out a token from his pocket. Wang Yao noticed that this token seemed to be a size smaller than the one Yue Fei had given Gao Chong.

"Fu Qing, ignore the inferior demons along the way and attack the Reed Camp immediately, focusing on annihilating the demons above the level of Fierce Demon!" Gao Chong shouted at the token, then turned and ran towards the staircase on the city wall. "I'll go take a look ahead."

As they were speaking, several more earth-shattering explosions came from afar, and several more mushroom clouds rose slowly.

"Wait, I'll go with you!" Wang Yao was bored on the city wall when he heard that Gao Chong was going to the front line, so he hurriedly called out. However, he quickly shut his mouth. Gao Chong ran so fast that he had already disappeared without a trace.

Wang Yao took out "Immortal's Sorrow," flipped himself onto it, and wanted to fly ahead to see what was going on. However, "Immortal's Sorrow" had only risen a little over a meter and just exceeded the top of the city wall when a red light suddenly appeared above his head, and a tremendous force pressed down on him.

"Wang Xian, be careful! The aerial barrier inside the fortress has been activated. Come down quickly!" A divine general shouted at Wang Yao from the city wall.

Before the divine general's cries could subside, Wang Yao realized something was wrong. He hurriedly summoned "Immortal's Sorrow," twisted its dragon head, and slid down the city wall down the stairs.

No wonder Gao Chong and the others entered and exited Gale Fortress through the city gates; it turns out the aerial barrier had already been activated. When the hell was it activated? How come I didn't know?

Wang Yao muttered to himself, and seeing that the castle gate was still open, he twisted his right hand behind him and rode "Immortal's Sorrow" out of the castle gate.

After leaving Gale Fortress, Wang Yao raised "Immortal's Sorrow". Surrounded by darkness, he sped forward through the forest. Just as he increased his speed, he heard a cold voice suddenly come from ahead: "Password!"

"Uh... I am Wang Yao, an immortal!" Wang Yao was stunned upon hearing this. When the hell did this password come about? Why didn't I know about it?

Before Wang Yao could finish speaking, several divine generals appeared around him, forcing him to stop.

"The great battle has begun. No one may cross the defensive line without a password. Please return to the city immediately, my lord," shouted a leading general.

"Uh..." Wang Yao knew that there was no reasoning with these gods and generals, so he had no choice but to obediently turn on "Immortal's Sorrow". The gods and generals made way in the air and watched him drive back to Gale Fortress.

However, when Wang Yao arrived at the drawbridge of Galewind Fortress, he did not cross the bridge. Instead, he turned "Immortal's Sorrow" and slid to one side along the moat of Galewind Fortress.

He had previously strolled around and learned about the area and layout of the camp in front of Gale Fortress. At worst, he could just take a long detour to bypass the divine defenses. Even if the ground there was a swamp, "Immortal's Sorrow" could fly in the sky, so there was no need to worry too much.

Wang Yao circled around in the forest for a while, then felt a little confused. It was nighttime, and everything was dark. In the forest, all the trees looked the same, so he couldn't quite tell how far he had circled.
