Chapter Twenty-Five: Absorbing Spirits

"Fellow Daoist Liu, I have official business to attend to down below. I've taken a break today to come to the Immortal Realm to absorb some spiritual energy. I dare not linger too long. I wonder if I can absorb it here?"

Wang Yao was a meticulous person. He heard Hua Gu say that if he occasionally stayed in the Immortal Realm for an hour or two, no one would hold it against him. According to this, wouldn't it mean that if he came up here often, or stayed for more than an hour or two, someone would hold it against him?

Moreover, Hua Gu said that after reaching the Nascent Soul stage, one must take a leave of absence to absorb spiritual energy. Therefore, he guessed that the office probably still had some control over the Immortal Realm, and he couldn't waste his time here.

That makes sense. The members of the office stationed in the human realm are naturally required to carry out their work in the human realm. Going to the immortal realm for a stroll would be considered slacking off or taking a break. They don't have the concept of holidays; it's a 24-hour, 365-day work system. Once a person leaves the human realm, it is considered absenteeism.

He's only just started working, so he should be careful. His goal is to become a deputy bureau chief, and if he leaves a bad impression, how will his superiors promote him?

"Understood, understood! Immortal Lü has many rules..." Little Liu nodded hurriedly, but then rubbed his hands together, looking somewhat troubled as he said to Wang Yao, "In principle, there shouldn't be any problem with you absorbing spiritual energy here, but the Heavenly Court has a rule that all those who absorb spiritual energy must go to the Study Hall, you see..."

"It's alright, it's alright. The study hall is fine. I'm of low rank and won't be staying here for long anyway," Wang Yao nodded hurriedly.

"It's such a blessing for us clerks that you understand so well!" Xiao Liu was overjoyed to hear that Wang Yao didn't blame him at all, and his eyes even looked like they were about to redden as he spoke.

Wang Yao was suspicious, but he didn't say anything. Even if this Xiao Liu had been a bachelor for 500 years, he wouldn't take the initiative to ask him a question. There was always a question mark hanging over Xiao Liu's head, and he was far superior to him.

They were just being polite to him. If he didn't understand and blindly tried to show off and help others, he probably wouldn't even know how he died.

Xiao Liu led Wang Yao out of the office through a door opposite the elevator. Wang Yao realized that he seemed to be in an office building. There were many offices like Xiao Liu's on both sides of the corridor, some with the door open and some with the door closed.

Looking through the open door, the layout inside was similar to Xiao Liu's office, except that some were three-person rooms and some were two-person rooms.

Wang Yao thought to himself, "This young Liu who's leading me has his own office. Could it be that young Liu is also a leader? I wonder if he's a section chief or a department head..."

Why would the leader be so polite to him? Could it be that he's in cahoots with that big-mouthed Xi? He's suffered enough as a result; whenever he sees anything that deviates from normal logic, Xi's ugly face will naturally pop out.

"Director Liu, what are you busy with?" A passing immortal greeted Xiao Liu warmly.

"No rush. A celestial being from the lower realm who absorbs spirits just arrived. I'll take him to the study hall," Xiao Liu explained with a smile.

Section...section chief? Which is higher, this or the section chief or the department head? Wang Yao was momentarily stunned. Before he transmigrated, he had focused on studying cultivation novels and was somewhat unbalanced in his studies. He had no idea about the ranks and systems of officials.

"Wow! What kind of immortal from the lower realm? Such a big shot, you even need Director Liu to personally escort him?" The immortal stared at Wang Yao with wide eyes, as if trying to peek at his identity information.

“Look at what you’re saying. Aren’t we immortals, regardless of our rank, all serving mortals? Besides, this person is an immortal. This is what I should do, what I should do!” Little Liu gave the talkative immortal a serious look and led Wang Yao straight forward.

"Um... well... Director Liu, you're quite busy, so let me see this fellow immortal off." The immortal took a couple of steps, then suddenly turned back and called out to Xiao Liu.

"No need, no need, it's just a few steps..." Xiao Liu frowned, showing a bit of impatience.

But the immortal didn't leave; he stayed by Wang Yao's side. After a short while, the three of them turned a corner, and a flight of stairs appeared before them. Xiao Liu led Wang Yao down the stairs, and the immortal shamelessly followed behind.

"Um... are you the newly appointed matchmaker?" As they descended the stairs, the man finally couldn't help but ask Wang Yao with a nervous expression.

“That’s right, may I ask who you are…” Wang Yao was now more experienced and knew that this person had secretly seen his identity information and was trying to curry favor.

“My surname is Li, and I’m just an unknown servant. No need for you to remember me. No wonder I saw you walking with such a majestic and confident stride, so dashing and unrestrained. You’re the God of Love! Truly extraordinary!”

The man kept muttering incessant flattery, making Wang Yao walk awkwardly, unsure how to match his twelve-character evaluation.

Damn it, you think I'm an idiot? Didn't you know you'd peeked at my personal information?! Do you think I'd believe your lies? You can't even flatter someone, what kind of trash are you?

Wang Yao glanced at the self-important young man surnamed Li, then followed Xiao Liu down the corridor without saying a word. In the middle of the corridor was a large room that looked like a conference room, with two double doors tightly closed.

A couplet was pasted on the door: "Every thread and strand reflects the Heavenly Emperor's great achievements; every drop and every bit shows the Immortal's care." The horizontal inscription read "Study Hall." Having been brought here, Xiao Liu stopped and turned to look at Wang Yao.

"I'm sorry, I can only take you this far. The Heavenly Emperor cares about the immortals in the lower realm, so he specially instructed that the original study hall on the first floor be moved here, just so you can save some of your time. Once inside, you should not only absorb spiritual energy, but also study hard," Xiao Liu said.
