Chapter Twenty-Three: The Road to Civilization

For no other reason than that just hearing the words "Civilized Road" is incredibly unlucky.

Upon entering the city, Wang Yao got out of the taxi at a roadside with an ATM, two streets away from Wenming Road. Under the taxi driver's supervision, he withdrew money to pay the fare and then turned to walk towards Wenming Road.

As I approached the entrance to Wenming Road, I saw several people wearing yellow vests looking in the mirror, combing their hair, dusting, and polishing their shoes... They were so serious and meticulous, it was as if a theatrical troupe was about to go on stage.

Wang Yao glanced at their tools lying to the side and realized that this group of people must be the sanitation workers responsible for Civilization Road. But judging from their cautious demeanor, were they also subject to "civilization surveillance"? Come to think of it, it made sense; everyone else was expected to be civilized, so why shouldn't the sanitation workers be?

Having such thoughts is incredibly uncivilized; it's occupational discrimination! But in this way, even though it's just street sweeping, it's considered a high-risk, high-danger job on Wenming Road. These people were probably desperate; otherwise, they wouldn't have jumped into this fire pit.

He ran to a shop window and carefully checked his appearance. After all, he had just used the magic "self-cleaning" not long ago, so he looked fairly clean and tidy.

Looking at the smart and handsome young man in the shop window, Wang Yao nodded in satisfaction, then turned around and went back to wait behind the group of cleaners.

It was his first time walking on Wenming Road, so he was being extra careful. Although he was an immortal and shouldn't be under the jurisdiction of the Huadu Civilization Office, who knew if there was any agreement between Heaven and Huadu? Heaven did have an office here, and he only earned 400 yuan a month; he felt bad if even a penny was deducted from his salary.

After waiting for a while, the cleaners finally got ready and carefully stepped onto Wenming Road.

The road was deserted in the early morning. A few people came in and startled a large flock of sparrows that were roosting on the road. They chirped and swore, and flew into the sky haphazardly.

Wang Yao thought to himself, "It's only because these birds can't be monitored that I'd lose a lot of civilization points, which would be a significant contribution to Huadu's economic development."

He looked at the sanitation workers' walking posture and found it really strange, just like the way women with bound feet walked in his ancient world before he traveled back in time. He couldn't help but wonder, why do these sanitation workers walk like that?

Does taking big steps mean you're uncivilized? Or is this the proper way to walk? But they come here every day to clean the civilized road, so they must know the rules inside and out. I'm sure I can't go wrong if I just follow their instructions.

The shops on both sides of Wenming Road had long since closed down. The doors and windows were crookedly nailed with wooden boards and covered with plastic sheets. Some roller shutters even had the words "Sold at the cost of blood" written in bright red ink, which made people feel a sense of desolation.

Wang Yao was looking up to find the Civilization Building when a scream suddenly broke the tranquility of Civilization Road.

"Oh no!" A cleaner accidentally fell to the ground, but the fall wasn't serious. Wang Yao saw him pounding the ground with his fist and suddenly burst into tears.

"Old Wei! Stop crying! Falling down will cost you 10 points, crying will cost you 5 points, and pounding the ground will cost you 20 points!" A nearby cleaner whispered a reminder, taking small, hurried steps toward Old Wei. Several others in the distance also immediately took small, seemingly fast but actually slow steps toward him.

Wang Yao thought to himself that it would be uncivilized not to help someone who had fallen, so he hurriedly took small steps toward Old Wei.

When I reached Old Wei, he was already wiping away tears. He had gotten up on his own and was bowing repeatedly to the person who had helped him up, saying thank you. It would be very impolite not to thank someone who had helped you up after you fell.

Those who came over also hurriedly bowed repeatedly to Lao Wei. If someone thanks you, it would be uncivilized not to return the bow!

Wang Yao also pretended to bow to Lao Wei, when suddenly he heard Lao Wei quietly ask him, "I've already bowed eight times, Lao Ma, how many have you done?"

Old Ma blinked: "I also have eight."

"I should bow one more time than you, so you don't need to bow anymore, let me bow."

As Old Wei spoke, he bowed to the other person again. Wang Yao thought to himself, "Is this because the recipient of help must give the helper even greater thanks?" That makes sense! Someone helps you up, and then bows to you even more—who's really helping whom here?

In this situation, accepting one less bow or one more bow is considered uncivilized!

It's amazing how it encapsulates both civility and uncivility in just one bow! Civility has reached such a level—it's so insightful and precise! This is just too civilized!

Wang Yao couldn't help but sigh with emotion. This was exactly what the old sage meant by "self-discipline and restoration of propriety"! He seemed to have seen the dawn of the world returning to benevolence. If anyone dared to say that the people of Huadu were uncivilized, he was prepared to fight them to the death. They were already this civilized, what more did they want?

"I'm still a little nervous. I'm not very good at math." Old Ma accepted Old Wei's bow, but he wasn't entirely at ease, clearly unsure if the numbers were correct.

"I tripped and fell today, so I'm definitely going to lose points for being a bad citizen. Please bear with me," Old Wei replied softly, then went to ask others how many bows they had given, and returned the bows in detail.

When it was Wang Yao's turn, Old Wei was taken aback. There were so few idlers on Wenming Road these days. Had this guy gotten himself into a crazy mess? Could this be the legendary reckless young man who knew there were tigers in the mountains but still went into them?

Wang Yao reported the number of times he bowed. He hadn't kept track of the earlier ones, and it would be unclear if he did later, so he simply reported more than ten more. He definitely wanted Lao Wei to have more than him, otherwise it would be too uncivilized for Lao Wei to lose points on this.
