"I didn't browse the Underworld Supermarket much, and I didn't pay much attention to artifacts or magical items," Wang Yao said embarrassedly.
"Uncle Ma, you haven't eaten yet, have you? Leave this Wang Xian to me, you should go and rest, you still have work to do this afternoon," Mr. Zuo said, turning to Old Man Ma.
"Alright, alright. You're neither a demon nor do you need to eat, so you can manage here. Don't worry." Old Man Ma was probably really hungry, because he kept saying "okay," and after comforting Wang Yao a couple more times, he turned and left Mr. Zuo's thatched hut.
"Wang Xian, please come here for a moment." Seeing that Old Man Ma had gone far away, Mr. Zuo gestured for Wang Yao to follow him out of the thatched hut. He led Wang Yao forward, and soon they left the village and came to the green fields surrounding the village. Wang Yao could see many stones piled up around the fields.
Mr. Zuo continued forward across the fields, and a gravelly area with sparse trees appeared before Wang Yao. At the end of the gravelly area was a sheer cliff, with distant mountain ranges layered upon each other. Although they were visible, they were an insurmountable chasm, impossible to cross easily.
“Our village is surrounded by sheer cliffs. The evil demons can't get up here, and we can't get out.” Mr. Zuo stood on the edge of the cliff and turned to look at Wang Yao. “I don't know if you accidentally triggered a mechanism and entered our village, or if you intentionally came to gather information, but you saw it too…”
Mr. Zuo pointed to the lush green fields not far away.
“We have nothing here. The little bit of barren land is barely enough to feed the whole village. If you want anything from us, you’re destined to be disappointed.”
"Since this place is surrounded by cliffs, how did you get in?" Wang Yao looked around for a while and asked with a frown.
“This is our secret. If you don’t know it, I won’t tell you. But if you do know it, then I can only beg you to keep this secret for us.” Mr. Zuo looked intently at Wang Yao.
"As you can see, we pose no threat to anyone, including the demons. We are just a group of refugees struggling to survive, and our only wish is to live peacefully here."
“We know that such a small obstacle cannot stop the evil demon, but how could the evil demon possibly care about our mere little place? The same principle applies to you immortals.”
"Mr. Zuo, you misunderstand. I was just curious and had no intention of finding out your secrets. Besides, I really did trigger the mechanism to get in. I knew nothing about this place beforehand," Wang Yao hurriedly explained.
"I just don't understand. With such a small area on the mountaintop, farming is difficult, and you have no food or clothing. Since you are refugees, why don't you move to other places? The realm of gods is vast. I don't believe that you can't find another suitable place to live besides here?"
Upon hearing this, Mr. Zuo smiled and waved for Wang Yao to follow him along the edge of the cliff.
“There are naturally many places in the God Realm that are better than here. When the Demon Clan attacked, we never thought of coming here. Being able to settle down here was actually out of necessity.” Mr. Zuo stopped and stretched out his hand into the distance, pointing to a place.
“That was our former home, Darkmoon City. Now it has probably become the domain of the demons. Even if the gods can temporarily repel the demons there, I guess that apart from the gods' army, there will never be any ordinary gods like us left in the city.”
“Back then, that place was an extremely prosperous location in my divine realm,” Mr. Zuo sighed.
"As the demon race grew stronger, Darkmoon City became a battlefield where the gods and demons frequently clashed a hundred years ago. Every time the demon race occupied Darkmoon City, all the people in the city had to flee. They would only return when the gods' army reoccupied Darkmoon City."
"The number of people who come back each time is much smaller than those who move out. After all, it is too difficult to come back. Everything has to start from scratch. The places that the demons occupied are no longer suitable for the gods to live in. Not only do the houses and furniture have to be replaced, but the most difficult thing is that the fields and trees need to be replanted."
"Just when we finally managed to clear out the demons and restore our farmland and homes, and everyone was able to make a living, the demons came again, and everyone had to flee again. Over time, Darkmoon City fell into ruin," Mr. Zuo murmured, gazing into the distance.
“We are all residents of Darkmoon City, who have lived here for generations. It’s hard to leave our homeland. We are the last group of natives in Darkmoon City who still travel back and forth. When we were evacuated from Darkmoon City for the last time, the demons came too fast, so we, the old, weak, women and children, could only hide here temporarily.”
"When everyone came up here, they found that this place was a rare paradise near Darkmoon City. There were no lesser demons coming up to breed, and they were able to cultivate some land. It was a place where they could live for a long time, so they settled down here."
"Although the environment here is simple, it's close to home after all. In years when the demons aren't causing too much trouble, we can even go back and offer incense at our ancestors' graves."
Although Wang Yao had heard Old Man Ma explain their origins before, it was only after Mr. Zuo's explanation that he truly understood why a village of gods had suddenly appeared on the top of the cliff.
“Our harvest here is extremely low. We barely manage to survive by digging for food in the cracks between the rocks. What we get is far from enough to feed so many people. After we moved up here, we have been carving stone steps on the back cliff. Two years ago, we finally opened them up, which gave us an extra source of fish to fill our stomachs.”
"We also managed to acquire some poultry and livestock, but all of these require someone to do the work. However, there are many elderly and young people here, and manpower is very scarce. Therefore, the rule of our Darkmoon Village is that those who do not work do not eat. Everyone has to do work, and the more you do, the more you get, and the less you do, the less you get."
