Chapter 32 A Twisted Fate

The car stopped at another red light. Zhang Youye turned his head and glanced at Shu Yi's expression.

Her face was calm, her head resting against the back of the chair, and a few glints of light flickered in her dark pupils.

With her lips slightly pursed, her curly hair shimmered with points of light under the golden beam of light.

A soft sigh escaped his lips as he handed her the tissue box from the back of the car and asked gently.

"Would you like to hear the rest of the story?"

"Listen, tell me, I want to know about my grandmother." Shu Yi nodded gently in response.

When the green light came on, Zhang Youye turned the car left.

After catching a glimpse of a familiar landmark flashing past the car window, he continued to explain.

"You know that you can't hide the truth forever."

"After meeting your grandmother and learning that she was pregnant, your grandfather would often go out to visit her. Your great-grandfather found this strange and sent someone to secretly follow her. It's easy to imagine that he would find out something, but your grandfather still couldn't convince him."

"Grandma Shen is a very strong-willed person. During this time, she found out she was pregnant. After finding out, in order not to get upset and affect the baby in her womb, she didn't talk to your grandfather for a long time."

"According to this timeline, shouldn't my dad be older than my uncle?" Shu Yi asked, frowning.

"That's how it should be according to common sense. However, my grandfather said that the two grandmothers' due dates were more than a month apart, but Grandma Shen accidentally slipped and fell, which caused her to have a miscarriage, so your uncle was born first."

"So that's how it is," Shu Yi murmured. "And then?"

“After your eldest uncle was born, he was taken care of. As the eldest son in the family, he was naturally loved by your great-grandfather. Meanwhile, your grandmother was recuperating because she had lost her vitality. During this time, your grandmother also gave birth to your father. However, because of your great-grandfather's power, your grandfather was unable to take care of him. In the end, she chose to hang herself due to postpartum depression.”

"This is how my grandmother died."

The sad old ideas that arose in turbulent times have actually affected the lives of so many people.

Worried that tears would slip from the corners of her eyes, Shu Yi slowly tilted her head back, her jawline taut.

"And then what happened?" she asked again.

"Because of your grandmother's instructions before she passed away, after burying her, your grandfather, risking being beaten to death by your great-grandfather, took it upon himself to bring your father back."

“At that time, Grandma Shen still ignored your grandfather and even refused to appear in the same place as him. Perhaps because of the arrival of two new lives, your great-grandfather was no longer angry. He probably felt that the child was innocent and he could only accept this grandson.”

"As your uncle and father grew up, their intelligence and quick wit became apparent. I heard that your father was very smart and could learn things very quickly."

"Later, because of your great-grandfather's constant persuasion, Grandma Shen gradually let go of her resentment. Although she never gave your father a good look, she would occasionally communicate with your grandfather."

"Later, when they reached marriageable age, your uncle got married first, marrying your aunt. When it was your father's turn, he refused the arranged marriage and followed in your grandfather's footsteps. People in the know in the industry would say that it was like a remake of a TV series."

After a pause, Zhang Youye shared his insights.

"Actually, I think your dad was more courageous and capable than your grandfather. And my personal opinion is that I think your dad did the right thing. At least this way, he wouldn't hurt either of the two women. So, he and your mom were very happy while they were away. He took very good care of your mom, and then you came along."

Shu Yi already knew the rest of the story.

His father left home for his mother. He was neither Grandma Shen's biological son nor did he dare to challenge the family's authority. No wonder Grandma Shen refused to let Grandpa find him and bring him home.

Later, perhaps to save face for the Shen family, the grandfather could only do so after the death of the grandmother.

He ordered his men to search for the family.

But Shuyi never imagined that her father's life, which he had never told her about, would include such a past.

From Zhang Youye's words, Shu Yi learned the truth that even right and wrong could not be distinguished. She only felt sorry for the two grandmothers she had never met.

They suffered greatly from feudal ideology and were unable to fight against the feudal class until their deaths.

Under such circumstances, the two of them could only silently dedicate their entire lives in a way that was difficult to describe.

Now things have come to this.

It is pointless to pursue the blame now.

The lifelong bond between Grandpa and his two grandmothers may have been a matter of fate, or it may have been a tragic one.

Without her grandfather's entanglements with them, there would be no father, and without her father, there would be no her.

Unable to discern who was right and who was wrong, Shu Yi could only let out a heavy sigh. She closed her eyes, trying to calm the restlessness and frustration deep within her heart.

The moment she closed her eyes, Zhang Youye inexplicably stopped his hand, which had been instinctively hovering in mid-air.

Hesitated for a moment.

He withdrew his hand, which he had intended to use to comfort her.

Then, there was no more sound inside the carriage.
